id love to see a q and a with him. genuine fans asking questions instead of some kid asking stoopid things. is it possible though? maybe...

Hey Dave. If there is a q and a....can we officially ban the word "pixies" from the discussion? |

Na! I don't agree. He's definitely comfortable playing Pixies' tunes, why shouldn't we be comfortable with the word?. I will always love the Pixies, as I do Frank Black. |

Frank is intelligent enough....we do not need to censor ourselves or ban words....just use discretion. There are answers to questions that are relevent to his present day work that I may just have to refer to that band he was in before. I would love a q and a. I will post some questions on the other board....thanks for the link.

Living on soul is one of his best songs in my opinion, the lyrics are awsome...

I have to agree on Humboldt County Massacre. One of his greatest songs. First version much better than SSMVGD version. |

Is Humboldt County Massacre about forest clear-cutting in California?

No I know I have some live version of it where he talks about how these two guys bought this land and killed all the indians that were there, or some such |

The Humboldt song contains possibly Frank's least cryptic lyrics ever. There are many places on the Web that tell the story. One "official"-type resource is the the site to the nearly extinct Wiyot tribe:
http://www.wiyot.com/history.htm
I wholeheartedly agree that the original b-side version is much better. It's concise and uptempo and he sings better.
But PanAm Highway is easily his best b-side. I don't see my person bursting any time soon.
What's kinda cool about the Humboldt song is that other than for authentification purposes, the song replaces the need to read up any further. And it is an example of how TMBG might more stylishly execute one of their silly "learning" songs (like "Mammal" or "James K. Polk") or Linnel's (right?) "state" songs.

Ok here I go I have seen alot of bsides live and the best is Humbolt frank solo about 4 or 5 years ago. If there was no Pixies could there be Frank Black? If you have a q and a you could not ask a man about his youth ponder that.
Sometime I think his bsides Oddballs the song or the CD are the best songs here's a fast list I like.
You never heard about me Village of the sun Better things Hate Me This is where I belong Ballad of Jonny Horton Pan American Highway Sleep Constant Sorrow Man Pray for the girls

I haven't heard "Humboldt Country Massacre," but, as a TMBG fan, I can't help but mention that the State Songs written by John Linnell (right name, wrong spelling) aren't intended to be educational. They're just songs built around the names of states, but not actually ABOUT the states.

i think the ultimate version of Humboldt County Massacre is him playing it live and solo at the Prinzebar thing in Germany (some in-store performance he did while promoting DITS).. i didn't truly appreciate the song until i heard that. he plays it slightly slower and puts some serious heart in it.. i think the single version detracts from the lyrics a bit. i couldn't make a lot of it out until i heard Prinzebar..
but yeah.. great tune.
Pan Am rules though.. |
