Maybe some of you have heard of Jamen Brooks, but his music is somewhat similar to what FB&Catholics are doing right now. Here are a few downloads from RollingStone: http://www.rollingstone.com/dds/moretracks.asp?artist=13043
Any other artists out there who are making music that's taking the same direction? (Granted, most of us believe that FB&Catholics are blazing new trails, but perhaps there are others that are doing similar stuff) |

I'm sorry, but IMHO that [music] is awful. And typical MTV/Viacom. The chorus was unlistenable, but that's just me. You'd have to do a little explaining on your point of how this in any way relates to FB&tC's current work. I'm all for talking about stuff like this, but I think you might get a better reception/more response if it were in General Chat-Offtopic. <shrug> I dunno. |

I guess it was a shakey comparison to make...I should have been a little more specific. I was actually referring to the track "Nero's Song" as being similar to FB's current work. You're right that Brook's sound is more over-produced than FB&Catholics. It really is hard to make a comparison....only brought up the topic to see if there are others out there who have found stuff that sounds like FB& Catholics new work. |

Hhhmmm, yeah, I didn't listen to that track, so maybe that's why I missed it. It's hard for me to think of someone quite like them. It might be a chicken and the egg thing, since when I hear them it's hard to separate everything I have heard before, and all the previous experiences I've had with the Pixies and solo work - it creates too much of a gestalt in my head. Wow, I may not even be making sense to myself now...heheh. |

Yeah, I agree with the whole chicken egg thing. It's easier to locate the chickens instead of the eggs....stay with me here....I'm listening to the Beatles or Beach Boys I'll hear something very FB or Pixie-esque and realize that the way Lennon screams at the end of "Revolution" or the chord played before "Hard Day's Night" were influences for FB. It all comes back to FB...he's the Dada master - turning it all inside out. |

Yesss, yessss, it's all starting to make sense now! <rubs hands together and waddles off Igor-style> I'll have to ponder on that awhile.... :)

Hey, eljefe, I just remembered that several people here on the forum have mentioned Steve Earl as being in a similar vein to FB&tCs - you may want to check out some of his music - I haven't had a chance to yet, so I may be way off - I hope I remembered the name right. Cheers!

yep.
i like both steve earle and frank black, but for different reasons. i don't see much similarity between them - except that they're both americans. i understand that people's opinion is that FB has "gone country" over the last couple of records, but it still strikes me that he's just doing an impression of country music - "faux country" if you will. i know this is going to make some people angry, but that's just how i feel.
steve earle is the real deal. he tries to make rock records and they *still* come out country - right down to the last dobro, bro.
SE is much more overtly political as well, in his music and in his public persona. he was a guest on "the o'reilly factor" for crap's sake!
by all means, check steve earle out - i just saw him in october and the show blew me away.
just my two cents.
