Strangley, I like that song - I'm not sure that I would buy the album, but the pop orchestrations are very well done, and the singer has the charisma to go far. I actually ran into that song on epitonic a while ago (http://www.epitonic.com/artists/newpornographers.html), and I still feel the same way about it. The lyrics are great. I think it is a group/mindset that I might get into at some point in the future - it's very good working music, for when you're cleaning up in the print lab at 4 in the morning, high on lithotine fumes.... |

I like that song. I've never heard anything by this band. I like vocals and I guess it is a synth in it... I could see myself listening to more of their stuff... |

That one's good too. The backup vocals remind me of the B52s, and there's a little Happy Mondays in this? Every time that guitar kicks in I have a moment of panic "Is it gonna work?" and it all comes out ok. I know, I'm weird. The closing guitar has even a little Pixies dare I say! Holy moly. (Listening as I type). This song makes me want to hear more. It's hard for me to like such over the top happy pop, but I'm willing to try. |

I know, the happy/poppy isn't usually my thing, but it's just so infectious. They have mellower stuff in there to balance it, but it's so upbeat and can be a good counterweight for a lot of the stuff that I suspect we all tend to listen to.

i have this album, which i quite dig.. some of the songs are immediately catchy (like this one) and some take a bit more time.. i give New Pornographers a thumbs up, and "safe bet" status if you're looking for something new to check out. |

I guess I should've picked something a little more obscure. Sorry guys! Next time maybe a song from Spoon's Telephono, that's a pretty rare record I think (though most people have at least heard of Spoon).

Ok, I was listening to "It's Only Divine Right" and I like it, it's really peppy but it seems like it goes on a bit too long and starts to drag a bit towards the end, maybe I just need to hear it a few more times as this is my initial listen.

Floop, what song would you've picked off the album since you own it? At least then we can discuss something.

well, i'm the only one so far.. wait and see what other people think..
i think you picked a good song for introducing people to the album.. it gives a nice taste of their fast moving, catchy, ultra-poppy sound.. same with It's Only Divine Right..
i also quite like Ballad of A Comeback Kid and The Laws Have Changed..
the chorus on The Laws Have Changed is one of the best chorus' in the world.

Fun n' poppy. Can't go wrong with just about anything off of Electric Version. Though I prefer Carl Newman's and Neko Case's vocals to Dan Bejar's. |

I think Divine Right's more accessible but The Laws Have Changed is the better song, it just takes a little more time. That said, they're both pretty accessible.
The girl is Neko Case, whom some of you have probably heard of.

I haven't heard her solo stuff, but I think she has an amazing voice and is a pretty solid singer to boot.

I think I DL-ed this album from eMusic a while ago. Never listened to it.
-
I think I'll look it up, though. The first two times I listened to this I thought it was trash, but it's beginning to grow on me.
-
Who does it remind me of?
B-52's?

haha! Well, apparently it doesn't matter that you said it too, cause I didn't hear CoF right, either. I had a brain fart and was thinking of Nico Icon. Lordy, I need help. |

This is, so far, the only band that I would buy into. The female voice is much appreciated. I have always paid attention to bands with females, for some reason. Examples are bangles, hole, pixies, L7, smashing pumpkins, tori amos, bjork, shania twain, it has been awhile so I do not remember much else due to my intoxication and 'The New Pornographers' playing in the background. I think I will create a Freudianesque thread about this obsession I have with the female voice.

Heh, highly recommended. Glad that everyone seems to be enjoying them! I don't know who I'd say they remind me of. A montage of styles, I suppose. There's a little bit of B-52's there, probably... mostly related to Neko.
