One of my favorites has always been the song "Dog in the Sand". Very simple and moody with great lyrics. Now I know he records live and minor fuck ups will surface in some of the songs, which at times can make a song that much more endearing, but right after he says "See her in the sand" there is some sort of twang or pang that irks the shit out of me for some reason! Does anyone else notice this or am I just being an overly picky bastard? Sounds like someone dropping a guitar in the distant backround. |

I think that is the piano/synthesizer or what ever they use for that track. Probably just a wrong/additional key played. No biggie.

That particular performance of that song is so amazing that anything happening on the track is part of the entire songs beauty. If it weren't for that noise, the take would not be the same, and perhaps would have come out differently. Don't let that noise bother you. Accept it. I'm starting to sound like a hippy.

Yes, Humpy Wheeler...I too notice that sound! But what REALLY drives me nuts is how bad and off beat everyone is in the opening intro of Manitoba...and it's such a beautiful song! The musicians have to slow down to Scott's time beat right before the first line. UGH! I have a big problem with that. Funny that it is the last song too on the album, much like Dog in the Sand.

yeah! i noticed that the first time i heard the song on the cd, its kinda funny that they let it go, but in the end i dont think it matters much because if you have a good take with a little mistake then its still a good take. but its just funny cause it seems like something that wouldnt happen to them

Yes. I absolutely prefer the solo acoustic versions.

Weird. I don't hear the bad timing on Manitoba. I'm trying to hear it, by counting off the beats leading into the section mentioned and everything, and I can't hear it.

its at like :26 into the song, right when it changes out of the intro, the ride cymbal/drums are off, well the rest of the band is off i guess and the drums are on time. its not that big of a deal, but you can hear them hitting at different times

I believe it was David Byrne who said,"Be suspicious of any music that sounds absolutely perfect." I'll buy that, it's nice to know that even though they are amazing musicians-they are still human. |

Hmmmm....if we are talking about the 2:59 mark "See her in the sand", then there is no keyboard/misplayed note or anything. It is the reverb trail/tail of the Joeys previously played note. It just overlaps for a partial second into the next bass note/acoustic strum/slide guitar chord which creates that minor dissonance.
