Yet another movie-related thread. I saw Hedwig this week-end (liked it but not as much as I expected) and I was thinking if someone had any recommandations of good rock musicals (or just movies talking about music). So far I can think of:
- Phantom Of The Paradise: my fave movie ever - Rocky Horror Picture show: my 2nd fave movie ever - Little Shop Of Horrors: love it too, mainly cause I played the drums in an adaptation we made at the uni - Hedwig - The Blues Brothers: I need to see that one again, don't know if I like it or not
I can't think of any other one. Any other recommandation is welcome (except Pink Floyd's The Wall cause I hate Pink Floyd).

Quadrophenia is the best rock movie.

Stop Making Sense is just a filmed concert, isn't it? Anyway I've been meaning to see it for a long time. Good choice. Is Quadrophenia similar to Tommy? Cause it really sucks. I've never heard of Quadro, I'll check it out. Thanks.

The best is the YELLOW SUBMARINE, by guess who.
I like the Rocky Horror Picture Show pretty much....
Oh and don't forget FANTASIA.

I bought True Stories a while ago. ($3.88 @ Walmart)
I've tried watching it about 5 times, but I keep falling asleep!
What's the draw?

I was about to mention Velvet Goldmine - if only for lovely Ewan McGregor. He's purty.
I also love Little Shop of Horrors - Steve Martin is fabulous. And Priscilla Queen of the Desert is fun and kind of a distant relative to Hedwig, I think.
Oh, and True Stories is so nice - John Goodman makes me cry when he sings People Like Us.

For movies that just talk about music, High Fidelity is a good one. Although not only about music, I guess that it falls into this category. I just saw Spinal Tap last weekend, excellent movie. "The patron saint of quality footwear." haha. I remember seeing some movie about the Ramones called Rock'n Roll High School awhile ago. Wasn't particularly impressed. That might just be because I'm not a big Ramones fan. Stop making sense is one of my favorite filmed shows. I saw that for the first time a couple of months ago along with the Cure's "Trilogy". Both were fun. If you get the chance rent them.

My favorite rock movie is "Gimme Shelter" by a mile. "The Last Waltz" and "Don't Look Back" are also great. |

Sir Rockabye did, Stitches.
If you wanna talk about filmed show footage - The Birthday Party "Pleasure Heads Must Burn" DVD is fucking amazing.
And if tv episodes with live musical performances written into the script are allowable into the court, "The Young Ones: Every Stoopid Episode" makes me happy as a little schoolgirl! Madness!

well it wasn't really a movie really... got this from allmusic.com: Bad News, the parody of a bad heavy metal band, began as a 1983 episode from the Comic Strip, an English comedy troupe whose members numbered three of the four Young Ones (Rik Mayall, Adrian Edmonson, and Nigel Planer) and writer Peter Richardson (other members included Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders). As a particularly British answer to Spinal Tap, Bad News could barely find the switch on their amp. Edmonson played Vim Fuego, the egocentric guitarist of the group, Planer played Den Dennis, the metal purist and rhythm guitarist, Mayall played Colin Grigson, the talentless bassman, tolerated because he owns the P.A., and Richardson as Spyder Webb, the barely there drummer. The 1983 special came at a creative high point for the Comic Strip team — it was one of many well-done shows in that season, but time, numerous repeats, and the rise of the VCR raised Bad News to cult status, mainly among college students. After a few years passed, the four decided to reunite for an album (Bad News) and sequel to the original special. To really get the most out of their roles, they played in front of 70,000 at Castle Donnington's Monsters of Rock festival and were promptly booed off the stage. The success of the album resulted in a cassette-only follow-up Bootleg and a single "Cashing in on Christmas" a poke at the traditional end-of-year single. The four comedian actors never returned to their roles afterwards, but a hashed-together compilation "The Cash in Compilation" followed a few years later with one or two rare tracks. The members have since gone on to various other TV and movie projects and (fortunately) never picked up any instruments again.
the cd is pure brilliance - some of the funniest shit i have ever heard. they do a cover of bohemian rhapsody that brings tears to your eyes for all the wrong reasons.
