Today's Random Song of the Day is The Black Rider (opener).
What do you think of it?
lyrics Come on along with the Black Rider We’ll have a gay old time Lay down in the web of the black spider I''ll drink your blood like wine
So come on in it Ain’t no sin take Off your skin And dance around in your bones
Come on along with the Black Rider We’ll have a gay old time
Anchors away with the Black Rider I''ll drink your blood like wine I''ll drop you off in Harlem with the Black Rider Out where the bullets shine
So come on in it Ain’t no sin take Off your skin And dance around in your bones
Come on along with the Black Rider We’ll have a gay old time
Come on along with the Black Rider I want your company Come on along with the Black Rider I''ve got just the thing for thee
I''ll have the veal life A lovely meal That’s how I feel May I use your skull for a bowl
Come on a along with the Black Rider
We’ll have a gay old We’ll have a gay old time

To be honest, I don't think this track is good enough to be on an FB album once, let alone twice. |

But California Bound doesn't make a good album opener. However, it's an amazing 2nd song. Don't skip Black Rider.

i know it doesn't, but my dislike for the black rider is such that i put up with it. and i think that california bound is such a great song that it can pull it off as a 'pseudo-opener' |

How can you not love it? It's fun, they're clearly into it, it feels more like they're jamming around with it than going through the painful process of recording. And it's a great opener, bouncy, fun, all that good stuff.

This is a problem for me. Having skipped Black Rider #1, as you say, California Bound doesn't make a good opener, so the whole opening sequence of tracks sounds just wrong.
There was some discussion elsewhere on the forum about how much a tracks position on an album affects how we think of it. (The context of that discussion was Silver, and whether it would be more popular if it didn't get in the way of Gouge Away). I think that this is one album that suffers from a similar malaise, and that the opening version of Black Rider would be better placed at the end of the track-list (needless to say, I think the version of Black Rider that does in fact occupy that position should be banished into the fires of monster-mash hell)

i just don't like it. the very beginning of a song is very important to me - and the black rider is an example (of not very many) that i dislike predominalty because of the beginning. |

I think both versions of this song are fantastic - and when they play it live it's a stomping little number: aggressive, catchy, poetic. I'm a mentalist for it.
I like to think that it's the sort of song FB & the C's would play in the 'Titty Twister'...

Not sure The Black Rider is a good opener - it's not bad but it's really not representative of the album. IMO End of Miles would have been a perfect intro, in every respect.

Yes me too! It's a crazy track And I saw from Dusk Till Dawn two days ago (I didn't like the movie, it's not a bad one, but the ending really dissapionted me) and the band in the 'Titty Twister' should have been FB and the C's

I read this before on this board and I just don't get it. I even saw that someone said: I see California Bound as the opener and Wishpering Weeds as the closer, very weird, I just don't see the problem with a) this song and b)with covers generaly

That's exactly why I don't like it - it sounds more like a soundcheck or a studio "loosener". I don't even think it fits stylistically with the rest of BLD - did it go on there twice cos FB lost a bet? |

They did a bunch of takes of it, and it drifted from what you hear on track 1 (an early take) to the closer (a late take) over the course of the session. They liked both and couldn't decide, so they bookended it. Plus, it's pretty cool how the song totally drifted.
If nothing else, it's a cool insight into the way they record. Who knows how many alternate versions of all of their songs could be out there.

Oh, and whoever said End of Miles would be a perfect opener, if we lost Black Rider, I'd totally agree.

Agree about End Of Miles, however, I don't think California Bound should follow then. They're the 2 best songs of Black Letter Days IMO, and they couldn't be close to each other. Maybe BLD (the title track) after End Of Miles?

I have a problem with it as an album-opener too. I feel like it's more of a B-sides level song, personally, and I skip it most every time. It seems that happens frequently for me though - I have a hard time with some of their choices for what goes onto an album, versus what gets cut. But that's just little ol' me, and I can live with skipping a track if I feel like I can't deal at the moment.
It's a good cover, but it's too well-known a song for me, and is better as a closer, or a middle track. I want something new and riveting, to draw me in at the start and have me begging for more. Something more dynamic. But again, this is my lame opinion.

Well, if End of Miles were opening, I think I'd probably put ... actually, I just went through and you're right, Black Letter Days is probably the best song of the lot to put next as track 2.
Runners up: Valentine & Garuda - Loses a little too much energy for track 2, but otherwise great. Cold Heart of Stone - Same as above, would also need to remove initial drum hit.

Just a matter of opinion, obviously, but I always skip "Black Rider". But it is nice seeing a songs progression. End of Miles makes a good 1st track, but I feel it would make an even better last track.
I think Califorina Bound makes a fine 1st track. But then again I was probably one of the few who was saddened that he put vocals to "Velvety".....

I like Tom Waits a lot and I think the idea of openeing and closing with two dramatically different versions of one song is very cool. But when I listen to a Frank Black album, I wanna hear Frank Black songs. I usually skip at least one version of Black Rider. |

What sultan said, except i don't skip any versions.
Sure BLD would have been a tighter album if it had 4-5 less songs.... (I'm gonna start a thread on this) But, if frank would have cut songs off the album, you would have spent some more money to buy another album with the b-side quality songs frank tossed onto BLD for free. |

How can anyone resist the promise of a gay old time? I never skip it. Sometimes I play it twice.

I like it lots. |

I agree. The Black Rider would have made a good b-side, like Take What You Want and Down in the Hole. Again, it's not bad, it just doesn't sound like the rest of the album. |

I always feel guilty skipping songs. How can you people live with yourselves? Doesn't it just eat you up inside? Can't you hear The Black Rider whispering, "Listen to me. Listen to me"? |
