and I am astounded at the consistency of this record, as well as the accessibility of it. Yes, I'm a big fan of Frank's, and have everything he's released, but I would say that this record is by far the most instantly catchy record he's ever released, and he's hit a peak with songwriting yet again. Normally it takes me a few listens to really understand what's going on with his songs, but this record immediately jumps out of my stereo, into my ears, and goes straight to my heart. I've heard a few of the songs live (Horrible Day, Manitoba, The Snake, probably others) so I did have an idea of what to expect. I think these songs benefit from the 2 track production more than any of the other Catholics records have so far, cuz that approach to playing/recording is conducive to the best way of conveying both the lyrics and mood of the songs. I really like this album. But I can't say too much yet since it's still brand new to me. While I always feel Frank is underrated and underappreciated, this is the first album I've heard of his in a few years that REALLY makes me feel the world is missing out on some amazing music. I think this album would be a great introduction to solo Frank Black.

I agree with you. When I first bought the album I listened to it with a good friend who I feel has pretty interesting musical taste, though not into as much guitar driven rock as I. He had never heard any Frank other than Pixies. He liked it on first listen, and I think it is the light country feel on certain tracks that is easily listenable, as well as really beautiful, wonderful songs like Manitoba, etc. I normally have not been as conscious of the lyrics in Frank's music outside of how they sound rhythmically and of occassional phrases, but after visiting this site and actually reading along with the music recently, I have gotten re-ignited by all my Frank Black cd's. SMYT certainly continues the excellent lyric pattern. |

I'd have to agree. It didn't take much for me to enjoy the album...like you, at times, certain albums took me a listen or two to latch on, but SMYT just blew me away.

I get the feeling every time theres a new album out there, you get another installment of Franks views and thoughts of the world today. SMYT for me is like a followup of Six-sixty-six, the whole country-style. Back in 98, i thought it was just for fun, but it were the next thing. Maybe you like it maybe you dont, but still you buy the new releases. Maybe all this can sound like i hate the new-style, i dont cause i can still hear the old melodies back there, in the background.

I am not sick of it, but I definetly burned out on it a little. In the last week I have gone back to the self titled catholics CD (the "Bronze" one) and am digging that immensley. You must cleanse your palate once in awhile. At this point I am pretty biased, so I don't think it would take me more than one listen to get into any new Frank. Bring it! |

I'm with you ladies. I listened to it for a couple weeks straight at work and at home. I had people at work singing along to "it's a hard boiled egg" and "everything is blue" until they were sick of it, but they did actually like it. My best friend who I work with is bigtime gangster rap fan, that's basically all he listens to, and 3 doors Down lately, he liked SMYT a lot, esp. New House of the Pope, obviously because we like to smoke dope.
So I haven't listened to it much lately, but that's where the tabs come into play. I never get tired of playing and singing FB tunes... |

Hey, y'all this is my first post--long time lurker.
I love this album, the best album I've heard this year easily. Probably the best disc Ive heard since the Ugly Casanova disc.
I, too have burnt out a lil on it, but I just listen to BLD and recently, the first solo disc (Two Spaces is great!) till I get refreshed. |

I was a bit burnt out an Frank Black's music around the time of Show Me Your Tears release, and felt I wouldn't be able to enjoy it properly at the time of it's release. My Ween obsession had been revived with the release of 'quebec' and I was listening to a few other bands that I hadn't listened to much, or at least hadn't listened to in a while. But after having posted here a lot the last month or so, it occurred to me that I really needed to hear SMYT so when I had a little money to spend, I bought it and now it's in heavy rotation in my life.

burnt out ON Frank Black's music. I hate making mistakes. Is there a way to edit posts here so I don't have to post again to correct myself since I'm too lazy to proofread my posts? Ah well, it gets me closer to getting another power up, and that's all that matters to me. Obviously, with my average of less than 1 post per day.
