Well, I've only been to three:
Dandy Warhols (Nottingham Rock City 27/11/03) - atmosphere was a bit flat but enjoyable nevertheless
Radiohead (Nottingham Arena 29/11/03) - very very good live band. You might not like all of the songs (especially Kid A) but they are infinitely better in a live setting.
FB&C (Shepherd's Bush Empire 1/12/03) - awesome!!!
p.s. Thom Yorke did a short chatty bit part way through the concert. He asked if Stereophonics had played at the venue yet. It was kind of a rhetorical question. After a slight pause he said "That'll be good". Much mirth all round!
On my list for 2004:
Nick Cave PJ Harvey Coldplay Flaming Lips Mike Patton (under whatever guise)
...and a band called the Pixies. You may have heard of them. I'm told they're quite good and could go far.

Mmmm... It's gonna be a bit ridiculous, I've been to 4 concerts this year and 3 of them were to see Frank Black. So:
1 Frank Black - Paris, Batofar (27/06) 2 Frank Black & Catholics - Paris, Bataclan (29/11) 3 Wampas - Paris, Cigale (13/06) 4 Frank Black & Catholics - Evreux, l'Abordage (21/10)

1. FB & TC's - Astoria, London, UK 2. Frank solo in Cambridge, MA 3. FB & TC's - Brighton, UK 4. Liz Phair - Avalon, Boston, MA (*I don't like her new stuff but she played about half of Exile in Guyville and I was thrilled!)
Man, I can't think of others. I guess other than Frank, I had kinda a boring music year. But I am not complaining!

1 - White Stripes in Paradiso, Amsterdam Best live performance I've ever seen! But at the time I didn't know every song they played... Right now I do, but I'm afraid the next time they visit my country they'll play in a stadium, not in a place with an intimate atmosphere like Paradiso 2- Frank Black and the Catholics in the Melkweg, Amsterdam Best gig I've ever seen from FB & the C's, but I've seen them before, that's why the White Stripes come first 3- Frank Black and the Catholics in the Effenaar, Eindhoven Second time I went to a concert with my sister. This time it was her turn to see my hero... 4- Silverchair in Paradiso, Amsterdam My sister gave me a ticket to congratulate me with graduating high school. It's her favourite band, and her first time to see her idols, and the first time I went to a concert with my sister. 5- Interpol in the Willem 2, Den Bosch Never heard any song from this band before I've seen them, but I was quite impressed!
I'm bored with the valleys and bored by the peaks. So I bought a ticket to the freaks |

Though! I can't do this
historically, Throwing Muses at Tivolli Utrecht, because I never saw them before, and they don't play that much, since they are somewhat broken up (I hope Jo won't attack me now)
Another one I really liked was Guided By Voices' show in Paradiso, Bob Pollard really makes you feel at ease, he's great. As a huge fan of his music I would say, that it was probably the best of this year, I really had a blast although I didn't know half of the songs (that shitty GBV and Pollard Solo have more than 30 records I guess).
There was one show of Nada Surf that I loved, I bought two shirts and one home made belt. Pretty interesting stuff!
Jon Spencer was hot this year, he did give us a lot new material, but I'm not familiar with all his material anyway. My brother is as mad on JSBX as I am on FB.
I saw two Richard Thompson gigs with my father and the whole family. One was a seated show, they don't flame like real shows. And the setlist was identicall both shows. But he's a great guitarist and most of all a great writer. Thanks Dad I fucking had a blast!
I would also want to thank my dad for the Grey De Lisle gig this year, it was nice, Marvin Etzioni (wrong spelling) should be in the Catholics. He's as crazy as Rich Gilbert!
Sebadoh was dissapionting, I arrived late, stood at the back and couldn't see Lou or Jason and there were too many people talking and laughing in my nearest space, I only knew one album at the time so that didn't help.
My first Radiohead gig, all I can say is: yes! Now I'm a fan! I love the Kid A and Amnesiac songs!
The FB gigs were simply adorable, the first one was not half as good as the second one. But at FB concerts I'm always shaking and screaming and dancing, so it is always satisfying. But it is also a bit dissapionting everytime this year, I don't know why, I can't stand it when it ends, I want more, I always want more.
That sums it up, It was a great year personally, 2003 rocked!

