Seriously my favorite band of all time. Nobody recording today can touch their volume of work and so much of it is so fucking good! Just wondering how many of you feel the same. |

Neil Young is pretty volumptuous..heh...
I like GBV tho. I find them a little hit-or-miss, but more hits than not. |

"Volumptuous," I like that one.
Yeah, I haven't listened to anything even close to all the Guided By Voices stuff, but some of it's great. Not sure I'll ever get into them like some people do, but definitely a good band.
Nothing is ever something. |

love? love? I simply adore them!
Old stuff, new stuff, everything is great but I have to say their newest album isn't that good, Earthquake Glue Yuck! But there's so much of them, that it's not that important that they make a less good record sometimes

like Dave said, they're very hit-or-miss. I think they're banking on sheer volume of work to ensure their legacy as opposed to just quality.

I have heard pretty much every GBV song, and they all kick ass in one way or another, though the last couple years have run the risk of "sameyness". (Loved UTAC though).
From 1993-1996 they were probably the best band in the world..that era reminds me of The Fall 1980-1983 run (where they were also probably teh best band in the world)...just in their own universe, lyrically, sound-wise, album cover wise..and of course through the massive amount of material released. |

maybe some of you die-hard GBV fans can help me out. I had a former bandmate who loved them, and played them quite a bit while we were hanging out, and there was one song that particularly stuck out as being good. I think it was called "big boring wedding." What album is that from?

Big Boring Wedding is a great song off of what I truely consider my #1, take-it-as-my-only-record-to-a-desert-island, absolute favorite album of all time: Under the Bushes Under the Stars. And I am not exaggerrating. |

UTBUTS is the album that got me into GbV. Great, great record. I don't really find their stuff to be "hit and miss". I own most of Mr. Pollards releases, and with a few exceptions, I can listen to them all the way through and enjoy every minute of it. |

Hey, stitches, your sig is a qoute from a Redd Kross song, no? Or a song that Redd Kross covered? Phase Shifter is a great album. I love "Mrs. Lady Evans". |

The Redd Kross version of that song is pretty tasty. I encourage you all to seek it out. Or suffer. |

huh, Do the Collapse, Isolation Drills, UTAC, and Earthquake Glue all seem like pretty strikingly different albums to me...
The Fall analogy is really good though, I've never thought of that. |

UTAC is one of the strongest records of them I guess. ''Real GBV fans'' seem to hate their TVT records period, they think Do the Collapse sucks and the artwork does too but I think it's a nice little piece of music and the artwork rules not sure about Isolation Drills, haven't heard it yet, Eartquake Glue is good, but a let down to me, but let's not forget the excellent music Herr Pollard makes for the Fading Captain Series! Kid Marine is great!

Mag Earwhig is still what I consider to be the best record. Like em alot, even though being a citizen of the town their from, you get a little sick of hearing about them.

Yes, the Fading Captian series has yielded some pretty damn good albums--the best being Speak Kindly of Your Volunteer Fire Department. Even Bob has often said that this should have been a GBV album. BUTT...Isolation Drills is really fucking good, especially if you didn't have a problem with Do the Collapse. Not that it sounds like that album, but it is more on the "polished" side of the spectrum. I highly recommend it!

You have to admit an alarming similarity between most GBV tunes, and Spinal Tap's "Cups and Cakes"

Just found out they are playing here in Columbus, OH, at a tiny TINY venue - the same one FB&tCs played at last summer. Little Brother's on January 24th.
