Anyone have a particular Frank track that has made the personal impression as his legacy in your brain forever? First of all, tonight Mohammed and a few concubines stopped by to remind me of what I mostly already knew, which is that Dog in the Sand is not only Frank's best record, but like it's about 33X as good as the next one in line. I don't expect many, if any, to agree with me. But I predict that its legacy will be like that of Sgt. Pepper or Pet Sounds or Transformer or whatever, in 30 years. I mean as far as how "music historians" look at things. SPLHCB isn't even one of my top 3 or 4 Beatles records.

And while DitS it chock full of serious rock and roll tastiness, "Robert Onion" is such the best song he's ever recorded, in my crumbled opinion. The way the song builds, just like the engine of that rocket, ready for its Mars mission launch, then counts down the final four seconds ("t-minus 'four hundred million' 'three cheers for robert' 'to the cinnabar' 'one ponders layers'") and then it soars triumphant through the sky amid the supercalifragilistic exhilerated reverent howls of "ROBERT" . . . "ROBERT" . . . "ROBERT" I don't know what to say beyond that.

Anyway, that's Frank's legacy for me. I doubt it will change, but I sure hope it can! Imagine what would take its place. Jeesh.

Black Leter Days has usurped the Gold Cup for albums in my sensations. Valentine and Garuda my most recent favorite.

if we're allowed to put count pixies songs I think "Gouge Away" will stand the test of time as the quintessential Charles Thompson song

How do you name a defining song for a man who changes his style every album. To me it's kinda contradictory....defining the undefineable....ahh oh well.....

Legacy song...Gouge Away is a good choice, I agree.

Zan, you know by my sig, that Cold Heart of Stone is one of my favs too. The Swimmer is one of his most beautifully heartbreaking melodies.

Too hard and too early (I hope)to tell.

Yes, I did notice that, Swimmer. It's just a great song that I think we can all relate to at some point in our lives. Such a perfect breakup/you ditched me song.

And yes, The Swimmer is one of my favs too. I love the part when it's just Frank singing and Dave P on acoustic. Beautiful.

You ani't me or Kicked in the taco. Black Letter Days will be the greatest record ever not just by him really listen to it, Jane the Queen of Love rules. I saw him in Sept and he played it acoustic solo and it really make me feel sad.

To me Franks legacy song is, you know, the one they play on the radio all the time to remind us how great Charles' music is. You know that song it's his one hit wonder. The one he played at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. You know, right after he introduced HIS heros Bowie and VU's Reed. You know that song. You hum it all day long. Sometimes you may catch yourself humming a different song of his making you feel guilty for liking another song. God, I love that song too.
