Nickelback
Theory of a Deadman (nickelback clone)
Good Charlotte (hate 'em, hate 'em)
Creed
Default (thanks ALOT Canada! sheesh)
John Mayer
Fuel
Evanescence -- saw an interview and the guitarist said something like: "Our biggest goal was to get on MTV. We knew we had made it big once we were on MTV."
Staind
Linkin Park
Simple Plan
I think this topic is mostly about bands you hate that everyone seems to love and you ask why why why?

Bands that are really popular, but I just don't get? Let's see... The Doors Slayer Pearl Jam Tool Dave Matthews Band Bon Jovi, esp.the last 10 years Eric Clapton solo Tori Amos Pink Floyd Jimmy Buffet Rush The 'Dead, man Again, I'm not saying these bands suck or aren't talented/influencial. I just don't understand the appeal. Except for Clapton-he blows!

Bnds that should be put to death forthwith are: Oasis Creed That band with Chad Kroger in it, can't think of their name right now, but they are very similar to Creed in the shitty stakes. Evanescence The Strokes |

My two cents without any insight:
Modest Mouse is not an emo band.
Nirvana, while good, is really friggin overrated.

I love(d) the Pixies cause they was ANTI-ROCK. I mean, look at most bands now days, bopper trying to pretend they were around in the 60's or 70 or whatever...all STYLE, no SUBSTANCE. Pixes: SUBTANCE WITHOUT STYLE. Nirvana: Style WITHOUT (much) substance. Copycats. Strokes et al: PLEASE! RESCUE ME! AHHHHRGH! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRGGGH!!!! |

Emo apparently stands for "emotional" music. It's a stupid genre that mostly high school teenagers (and some college kids) enjoy and play. I guess it's like slowed down punk music that tries to sound "emotional" and deep. I'm sure someone can describe it better than me.
Whiney vocals, lyrics about girls and breaking up...
EMO MUSIC = TOO EMOTIONAL FOR THE BANDS OWN GOOD
Stay away from emo music. It's awful.

Okay, I liked Nirvana, but I can see your point. If you mean that they were not the most talented musicians in the world, then I get your drift. However, the Pixies were not the most talented group in the world either, especially on Come on Pilgrim and Surfer Rosa. I think that both of these band's strong points lied in the emotion that their music projected, not in their skill in playing their instruments. |

that pretty much sums it up....dashboard confessional is a good example of crappy emo that's super-popular right now. It wasn't so bad in the early days when bands like Sunny Day Real Estate were doing it.....

Jebus! WTF?!
Song names: "Dieting on Ciggarretes (Spelling?)" "Something Vague" "The Last Emo Song I Will Ever Write About You"
From his FAQ:
"Your influences? Well, right now, I've been listening to ALOT of Bright Eye's really light stuff. But, I like a lot of other music. It's really... I can't describe to you what I've taken in, without taking forever to do it. I'm sorry.... :( ... Equipment used: I use whatever I have. Mostly my 1970 Martin acoustic."
Holy freakin sh*t, man. Must be tough! Now if his singing and songwriting warranted his expensive instrument. Goodness me. <shudder!>

when people refer to modest mouse as emo, the only conclusion I can draw is that either 1) they've never even heard modest mouse, or 2) they don't know what the hell emo really is....wankers

ugh I think I agree with all of that (Well, except for the Doors)...I always get slammed for thinking that about Clapton (though Cream was pretty awesome!)...and it's not that I hate him or anything...but his solo music makes me physically ache I'm also the same way with Pearl Jam...though I will admit I have only heard but so much of their music...but what I have heard made my stomach turn, it was just too whiney for my taste...but if other people like it that's ok...just keep it away from me! Also, Pink Floyd I can deal with but for some reason I just don't like them...not sure exactly why...

Riverdales. Thought I'd throw them in because it's not the most obvious choice - they seem to be a pretty obscure band (I might be wrong, though). Anyway, they had awful awful awful music. I actually think a lot of their songs are really catchy, but catchiness isn't enough. It doesn't take a lot of work to make a catchy song if all you do is recycle the same old 3-chord, simple riffs without any originality. Yes, I'm all for people who work hard at what they do. Originality and complexity takes a lot of work. Although some simple music that I really like exists, I am a huge fan of complex music. Bad complex music exists too, I suppose. But if something is original and complex, I'll probably love it. |

ah throw in the Darkness and Jet if they haven't already been put in... They are just trying to ride the wave of the 'nostalgic rock' trend...

It's not Nirvana's fault that they became so overrated/overexposed. And as far as too many teenybopper, you can't tell me that record was made to appeal exclusively to them. |

hahaha....KISS. My husband (when he was 3, mind you) had a dream that the members of KISS were pleasant, sweet-natured women that took care of him, fed him dinner and such. All while in full costume and makeup. He felt quite content. Don't let your babies watch KISS on the tv, and keep the LPs out of reach of their tiny sticky hands. .........Or not.
Still, all you mamas out there, you should never let your babies grow up to be cowboys.

I have to add Peaches to this list.
I just listened to a couple of her big songs on epitonic, and man, what crap.
Kim Gordon (I hate mentioning her in the same sentence) and even Lydia Lunch, did it better. Way better. What a no-talent sleeze-ball. No originality, obviously all about shock. I hate that she's made it anywhere at all, even more that she became a big name in the indie scene. I'm all about women being sexually liberated, but I would hate this coming from a guy just as much. She reminds me of that "I'm too sexy" song, only not funny. Wow, now we can even have an Indie-Britney, minus the talent..... -urp!!!!
