the whole "freedom fries" thing made me embarrassed to be an American....we really are the assholes of the world sometimes (other times, it's the Brazilians)

Not fair, I don't think. I'm scouring EVERYTHING, trying to leave no turn unstoned in the course of my research. And a couple of fans who've seen my posting have indeed offered some very good stuff.
shouldn't you naturally be drawn to the material (Pixies/Frank Black) that you'd already know quite a bit about the subject? and/or already have done ample research? isn't that your job as a writer?
What leads you imagine that I haven't done a great deal of research, dear fellow?
visiting the discussion forum here seems like an excellent, additional source of information.. but shouldn't you already have your ducks in a row, to some degree?
Again, you have no reason to assume they're not.
you're just blindly saying "supply me with useful information.".. do you have any specific questions perhaps?
Tons, but I thought the wiser strategy was to invite anybody with anything to offer it, and then sift through for the nuggets of gold.
also, are you a fan? why did you chose to do these books?
Not a rabid fan, no. And if you believe that I need to be to relate the story in an interesting way, then we will have to agree to disagree
yes, i'm defensive..
[editing to sound less harsh]:
yeah, honestly, best of luck.. and the books will probably benefit from a slightly more objective viewpoint, as opposed to them being written by an obsessed freak fan. i, like you, hope they turn out great.
Thank you. I think the last thing anyone needs is an obsessed fan book, unless it's more about the obsession than the object of the obsession.
maybe you could set up a question answer forum here, and use this as a Frank Black think tank, which it is. between everyone here, you could probably find out just about anything you want.
Let's try it. I went to see FBATC in London last month. He didn't acknowledge his rapturous audience at all. Was that arrogance? Shyness?
Let's try another. Anyone reading this who saw the early Pixies gigs in Boston, or who's been to the Rat?

This is a typical remark for someone not so familiar with FB. Frank Black is really difficult to understand. He can be the nicest and the most arrogant person in one, without being contradictory. He seldom speaks to the crowd, but can sometimes make hilarious jokes on stage. Sometimes he is very nice with the journalist intervewing him, sometimes (and you can check it out on the interviews audio database) it can turn out to be 45 minutes of hell for the interviewer.
The thing is, this guy is never straight forward, never really serious, never really THERE.
He is the MAN.

Out of the course of a year, I'd say many folks (myself included) have a few days when you would not want to deal with them. Being a little moody only means you're human. If FB was having a bad day, it certainly did not carry over on to the stage at the shows I have attended, including a gig shortly after having his gear ripped off.

There are plenty of occasions on which mr Black has spoken about his responsibility as a performer, the most interesting might be his dancing bear rant which you'd find in the king holds court thread. He also said once, while in the pixies, that the audience had no responsibility once they paid for the tickets (meaning no-one has to applause) - likewise - his responsibility was to sing and play - finito. Anything beyond that was extras. I think i have that one on video somewhere. If that's shyness or arrogance or both or something else, i don't know - but if you've read some of his interviews lately you might get a clue.

In Birmingham last year he said hello at the start of the gig and said with a smile "that'll be pretty much all in the way of chat!" True to form, he said nothing else for the rest of the show. I did see him on the COR tour, and he introduced "...Shazeb Andleeb" with a short explanation as to the story that inspired it, which I've never heard him do with a new song since.

And he often turns his back to the crowd when not singing...
But you know, it's much better than saying " hello Paris, are you ready for some ROCK'N'ROLL ?"
Personally, I don't expect a singer to talk to the crowd, I go to a show to see him playing. Frank is not my friend. Perhaps in real life he is someone I wouldn't like.
Mozart was a very vulgar person in real life but composed such a refined music...

Exactly. I went to the Leeds festival last summer and all the US bands spent half their time telling us what a crazy bunch of fucked-up motherfuckers we were. Mind you, in most cases that was more enjoyable than the songs. |

Excellent, andyn!
Cheeseman: I have this book. Nothing really interesting in it, it's just a long bio. There are some cool photos though, and a nice poster. I have it in French, and it's full of typos.