The concerts I went to in 2003 :
1) Frank Black & TC (Seraphin) - Bataclan, Paris - 11/29 : AWESOME 2) White Stripes (Whirlwind Heat-Peaches) - Olympia, Paris - 05/22 : AWESOME (best gig of the year, before I saw FB & TC - Whirlwind Heat is another Detroit band produced by Jack White, they are different cos there are only a drummer, a bassist and a crazy singer jumping all over the place, no guitar, some electronic noises : funny / Peaches is rather special too, a kind of sado-maso electro pop rock; some people wanted her to go away but I think she likes so much provocation that she loves performing in front of a sceptic and troubled audience : weird but I liked her will and energy versus adversity) 3) Black Rebel Motorcycle Club (IMA Robot) - Nouveau Casino, Paris - 08/26 : AWESOME (IMA Robot : glamourous poprock with an energetic singer, not bad) 4) Red Hot Chili Peppers - Palais Omnisport Paris Bercy, Paris - 02/12 : GREAT 5) David Bowie (Dandy Warhols) - Palais Omnisport Paris Bercy, Paris - 10/21 : GREAT SHOW ( but we got 40 minutes less than the day before !!! - It's my point of view, but The Dandy Warhols really suck !) 6) Eiffel (french rock band) - La Maroquinerie, Paris - 12/11 : GREAT They played with a drum, a bass, a piano and 2 guitars as usual, but that show was very special cos they added 3 violons, 1 cello (violoncelle) and pipes too (how do you say haut-bois in english ?), and it was quite excellent in spite of 2 or 3 little technical problems - and they did a tonic cover of "Les écorchés", thinking of Bertrand Cantat ...) 7) Placebo - La Trocardière, Nantes (France ... no, there isn't only Paris in France ... allez les jaunes !) : NOT BAD ( but I hate when they hang their hands up to make the audience do the same ... we're not sheep !!! actually, there were lots of sheep ... shame - the shot was not bad, some good moments, but I went crazy on the cover of "Where is my mind", but it was the last song ... makes me think that I still haven't understood why a band like FB & TC was opening for Placebo in Bercy in october !!! ) 8) Bob Dylan - Zénith, Paris - 11/13 : they began the show right on time ... while hundreds of people were still queuing ... including me ... so we missed 15 minutes. The audience was older than usual, but still smoking strange stuff, the set was good, Dylan never left his keyboards and a part of the audience only saw his back during 2 hours !) 9) Audioslave - Olympia, Paris - 01/14 : first show of this new so called great band ... disappointing cos the voice of Chris Cornell doesn't often match with the music played by the other 3, and Tom Morello's solos sounded flat in comparison with the RATM ones.
Between the 07/04 and the 06/07, I went to the festival Les Eurockéennes, in Belfort (France), so here is my list for that : 1) Radiohead : EXCELLENT 2) Nada Surf (great covers of "L'aventurier" of Indochine, and "Love will tear us apart" of Joy Division) : GREAT 3) Electric Six : GREAT AND TONIC SHOW 4) The Polyphonic Spree : FUNNY to see 15 or 20 people wearing white dresses, singing and smiling and having fun 5) Dionysos : french band, good show 6) Eiffel : the same band I talked about before ... but without violins ! rock rock rock ! 7) Hell is for heroes : funny singer climbing on the stage, fun. 8) Tom Mc Rae : not bad, but not really my kind of music 9) Asian Dub Foundation : idem, I rarely listen to them
I hope 2004 will also be a rich year. I think I'll go back to Belfort cos there is a very special atmosphere in festivals. At the moment, I'm thinking of going to see the Distillers, M (crazy french singer), the White Stripes for the 3rd time (and maybe a former reuniting band we know a lot on this forum ...) and lots of other ones. |
