first timer in the forum. thx for having me.
does anyone else feel that on all FB albums, his best songs are usually the first 3, 4 or 5 songs as well as the last song?
SMYT - nadine, everything is new, favorite kiss.......manitoba BLD - Cal Bound, V&G, BLD DW - velvety, out of state, kingly cave, san antone......fields of marigold TOTY - pong thru freedom rock....pie in the sky FB - LA, Ramona, Ego, Fu manchu.....dont you rile.
...you get the idea....seems like the more average tracks are the ones in the middle of the album.

I half agree with you George. Yes, the first 3-5 are usually awesome. As well as the last track. But the middle tracks are also amazing. All of them. Show me a bad song on Orange, TOTY, DITS, SMYT, or even BLD, DW and COR. And I only say "or even" because these are the albums people most often feel are lacking somehow, or have weaker songs. I'm gonna say here and now that I LOVE Dance War AND Kicked in the Taco. And all of BLD rules. Sure, some of these songs aren't my favourites, but they can't all be faves. In a sea of 10s, he has a few 8s and 9s. |

yeah....it's hard to generalize. all of the openers are great ('blast off' being the worst and its still a good song). 'brackish boy' is probably the worst song on self-titled, 'kicked in the taco' off COR, 'hostess w/ the mostess' off TOTY....there isn't a bad song off the bronze album. all the so-so songs are somewhere in the middle, and thus frank puts them in the middle somewhere.
best closer? i say Manitoba or The man who was too loud. |

The first few songs are usually the best, I agree...Bossanova is that way to me also. Another thing I noticed is that the second to the last song is generally a weak song. Coastline, Skeleton Man, If It Takes All Night, Whispering Weeds...2 of those are some of my least favorite songs of his ever.

I spent some of my childhood in a little seaside town called Skegness, and my parents still live near there.
This is one reason why I just love Coastline - it reminds me of everytime I go back there, "I'm gonna turn round in my tracks". Everytime I go back there I take one look around and I want to leave straight away.

Coastline is so beautiful! You are all nuts! I think SMYT is weak until the fifth song is over (with the exception of Everything is New). Once Horrible Day starts, the album takes off. And I think Manitoba is not that great.
Looking at BLD, the whole album is wrought with fabulous material. I do like the first five tracks on DW a ton, but then again, Heloise is one of the best tracks, imo. I actually like the middle of DITS best (Bullet, Swimmer, IITAN). I think Robert is way overrated around here.
Blah! There is nothing being gained! |

Couldn't agree more. Coastline is a highlight for me, only thing wrong with it is its too short. I also noticed you listen to Built To Spill/Doug Martsch from the "other bands" thread in the Pixies section; so apparently great minds think alike. Built to Spill and Frank Black are the only bands I'd happily give my left nut to see live and meet backstage. |

It seems to me like all of the incredibly smart people here dig on Skeleton Man. Oooo! Diss! Kidding of course; but what the fuck is wrong with this song? Unarguably one of Frank's best.

I absolutely hate skeleton man and I really can't explain why. I just do. I personally usually prefer to listen to the 2nd halves of Frank's albums.

Actually I think FB&C was an effort to show how little Frank cares about "albums" (something about how it's an artificial format (as compared to singles I assume?). So anyways he decided to simply sequence the songs alphabetically. So there's not much use mulling over it. It's one of the Catholics albums in any case. |

I don't like the placement of Skeleton Man on Pistolero. After I Want Rock and Roll and before So. Bay? Skeleton Man doesn't fit well there. It should have been a b-side.

Never seen B2S Harring? I saw them a few months ago. The Detroit crowd was really lame (I think they'd only ever heard Car) but they sounded insanely good. The guitar work was obviously mind-blowing. I'm yet to see Mr. Black, I missed my chance at the Double Doors cuz I wasn't 21 :( |

Actually I saw BTS for the first time last year in Seattle, and it was an amazing show...great setlist, smallish venue, every song sounded amazing. Definately in my top 3 shows all time.
Saw Frank & Catholics summer of 99 in Seattle also. Unfortunately we got to the venue about 3 hours before Frank took the stage and I drank myself silly waiting for the show to start. Still had an awesome time but couldn't remember the setlist and was too drunk to fully appreciate the experience.
Having seen both of them only once, I would still be willing to part with certain body parts to see (and hopefully meet) them.

I'm going to have to throw in another vote for Coastline. That may just be my favorite track on SMYT.

Frank must have liked Skeleton Man a good bit though, he played it constantly on tour after Pistolero came out...
And Coastline, I love this song. My dad even liked it and he's 64.
and If it takes All night sucks? THat song kicks ass. It has real live feel to it and it always gets my excited to go out to a concert or a club or a bar and have sex all night... love that song...
