note sure this should be in the general chat:
We all know hang on to your ego was a outtake of 'I know there's an answer'. As put in the database, the other beach boys didn't really like the drugreference in the original lyrics that Brian Wilson/Tony Asher wrote. Well fuck them, they almost ruined Pet Sounds and definately ruined the Smile album.
I think Hang on to your ego is the better version of the two The lyric makes more sense: Hang on to your ego but I know you'll lose to fight they come like their peacefull but inside there are so uptight
makes more sense than:
I know there's an answer I know there's an answer but I had to find it by myself they come like their peacefull but inside there are so uptight
So I say: Way to go Frank Black to cover this version and not the inferior I know there's an answer. I think that FB version of Hang on to your ego is a bit strange though, very un-FB.
There's a discussion between David Thomas (of Pere Ubu fame) and FB about this song on the 'Katheleen' single of Pere Ubu.
goodbye!

the biggest coup in my opinion was he actually got brian wilson to appear in the video for the song...not only did brian wilson rarely appear in public in that time unless he was performing, he very very rarely did anything film related that wasnt related to the beach boys (interviews, rare in themself, too)
between this video and his appearance in "my own private idaho" there's not a lot of non-beach boys brian wilson out there since his very famous "surf cops" SNL sketch he was in during the early days of the show...and i dont believe there's been many if any appearances since in media.

According to some accounts, the SNL skit was a terrifying experience for Mr. Wilson. He was never a surfer, contrary to Beach Boys lyrics; that was his first time on a board. It was also an ill-timed attempt to get some exposure for Brian during a low point in his life. He was both physically and mentally unhealthy and just starting one of many rehab programs. Maybe this scared him away from media for a while (not that he wasn't anti-social before). BTW, if you missed the Pet Sounds symphonic tour there's a decent DVD from it available. Sorry if I'm rambling-I'm a Beach Boys fanatic!

wow! you mean he really appeared in the video? I thought it were just some pictures of him. I have to say I only saw it once and I didn't pay full attention
this is great news (although is been 10 years or so)

I though that bearded head appearing in the video was tony asher, not Brian Wilson. Now I'm gonna have to find it in the archives and watch it this week, and it's really not worth watching. Bastard. |

Did you know tony asher wrote some of the music on pet sounds, but brian never credited him. Tony asher is a good bloke, never met him, but my dad spoke to a writer of a Smile-related beach boys book who's a friend of Tony Asher and somehow my dad mentioned that I wrote songs (I really don't like it when my father does that) and this guy said: well let him e-mail me so Tony can contact him, cause he loves to help out young writers. I never did it, because I'm way too shy and because I doubt that I would even happen.

Interesting ... didn't know that. I always thought it was pure Brian. I've got an incredibly strange video of Jimmy Page playing with the Beach Boys in the mid-eighties. They look like they're at the beach and Jimmy looks pretty out of it, but the music sounds good ... I thik the song is 'Lucille' or something like that ..

Tony Asher wrote a lot of the lyrics to Pet Sounds. He wrote Caroline, No about a girl from college. It was originally "carol i know"...a girl carol he knew. I don't know what other lyrics he wrote, but that's how they collaborated.

A little side note here: Hang on to your Ego was not written by BW and Tony Asher, it was by BW and Terry Sachen. I find that very strange that on Frank's CD it says Tony Asher.
Does anyone know where I can get a copy of this SNL episode? Is it available on Kazza aor any of the SNL best of videos

It was a girl Tony knew from high school according to this quote from Tony:
"Was there a Caroline who may have inspired the song? Well, not exactly. I had broken up with my high school girlfriend, a dancer who'd moved to New York looking to make a break on Broadway. When I went east to visit her a short time later, I found that she had made some radical changes. Her name, incidentally, was Carol. And, yes--she had cut her hair. But what I saw went deeper than the cosmetic changes. She'd become a far more worldly person--it was clear that New York had caused her to grow up, and fast.
