One day I heard Cult of ray I said this is bad. But when I saw him three time that tour I must say I look back and listen to that cd. I funny story I was going to see Frank in Sept that day I had off and I did something cool. I sat in my house all day and Listen Frank from the first Cd all the way thru to DW. It was long but, then I saw Frank. The point was that when I hit TCOR which had been a while it reminded me how cool yet out there. Its really just as good as any other cd. I think most people really love the first Catholics cd that it seems to be week. I want every to try again and listen to again and again.
If you don't like it more well then "You Ani't Me"! |

I think TCOR is a great Frank album, but comes near the end of the "favourite" list for me. However I love "The Marsist", "Jesus was right" and "You Aint Me"

I hated Cult of Ray at first. Then I brought it with me one time when I visited my family in rural Western PA and listened to it over and over again (because of nothing else to do) and I realized I loved it. I usually have to listen to FB albums several times before really loving and appreciating them and COR just took many more listens than usual. Right now I think my least favorite album is Pistolero, although this will change the next time I listen to it.

I can't say that I "hated" that album when I first heard it. (Hate is such a strong word) But it was one that definately grew on me. Kind of like Surfer Rosa did!! |

To me TCOR sounds like Frank wasn't too sure what he wanted to do. He did want to record straight foward rock, but the way he recorded it, doesn't work really. Left guitar/Right guitar is not a bad idea (pixies did it too sometimes) but on TCOR it is anoying (in my opinion) while on Frank Black and The Catholics and Pistolero it's pretty damn fine. Lyle Workman lead parts on TCOR aren't ''thought through'' enough, it's like he tried them one time and it satisfied everybody immediatly. And one more thing, the lead part never stops on TCOR, on Catholics records the lead parts are sometimes played with the 'less is more' strategy.
The songs of TCOR are fine, but the production is a little dissapionting (again, in my opinion). I miss Dave's backing vocals too.
It was a great idea to go live to two track

Funny, my friend thought Cult of Ray took forever to get into also. For me it was the easist Frank to get into with the exception of Bossanova. I loved it so much at first that repeating listens actually brought it down a few notches (only a few though). Of course I was pretty young and didn't really understand Teenager or even fully some of the Pixies stuff at that point.
On the other hand, the first FB and the C's album took me forever to get into. I honestly HATED it when I first heard it, it sounded like lame generic rock music to me, no punch at all! I expected this super-raw album...I mean, the record company wouldn't release it? Surfer Rosa got released no problem and that was a big hit, what must this thing be like?? Then I get it and it's mid-tempo pop-rock. Nevertheless, I've obviously changed my mind since. |

i like it.
it was the first frank cd i bought. i thought that most of the songs were good, with the exception of a few (punk rock city, jesus was right). however, when comparing this cd to pistolero or dog in the sand it falls way short.

I dig it. The guitars are really nice. Then again, the guitars are really nice on all of his records.--Jayhawk |

Cult of Ray is definitely one of my least favorites. I think most of the songs are good (though I'm not a fan of instrumentals that sound like regular songs without vocals) but I think the production is bad. It has an quick and generic, insincere sheen to it. I also think the performances are a little lackluster except for Frank's vocals which are some of his best. The whole thing feels bogged down by the studio environment and I find it very fitting that it's his last multi track album. These songs really come out live. However, I think any album coming after Teenager was bound to be disappointing. |

I want to thank everyone for responing. This CD really changed everything in my life. It really has all the elements of what you know now as Frank Black And The Catholics. Like every CD Frank does it shows depth and diversity in styles no one really talks about the Last Stand of Shazeb Andleeb. It's got a great feeling. |

I have to admit the Cult of Ray wouldn't be in my top 3 Frank Black cd's but songs such as The Cult Of Ray and The Last Stand Of Shazeb Andleeb are absolute gems. |

dude, lyle rocks on that album. You aint Me lead? Jesus was Right? The solos are so great. And the adventure and the resolution has some bad (as in good) guitar work.
oh and the cult of ray (song)! the chords are all over the place and the lead is really good considering how many chord changes are in the song.
