Today's random song of the day is The Hostest With the Mostest.

What do you think of it?

lyrics
As fluorescents do
They blink o''er the floor
Of her majestic halls
Yeah, they do

I hear surf on kazoo
I march with the militia of the mime
Malicious are the times
Malicious

In the doors we all flew
To see the great indoors
Of her majestic stalls
Yeah, we flew

Waves break on the shore of the zoo
And I see how
Laurasia sure has changed
Imaginary planes
Imagine

I hit the mall on every friday
When it was biggest in the world
The hostess with the mostest

see you next year

It's about the biggest mall in the world at one time . . . or is it?

It's about a mall, can't remember which one. I posted a link to some online chat interviews with Frank in the "Making Noise" section, I think it had "Earwig" in the title. Anyway, I think he talks a bit about this song there...hold on, it's archived. Here ya go (interesting stuff):
http://forum.frankblack.net/topic.asp?ARCHIVE=true&TOPIC_ID=3635&SearchTerms=earwig

Anyway, to summarize (hopefully someone else can fill in the holes left from my swiss-cheese brain), it was a (at the time) biggest-in-the-world mall where (I believe) he used to go hang out at the arcade. My guess is "surf on kazoo" is in reference to the piped-in music you hear in most big malls. The rest follows, like the marching militia, "zoo", flourescent lights, etc..

"Laurasia was the northern half of Pangea; an ancient continental mass in the Northern Hemisphere that included North America, Europe, and Asia. Its existence was proposed by Alexander Du Toit, a South African geologist, in "Our Wandering Continents" (1937)."

Observing with wonder and maybe ennui? the massive change in the topical "geology" and "geography" of the continent, now beset-upon by this new mammoth structure, and its ilk.

Anyway, that's only how I see it. The only part I am sure of is that it is about that mall. Anybody know for sure? I would love to know some other interpretations.

Apparently it is about a mall in California named the Del Amo Mall:

Haha - thanks jediroller. Do you have a combination of at least 2 of any of the following:

rubber chickens
live chickens
big butcher knife
bushy moustache
oversized chef's hat
"wavy-arms" syndrome
incomprehensible accent
tongue of one over-used leather shoe

If you have the prerequisites, you're in, buddy! With all the usual disclaimers about the risk of harm to human and fowl, and things might get thrown about on a regular basis.

Wow, nearly everyone I've talked to about this song totally shits on it.

It rocks.

From a Frank show 5/27/94:
"This song is about the Del Amo Mall Shopping Center down in Fluorence, California. The former largest mall in the world when I frequented there."

Cool, I've been to the Del Amo mall. It has a big glass arcade (that is....not a place to play video games but to look out of and vegetate).

But I always thought the line was, "I walk with the militia of the MIME". Yeah, yeah, I read the lyric sheet way back when. I guess that just morphed in my head. I have to say I'm a little disappointed to find out that my mental image of a marching army of mimes isn't even a theme of the song at all. What the hell does "militia of the mine" mean anyway? Is it a way of saying "the selfish" or something?

Maybe I should start a petition to get Frank to change to lyrics to fit my image of how the world should be. Any takers?

TOTY is almost mundane in how chock full of amazing songs it is. This is a perfect example. When I isolate it from the rest of the album and look at its pale naked form in the light of day....the song is amazing. But in the car stereo as the rest of the tracks roll by, it just doesn't get its rightful due. Even if its not about mimes, dammit.

Shit.

I thought it was 'MIME" too.

Was so convinced of it that I thought I read the word "mime" in the lyrics oracle posted.

Still like that visual, though. Mimes marching around playing kazoos.

I imagined "militia of the mine" as an army of shoppers going into a cavernous mall to extract their goodies, like a weapons cache for the materialistic horde to buffer them against the outside world. But with a ironic, humanist bent, 'cause, hey! we need stuff, ok? Might be a fitting song for the season, n'est pas? heheh

Hey!! It IS "militia of the mime". Read your lyric sheet.

At least the FBTab says "mime" and as soon as I get home to my CD case, I'll double check my sources.

Ahhh....the world is right again. What could be more disturbing than an army of mimes? Maybe an army of mimes armed with anthrax or nerve gas?

Takes photon power and eight minutes of an hour...to make it to our sun. And I know it sounds weird but it'll take you four years, to make the next one. Expanding borders....that's the sauce of chaos and that's an order!

Personally, I'd be MORE disturbed by an army of Regis. (What IS the plural of Regis...Regises? Regi? Regen? or is it just Regis?) Can't you just hear the cacophany of..."Is that your final answer?" "Is THAT your final answer?" "Is that YOUR final answer?" "Is that...your final....answer?" in an almost incomprehensible torrent of thunderous noise?

Gives me the heebie jeebies. Or is it jim-jams?

I thought it was "Militia of the mime", too. In fact, it sounded so great (I thought of the French "Mime Marceau" marching with a black shirt) that it influenced totally my conception of the song.

Funny how so many of us thought the same...

In the liner notes it is mime - votre conception est sauvée, Adnan.

Quite honestly, several years ago here in the US, I heard an interview with Marcel Marceau on National Public Radio...he didn't say much at all.

"Militia of the mime" : if I had a band, that would be a good name. One of the best word associations I have ever heard. Frank is always so good at that, just assembling two words, like "wave of mutilation". I guess it is the most basic way of making poetry, creating new sense.

By the way, I just came back to France after spending 6 months in Sweden, and I must say that Swedish cuisine is really inferior (apologies for all Swedes, I really liked your girls but not your food). It makes you wonder if Swedish chefs really exist.

It's widely speculated that Frank is a huge fan of Ethel Merman. Many musicians have had supsicious feelings now that Ethel's gone. And, as such, he covered her song from the hit Irving Berlin musical http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000002OJO/qid=1073431309/sr=1-3/ref=sr_1_3/002-2561905-0072061?v=glance&s=music Call Me Madam. He shortened it from The Hostest With The Mostes' On The Ball.

I just heard something weird on our local talk radio station, only just in the last hour!, about Ethel Merman and Ernest Borgnine and their very short marriage. He apparently used to subject her to Dutch Ovens.

http://entertainment.msn.com/news/article.aspx?news=114177

"5. Ernest Borgnine & Ethel Merman
Married: June 26, 1964
Split after 32 days

"The coupling of thrice-wed Broadway belter Ethel Merman and twice-wed Oscar-winner Ernest Borgnine is one of the kookiest in Hollywood history. The unlikely duo's knot began unraveling on their honeymoon, when, according to Borgnine, he garnered the lion's share of fan attention, which left Merman seething. "By the time we got home, it was hell on earth," he recalled in 2001. "And after 32 days I said to her, 'Madam, bye.'" But things weren't exactly coming up roses for the Merm: she was allegedly subjected to the silent and deadly "Dutch Oven," which involved Borgnine releasing toxic fumes in bed while trapping her under the sheets. Merman, who never again married, devoted a chapter of her autobiography to the Borgnine marriage: It consisted of one blank page."

Hey, that song is pretty clever. I love the kind of groove 80's hair-band opening. And the shopping-mall muzak winding down at the end.
