Roja means red in Spanish. Rosa I would guess is Rose.
I am not going to try to go into why they write so much in Spanish, and Joey is not particularly caucasian, though I don't know that you have to be Hispanic to write in Spanish....hopefully someone can elucidate. |

FRANK (OR FRANCIS, OR CHARLES, WHATEVER YOU PREFER TO CALL HIM) WAS FLUENT IN SPANISH AND EVEN STUDIED IN A SPANISH SPEAKING COUNTRY FOR A WHILE (SPAIN OR PERHAPS MEXICO...THE DETAILS HAVE LEFT ME). SO IT'S NOT THAT MUCH OF A STRETCH FOR HIM TO WRITE SONGS IN A LANGUAGE HE WAS SO WELL-VERSED IN....

Hey no problem - I was just playin around there, ThatOne. No kidding - I know how confusing it is when you are learning more than one language at once (I am by no means fluent in 3 languages, though!). I get my german, french and spanish all mixed up, even though I had spanish for 12 years, other languages seep in and replace the spanish words - some retention I've got, huh? Most of the time I have a hard enough time with the english language, to tell you the truth....getting old and senile, forgetting how to spell words...it's horrifying.
If the search function worked on this forum, I think there is a discussion of the topic you posted somewhere on here in the archives, but oh well. |

BF lived in Puerto Rico....ya know Crackity Jones, his gay, drug abusing roomate.... Had a great infatuation with the language and culture. That is what made some of their early stuff soo refreshing. Rosa is both a name and the color pink in spanish.
Joey is Filipino (like PR, colonized by the spanish) and they have a quite a few varieties of Tagalog (some having more spanish in them than others) though this probably had little bearing on BF's song writing in those days.

It's just you (on many levels). I dont always get to see every post, though I try to. I was trying to clear up where others had made generalizations. If someone confirmed FB living in PR and Joey actually being Filipino, then I missed it...but I read things on the order of FB maybe living in Spain or Mexico, and that Joey was not white. Specifics sure, but hopefully a bit more clear.

Close, it's rosado. Yes, I'm obsessing, but I gotta hold on to what little I do remember from those torturous years of training. Either it is...or they lied to me.... My world is now full of doubts and little green men. Goll-durnit! |

It's all in the Gouge Documentary. Joey is from the Philipines, and Frank studied in Puerta Rico, confirmed by their own two mouths.

Hello again from sunny Puerto Rico, the infamous "Isla De Encanta". Anyone having questions about the Spanish lyrics should visit the lyrics section in the best Pixies Page (Alec Eiffel).I translated everything that is in Spanish and explained a lot of stuff concerning Frank's brief stay in the island.Check the biography section too. Go to: membres.lycos.fr/alec Carlos Lopez (from Alec Eiffel's Spanish section) |

actually, I reread this thread, and you're both right, he was confirming things. I think it was just the way he worded his post that made me think he hadn't read the thread at all because he didn't write it as though he was confirming statements already made, just that he was answering the original question as though nobody else already had

apl4eris,
They lied to you man!
Actually, I only have access to Mexican and Puerto Rican spanish. Rosado is a rash. Rosa is both a color and a flower. Spaniards may or may not have other ideas about the words. And it may or may not be different for lower South America.

is there a reason why they wrte so much in Spanish?? they're like all white... ------------------------------------------------------------------- What a piece of nazi are you?. I´m Spanish, from Europe. Not from Africa, not from Mars, not from the South Pole.
So I´m white. We´re all white. Not green. Not brown. Not black. Not blue. Not beige. Not violet. WE ARE WHITE. Except for those Spanish citizens born to foreing parents from Africa, China, or similar situations. And except for those Spanish citizens who (sorrily) decide to go sightseing to USA: suddenly they become coloured.
Do you think that you, nazi wasp Americans are the ONLY white peolple in the world?. Remember we, not Anglos, not Saxons, not Protestants are the ones who discovered YOU and gifted you with european CULTURE. DOWN THE KLAN!! |

About Spanish words in "Surfer Rosa" and other Pixies albums, I´ve got to say that I, being a native Spanish speaker (from Spain) can´t understand a word. Perhaps Frank uses some kind of slang or "lingua franca" from Puerto Rico or Mexico. None of my Pixies-fans friends can understand what Frank meant in his lyrics. So I think that you, not even being Spanish speakers should not trouble yourselves about this question. Perhaps someone from Puerto Rico could explain them for us all. Or perhaps someone from the States, because I think that kind of slang (a strange mix of Spanish words and English grammars) that Frank uses could be the slang of native Noth Americans born to South American inmigrants.
An example of this difficult of understanding for Spanish speakers:
"Surfer Rosa", composed by an English word, "surfer" and a Spanish word, "rosa" could be understood as "A girl called Rosa that surfs", "A rose (flower) that surfs", "A surfer person who is pink"...
Or another example:
"Isla de Encanta". "Encanta" is not a Spanish word, even it may sound Spanish. It´s a kind of invented word like "desperado", invented by an English speaker who is trying to communicate with a Spanish person or by an English speaker from Spanish origins who has almost lost his ancesteers´ tonge and tries to remember how did his parents tell a word in Spanish for something he can´t propperly name in English
If Frank meant "Isle of Enchantment", the correct Spanish title would have been "Isla del Encanto" or "Isla del Encantamiento" ("Charm Isle") , or "Isla Encantadora" ("Charming Isle") |

Hey thanks, spoon! - it's been way too long since I took my Spanish classes. All those 12 years of learning down the drain. Maybe someday I'll be able to afford traveling to a Spanish-speaking country and I'll remember how to say "hello". ugh ;) I'm a girl, by the way. (not that it matters!) :)
