Yeah, I don't want to be part of the elitist portion of fans who write off everything after Under the Bushes Under the Stars (also my pick for their best album, simply stunning). I agree that DTC, ID, UTAC and EG are all different sounding albums, but sometimes the songs within the album tend to blend together a bit. Not a huge gripe, considering Pollard has released close to 1000 songs.
P.S. I agree, all his solo albums are excellent and worth owning. Speak Kindly is the best, and for those who really enjoy Earthquake Glue, to me it sounds a lot like his 2001 solo album Choreographed Man of War. |

1000 songs? I guess you'll have to at least double that

I wasn't making a reference to all their stuff sounding alike, I was making a reference to all their stuff sounding like cups and cakes (oh what good treats mommy makes), but yeah, like em or not (and I do), you must admit, the guy's been writing the same five songs for twenty some years.

Well, I like 'em. And I'm sorry, but the fact that I could burn a CD of 30 songs sounding like 30 different bands proves the fact that "the guy has" NOT "been writing the same 5 songs for twenty some years". And if you want me to prove it I WILL... but you will have to put some kind of counter-offer up before I invest my time. Agree or not, you have to admit Pollard has a LOT more range than your assessment of "five songs." And if you reply "...ok then 6" then you will only prove how lame/wrong you are! |

Respectfully: You mean to seriously claim that there are only 5 different-sounding GBV songs? I mean, I will respect your opinion, but you must certainly admit that this was a generalization on your part, to say the least. |

Billgoodman, while Robert Pollard has no doubt written over 2000 songs, he hasn't yet released 1000. Getting very close though. |

Here's a couple different "types" of GBV songs I can think of:
The simple acoustic song, just Bob and an acoustic guitar: ex. Yours to Keep, Now to War, Bright Paper Werewolves
The infectious 2 minute Beatles type song: As We Go Up, We Go Down; Echos Myron, Watch Me Jumpstart
The commercial, well produced pop song: Glad Girls, Teenager FBI, Chasing Heather Crazy
The lengthy experimental multi-part prog type song: Portable Men's Society, Christian Animation Torch Carriers, Car Language
The one-off low-fi dirge that lasts 30 seconds: Evil Speakers, Cigarette Tricks, Pimple Zoo
The busty, catchy rocker: Everywhere With Helicopter, Bulldog Skin, Cut Out Witch
The noisy post-punk song: Love 1, Shocker in Gloomtown, Lethargy
The tape manipulated krautrock experimental song: Bee Thousand (the song), Her Psychology Today, all the Circus Devils albums
There are loads more, anyone else have any?

there's also a GBV style I like to call 'the only GBV song I know by name': ex. "Big Boring Wedding"

Big Boring Wedding is actually a nice track, but it's not a GBV classic. You should try some more GBV stuff Stiches.
There's a GBV song called In Stiches, maybe it's about you!
(well of course it isn't, just said it to make you excited about GBV)

It's on Do the Collapse STITCHES, which is generally regarded to be a weak GbV album, though I still like it every much. It certainly has the stink of Rick Ocasek all over it. But I think are some really strong songs on it, though "In Stitches" would not be one of my all time faves. |

well then I think I'll stick to UTBUTS for now....I've got Universal Truths and Cycles because I read that it was going to be the album of the year, and it wasn't bad, but it was no Murray Street

PS. It's "My love FOR YOU is ticking clock". Improper grammar is the key to good Russain metal. |

i would have to say that alien lanes and bee thousands are absolutely, hands down gbv's magnificently best albums. isolation drills is quite good, but not quite in the same leauge. although, i like it all. i just am suprised that most people seem to be mentiong other albums as their best. to each their own. but alien lanes and bee thousand alone would put gbv in my short list of bands that matter.
and now i'm living in the cold but i'm looking for the sign |
