ATTENTION ALL,
I have an obsession with the female voice. I genuinely like listening to music with a hint of Estrogen. Is anybody else out there like this and/or does anybody have anything Freudianesque to say about it?
NOTE: This thread is based on my reaction to http://forum.frankblack.net/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=4342.

I'm with 'ya... it has to be in the context of having a male singer in there, too, though... maybe it's like musical porn to have a guy and a girl singing. All I know's I'm into it.

I don't really think it has to have a guy in there, although there are some good songs like that. Has anyone ever heard the Sneaker Pimps? I don't know that girls name but she has a sexy voice. Also Sarah McLaughlin, Betch Hirsch, Liz Phair (despite the inferior state of her music now she still sounds very doable...) Bjork (sometimes)and the girl that sings on the newest Air album...don't know her name, but all these chicks have really hot voices, and there's not a male among them.

See, there's just something about having both singers that gives you more freedom to do different things with the vocals, I guess.

I personally like Ani DiFranco and the Indigo Girls, and I am a man.

Although you have to be in just the right kind of mood for it, I don't mind the vocals in Blonde Redhead. It's hard for me to like female vocalists - not the female voice, just the way many females sing - kind of airy and affected?....Delerium and such get on my nerves for just that reason. Throwing Muses, obviously Kim Deal, Cat Power, scout Niblett - all very good. Oh yeah, cocteau Twins is ok, when they aren't using real words. I know there's more, can't think of 'em just now.
Edit -Um, I'm a girl, btw. :) Does that disqualify me from commenting? It's not very Freudian-esque, but it's my paltry 2 cents....

did you mastrubate while your mother was singing when you were little? This is more of a behavioral interpretation though. Keep your hands over the blankets. |

No one has mentioned Polly Harvey. Her voice is very special. Just listen to her 'To bring you my love' album. She can hit some seriously low notes.
My record shelf is groaning under the weight of Cocteau Twins records. I like Liz Fraser's voice a lot.
Stereolab also good (although I need to be in the right mood)

I really enjoyed Mazzy Star's first album, Carolynanna - I haven't heard their newer stuff - do you know if it's as good?
I loved PJ's first few albums, then it lost something for me. Maybe it got too glossy for her personality (for me, anyway)?
I forgot, I like Norah Jones' voice, but I don't like how her album is so...boring - too much sameness. I look forward to her writing her own songs and maybe expanding musically a little more.

Thanks carolynanna! - I need to listen to more of this kinf of music right now. It helps the creativity for some reason.
I should add Laurie Anderson, Kate Bush, Billie Holiday, Etta James, Bessie Smith, Ella Fitzgerald, Edith Piaf, old Loretta Lynn stuff, and Emmylou Harris has a beautiful voice, though I only like some of her material (how could I forget all these? Gettin senile, I guess).

Aha, I'm not the only one who listens to Kate Bush!
Hey apl, you should check out Stina Nordenstam then, I bet you'd like her. |

Yep - I used to be a fanatic. I even have a picture-disk lp, with her in green leg-warmers hahaha! "Hounds of Love" and "The Dreaming" are great. I can't explain why I like her songs so much. Something really intangible and quirky. I love the chorus in "Suspended in Gaffa", and the lyrics "I try to get nearer but as it gets clearer / there's something appears in the way, it's a plank in me eye / with a camel who's trying to get through it / am I doing it? Can I have it all now?"... Oops! I could go on and on about her work!quote: Originally posted by Carolynanna

Oh and I know I've mentioned this but, The Lion & the Cobra by Sinead, is probably one of my favourite CDs ever, no word of a lie. |

My fav female muso is, hands down, Sarah Slean. She's got it all....and it's not just the voice, but what they're singing too..
I also really like Robyn Hitchcock. But he's a 'he'. But if i were a woman, i might be caught swooning in a really quirky way..heh |
