I've heard from reading mini bios and discographies on the Pixies that most pixies fans don't like trompe le monde. I don't find it inferior to any other albums at all and was wondering if anyone really had these sentiments.
Download the song mother banger by chris morris. It's a pixies parody and it's genius. |

"Most pixies fans don't like trompe le monde" is an exaggeration, IMO. I never got that idea from this board.
I like the album, but I believe it would have been the beginning of a downward curve had Frank not gone solo.

Tremendous album. I know what you mean though, wasteof - I saw a Channel 4 (England) documentary about the Pixies a while ago in which most of the featured pundits declared that the band were a shadow of their former selves even by the time Bossanova came out. Which, IMHO is complete bollocks. |

yeah, i think it was the critics who didn't rate it as highly, and maybe some fans were a little disappointed at first listen when comparing it to doolittle and all? i don't know, too young! it's actually the first pixies album i really got into, so it remains the special one for me, motorway to roswell is fantastic.

When I heard TLM for the first time, I didn't like it at all. In fact I tought I would/could never like it - too noisy, too rough, too different from Doolittle and Bossanova. But I forced myself to listen to it again and again, and I progressively learned to enjoy its energy, its power, its spontaneity. I wouldn't say it became my favorite Pixies album, but I can now say that I really enjoy it, especially its second half. |

Trompe was my first pixies album and I think it's the best way to start when you're new to them. It's a great record!

TLM was my first introduction to the Pixies back in 1991 and it took me the next year to get through their previous albums. TLM was different than anything I was listening to at the time and I loved the things Charles could do with his voice - he was all over the place. Granted, their earlier work is much more diverse than TLM, however, it was enough to convince me that this band was in a class of it's own. The music and lyrics on TLM were intelligent, punchy, and full of twists and turns. It seems as though each Pixies album has it's own personality - pretty amazing considering every year they would modify their sound - truly a group of innovators. |

I probly wouldnt have jumped on the Pixies like I did if I'd heard TLM first, but it IS a fantastic album. Even after these years, I'm still appreciating Bossanova and TLM more and more with every listen. |

Whenever somebody's asking me about the Pixies, I give 'em Trompe and it usually seems that people like it. Comments often have something to do with the range of music it contains: people will say, "Wow, they do everything, eh?" For the most part, even people that aren't greatly into it don't say anything negative.

Trompe was conveniently the last Pixies album I ever heard, and I didn't like it. I thought to myself "Man, you can actually *hear* them breaking up"...that's just the way it felt. It had a very depressing quality to it that it was their last album and by that time, it felt as if they were just going through the motions. I now fully appreciate the album. I always felt that Motorway should be the final track on the album cause of its sheer beauty, as a final farewell, but Navajo Know wouldn't fit anywhere else and I wouldn't want to lose it.

Trompe le Monde was the first Pixies album I ever heard, except I'd heard the singles of "Everlong" and "Dig For Fire" before that. So, it will always have a special place for me. (*sniff*) I never could understand why it was considered to be the worst Pixies album, which I read somewhere too. Oh well.

TrompeLM was also my first introduction to the Pixies. I listened to it about 5 times a day for a week and within the next 6 months I owned all Pixies CDs. This was in 1996 I believe. It is still one of my favorites.
Then about a year later the same person who introduced me to Trompe played Teenager of the Year for me while we were smoking a bowl in his car on a canal bank. I bought that within a week, went back and got Frank's first CD, and have bought everything else he has released.
Being introduced to the Pixies is the only thing I got out of college, other than student loans I'll be paying on for the next 20 years. |

I'm pretty sure he means "Winterlong" (the Neil Young cover).
I never really got into TLM like the other Pixies albums. IMO, it was the most inconsistent Pixies album; Doolittle's mood completely changed from beginning to end, and the songs were varied, but many TLM tracks sound alike. Beside the filler it still had some good tracks: Alec Eiffel, Navajo Know, and U-Mass were fairly memorable. |

i think tlm is their best. it is the most "grown up" album, the songs are just incredible good. starting off with trompe le monde, alec eiffel is superior and the sad punk is the ultimative pixies song. then there is subbacultcha, u-mass, space, d=rxt and an incredible j&mc cover. regarding the lyrics, the whole album is soooo poetic. and the softer songs are just endlessly beautiful.
so, that was my praise. |

Not everyone is a walking Pixies discography. I think everyone deduced what he meant by "Everlong" except you. But now you've proven your superior knowledge of the song title and made him look like a nincompoop. Well done.

i got a promotional single with letter to memphis on it, right before the album came out. i used to crank that up really loud. trompe le monde is classic. distance = rate X time has the greatest singing harmonies between black frances and kim deal, since river euphrates. for some of the songs, you have to train yourself to love songs that are bareboned, that have lots of muscle. like on planet of sound and subbacultcha. those songs might not have as much emotional depth as others, or they might not appear to sound quite as pretty. that's where the animal instincts kick in. you just have to appreciate the brashness of those songs. it's like heavy metal. |

i first got doolittle and didn't like it, and then i said that i'd give'em another go and went out and bought trompe. thank goodness i did. i used to sit in my shitty school bus and crank up d=rXt and head on. its such a sparkly record, they way its produced. all those weird sounds and noises you can only hear after extensive listening. i'd hate if fb+the c's covered motorway to roswell cos the outro is so purdyful with the double backing vocals from both kim and frank on the 'down down down down' part.
signatures suck. |

Sometimes it's just absurd to "rank" things or talk about favorites, but I think Trompe Le Monde is probably my favorite Pixies album, but really, there are songs from every album that I can't do without. I was going to say that Bossanova is maybe my least favorite, but I don't know-- Velouria, Allison, The Happening, Hang Wire and Havolina are such beautiful songs to me.

TLM is an amazing album. It always feels to me like a concept album, although what the concept is I couldn't be sure. But it is one of those albums where each song flows into the next very deliberately. The programming of the songs is perfect, the production is incredible.
Back when it came out in '91, we had a rule that once you started TLM you had to listen to it in it's entirety. Just those opening notes still give me goosebumps.
All the Pixies albums are great but this one was them at their peak. It's perfect that they broke up after this album, finishing on top. IMHO

trompe was the last pixies album i heard - and i would say it remains my least fav. it would be the one i listen to the least, especially now since it's the only one i didn't bring over with me to the UK.....
i would say it is more consistent than bossanova, but for me doesn't have the amazingly outstanding songs that are all over the world and the happening...

Although I think TLM can be appreciated in its own right as a decent album, i think it is by far the weakest and is nowhere near as good as the other four. There only seem to be about 4 songs up to usual pixies standard (planet of sound, alec eiffel,u-mass,letter to memphis), the rest are good but just a bit patchy and not the high quality we came to expect from the pixies.
Sorry Trompe Le Monde lovers.
