I have noticed a number of similarities between the Coen Brothers Big Lebowski and Hitchcock's North By Northwest, which is no surprise since the Coen Brothers have always expressed their admiration for Hitchcock. Similarity one: The case of mistaken idenity, in NbNW, Thornhill is thought to be Agent George Kaplan, in Lebowski, the Dude Jeff Lebowski is thought to be the rich Jeff Lebowski. Similarity two: in NbNW, Thornhill is force-fed (force-drunked?) alcohol and then is put behind the wheel of a car, only to get arrested. In Lebowski, the Dude is drugged and runs down the street, only to be arrested. Similarity three, in NbNW, Thornhill scribbles on a notepad to see what had been written on the piece of paper that had just been torn off. In Lebowski, the Dude wants to find out what Jackie Treehorn wrote on the piece of paper he just tore off the notepad, and uses the same scribbling technique, with much stranger results. There's probably other parallels, perhaps to other Hitchcock movies, or to other filmmakers as well.

i never heard that one. that's cool. all of their films are filled with tons of references.
i know that BIG LEBOWSKI is best known for referencing THE BIG SLEEP, the Howard Hawks film noir from 1946. the entire plot of BIG LEBOWSKI is sort of a spoof of a the typical meandering Rayomond Chandler story, but specifically THE BIG SLEEP.. with very similar minor characters etc.. |

Whenever I read stuff like this, I'm reminded why I LOVE the Coen Brothers...it's the layers and layers and the fact that you can watch their movies over and over and get something new each time or hear information like this and then want to go back and watch them all over again.
Is anyone else here a BIG FAN of Miller's Crossing? |

I haven't seen it and it sickens me that that is the case. Apparently its "a handsome movie about a hat", which makes me want to even more.

Big Lebowski-- great film. I took my wife to that bowling alley on our first date. I used to bowl there every week. The City of LA tore the place down last year to build a school. Fucking pricks. |

Well it's MUCH more than that. Seriously, talk about layers, this movie has hats and cons and gangsters and betrayal and awesome dialouge and toupes and mean homosexuals and some of the best acting in a movie and as for it being handsome...yes...by god it's a good looking movie. The cinematography is out of this world. See it now and then come talk to me about it.
I am a Coen Bros fanatic and Miller's crossing is my first pick. |

Well, Hudsucker is a beast of a different color. It's definitely the weakest and unfortunately most forgetable.
I like it in only the way an admirer of what they were going for would. NOT the movie to turn non Coen-Heads on to their movies.
Guh-huh, Coen-heads. |

Yeah that's a good movie. I even had quotes of it in bible 2, which you can get here: www.cafepress.com/psdproducts
I make no money on it, and it's not really worth buying. But if you have the gumption, go for it. |

Miller's Crossing is fantastic, and every moment in it seems to point toward a different moment in the movie, and the moment which that moment points towards points to a different facet, it's so complex, but also enjoyable if simply watched for the cinematography or great dialogue. I watched it for the third time recently and think I finally understand the entire story, but then again, it's the Coens, so there could be so much more.

Well, I'll have to rent the BIg Lebowski. I've never seen it, but now that we're comparing it to one of my most favorite movies ever, (NXNW) I'll have to see this and dare to compare!
I never tire of NXNW. I taped it, then finally bought a video of it, and it was the first DVD I ordered when we got our DVD player. It is one of the movie-est movies ever made. Long, but wonderful, start to finish. I wrote papers on it for film class. I've seen it dozens of times, and its worth seeing it in the theater, for the Mt Rushmore scene alone. I still get breathless during hte crop duster scene, even though I know exactly how Cary Grant gets out of it. I still tense up when Thornhill throws down his matchbook with his warning message in it, and MArtin Landau picks it up but doesn't read it. I love love love this movie.

rent it, but be warned...it's a totally different tone. It's like NXNW absurdist-style

Just about every line in Miller's Crossing relates to the progression of events, and with the Coens, they sometimes have a line that stands out or that I have to think about for a moment, and therefore, with Miller's Crossing being as thick as it is, I missed a LOT the first time. I also wasn't really completely in movie mode the first time I watched it, so the second time, I spent much of the film connecting things, and this third time, I was able to enjoy both the story and the overall greatness of the film.
