Today's random song of the day is Manitoba.

What do you think of it?

lyrics
Up in Manitoba
The sky was very blue
The people were a few
And nights were getting colder

And when I heard the sound
I saw the sky turn red
Well I got up from my bed
And I wandered far from town

Yes I have seen the face of God
And I was not afraid
I have seen the face of God
And I have dearly paid

Darkness came I couldn't see
I had no light to follow
I slept inside the hollow
Of a dead and fallen tree

I tell you how three days I tried
To wake me up, Ah but no
My flesh had turned to snow
And I thought that I had died

I have seen the face of God
And I was not afraid
I have seen the face of God
And I have dearly paid

Yes I have seen the face of God

And though I had it rough
They got me home in time
They gave me homemade wine
But it was not enough

The cold had made me dumb
And I was sent away
These walls are here today
For fifty years and some

Yes I have seen the face of God
And I was not afraid
I have seen the face of God
And I have dearly paid

I'd really like to know the full story that this is apparently referencing, but I love this song in its entirety. A great closer, especially the impromptu ending which I think I remember hearing that VDP came up with on the spot.

The instrumentation is beautiful on this and I hope Frank continues to pull off some big numbers like this. Feels very epic without being a 7:50 overdose.

Isn't it..."The cold had made me NUMB"

Surely it is not dumb...is it?

Beautiful song and I adore the horns.

Not one of my favourites I'm afraid. It feels a bit 'ploddy'....if there is such a word.

Well if there is such a word, I've never heard of it.

7:50 overdose... You're not talking about Blast Off, are you?

It's alright. I don't love it - mostly b/c of the out of key singing by the broad at the end. I like the idea of a chorus singing - but someone should have had them all sing TOGETHER.

I am nit picky, but oh well. There are definetly things in the song I really like a lot - especially the tree bit and 'face of God' chorus.

Denis, I was thinking of typical 'epic' songs like Stairway to Heaven (don't get me wrong, I love it, but... ) and Bohemian Rhapody. Blast Off doesn't really strike me as epic.

Goddess, it is indeed dumb, but probably not in the sense that you're thinking.

"deaf and dumb" was old terminology for someone who could neither hear nor speak, and I assume the meaning here is that he has completely lost his voice from being out in the cold too long and probably damaging his vocal chords severely (I don't know if this is a permanent thing or not) from extensive cold/dry.

Oh, and Adnan, Frank has said as much as a friend in Manitoba (Winnipeg?) told him a really sad story about something that happened a few years back and that was the basis for the song. What that story is, on the other hand... no idea, though obviously I can make my guesses from the song.

great, great song. as far as i am concerned, this song saves the album. SMYT ends on a high note....so it is a great closer. i remember hearing it live before SMYT was released hoping that it would be on the next album.

this is a rather obvious retelling of "No Exit" by Jean-Paul Sartre, the French philosopher

Great song. I also hope he continues the use of "orchestral" music.

Aww...take it easy on him...he's tried to kill himself in a stupid way, he really has! He's just too stupid to kill himself. He's ashamed of his inability to kill himself. Poor Dean...

I love the song. What ever happened to the soundtrack/movie it was/is supposed to be in. Do I remember correctly that it's a different version of the song?

Me too, Steve. I like that they're up a fifth from Frank too instead of just an octave.

Also, there are definitely not enough trumpets in rock. Or too many, I'm not sure.
This is one of my all-time fave FB tracks, super stuff.
