Today's random Song of the Day is 1826.
What do you think of it?
lyrics I''m going away I''m going far away I''m going further than the land that meets the sky
And I won''t rest Until I''m very far I''ll walk for many days and walk through many nights I leave today
I smell the death I smell it very near I''m going away before that death is coming here
I hear a sound I hear my enemies I hear them getting louder, louder everyday My enemies
I''ll run and run And I won''t have a home I don''t know when I''ll stop my running I don''t know
Won’t have a friend Won’t talk to anyone Oh will I ever stop my running? I don''t know
Oh I don''t know Oh will I ever know? Will I ever stop my running? I don''t know Oh I don''t know

Everyday there's a new "song of the day", and everyday I say "Ooh, I love this one!"...
I love this one. Reminds me of the Stones' Can't You Hear Me Knocking.

This is probably my least favourite track on Black Letter Days, maybe even of them all. I never skip an FB track, I honestly love ALL of his stuff, but this one is skipped almost every time, either right away or 5 mins in. I'm trying to think of a track I skip more than this one, as this being my least favourite FB song is a bit of a revelation. I'll get back to you...

I really like the words...very simple and poetic. I think the music is VERY weak. Not even filler material. He has a harsh one nearly every album, but BLD has a few. ...just one person's opinion...

I have to be in the mood for 1826. And Frank's whining at the beginning kind of makes my head hurt. I always feel like yelling "sing or don't!" So, I guess this is not my very favorite song either. |

So, nobody's gonna back me up? Come on, it's almost as great as Blast Off (which nobody seems to like either apart from me).

Hey ramona! You probably didn't notice, but the post you wrote was your 1826th post... That's funny.

Every time I start up windows media player’s Frank Black play list, it plays “1826” automatically. It’s the first song, alphabetically, so I’m pretty familiar with this one.
This song reminds me of Indian chants or early bluegrass/blues, with the hint of PJ Harvey guitars.
I do like the 5/8 guitars over the 5/4 drums, the whistling noises in the background, the gradual change of riffs at 1:28 & 2:34 (though the bass and guitar clash for a bit)
The guitarist who plays along with Frank’s voice in the beginning (most likely it’s Frank) sure picks weird. We’re taught a up/down motion on the strings when playing. You can hear him pick upwards with a little force, instead.
I’m sure glad there’s a break from the guitar riffs the second half of the song. Sometimes, I don’t even listen that far. The end, you do hear that rare moments of all 3 guitars playing their little parts. Usually, they all blend in into one mush.
...though he loved to rock and roll...

Yeah, I've noticed that I'm the only person who really likes this song besides you, vilainde. I mean, it's not one of my favorites, really, but the end's guitar duel is quite fucking fantastic.

I also have to be "in the right mood" for 1826. Unfortunately, I've never been in that mood.
I think I've listened to it all the way through once.

I love both 1826 and Blast Off. But I enjoy Frank's more experimental/jammy moments. And who doesn't love a 5/4 rhythm? It ranks near the top with Cali Bound, Jane, and 21 Reasons in my book. |

Hi there. This is only my 3rd or 4th post but I have to say this sounds like pure Led Zep to me. ie fine as a Led Zep rip-off but not so great for a Frank Black song. Was he trying to do a sort of Immigrant Song about the "discovery" of the Wild West? The lyrics are very paranoid and so is the repretitive riff...does anybody know what the hell this song is about? |

I have to be in the mood as well. I hate to say it but 5 mins in I often skip ahead. I rarely ever do that on any other FB CD's.
Blast Off really grew on me over time and I dig it Vilainde... |

Isn't it about the deportation of the Southeastern Indian tribes in the 1820s-30s?... Just a supposition on my part.

...er, vilainde, now that you mention it, I dont care for Blast Off either. I like the beginning where he is walking thru the words....then when everyone gets going (~1:00) the song becomes very boring...for a long time. It is cool at 3:24 but goes back into the same. I always skip that track. But that's okay, I skip Oddball on Oddballs too.... I think I have heard that one live too many times....but whaddo I know.

An extremely underrated FB song. I really love this song. Excellent introduction. Odd structure. Untradional. In 5/4 time (I think). Great hook. |

some of the guitar solo sound like Richard Thompson that's always a plus but the darn track is too long for me just like Blast Off or Stephen Malkmus' 1% of One, sure the songs are ok, but who really needs 5 minutes of soloing? I most definately don't

This was my favorite song off of BLD...the ending jam is fantastic, some of the best musicianship exibeted on a FB album. It rocks so hard in such a weird way. I love it.

One of the best on BLD. Jammy experimental things can be pretty damn boring when not buoyed by some sort of structure. 1826 has plenty of structure; it's just obscured by repetition and odd phrasing. I like that. |

Big fan of this song here.
I'm a big dorky classic rock lovin' guy and but I think it'd be cool if the band played this in concert and stretched it out for awhile like one of those ridiculous jams you hear on every double live 70s rock album. I love that stuff! Maybe the band doesn't have the patience for something like that (or the interest in it) or they think half the audience would walk out, but I wouldn't mind.
And I like the title. Matched with the lyrics, it's nicely cryptic. |

I think you might've hit something there. I wonder if this dichotomy has anything to do with herb.
So you want to strobe out to 1826 for like 20 min right? |

I really like how they play around with those 3 to 5 notes in the first half, but I really love the second half. It's air guitar heaven, and I usually end up dancing around in the store whenever I play it. Awesome. |

It took awhile to enjoy this one. I always thought it was too repetitive but you have to hold out for the last part. That's when it kicks in. |

Hi there, first post (obviously). Been listening to Frank since Doolittle. Kind of living in isolation and just stumbled onto this site a couple days ago. All this time....I thought I was the only one that thought the man was a genius.
1826...I just got BLD a few weeks ago. One of the characteristics about most of the music I come to LOVE is that it makes a very bland initial impression on me. I remember listening to Doolittle once, putting it aside for a couple weeks before coming back to it, and then gradually getting addicted. On BLD, 1826 is one of the first songs I got into. (The VERY first was the first Black Rider.) I'm not sure what that means, but it might mean that its not as sophisticated as his best stuff. Or that I won't end up liking it quite as well. Or I'm a dork.
I do think the song is too long some of the times I'm listening, but by the time I get to the raw jam-out session at the end I'm totally rocking. Maybe I just don't have the patience to wait to get there some days.
There's a riff in there that reminds me of Tom Petty's Running Down a Dream. I hope that's not sacrilege, but I dig that song, too.
Anyway, its nice to find the board. I'll be a fixure now. Its like discovering your favorite restaurant and salivating over the menu anticipating many future visits. But cheaper.

Hey, Welcome Field Hockey Player. Noticed you're from TN. That's cool, I'm in Oak Ridge about 45 minutes from you. I've been to Chatanooga quite often over the past few years. You ever been out to Oak Ridge or Knoxville?
I'm not a huge fan of 1826 myself. I usually listen to it all the way through if I'm gonna listen to BLD, but there are so many better tracks on there IMO. It's especially NOT a strong follow-up for one of the contenders for my favorite FB song of all time, "End of Miles." Gawd I love that tune.

I like this song very much.
Absolutely one of the best on the album.
This song takes some patience, but the payoff is great--it is a FUGUE.
The responses about this song shows how FB fans seem to have totally different ideas of what a good song is... |
