As a birthday present to my sister I am making a Frank Black best of. It is fucking hard. It's including pixies stuff too... but not Pitolero because I don't have it.

I wanted to fit it all onto one MD using LP2 recording. This gives me 120 minutes. I've been trying to do about three tracks from each album, which is KILLING ME. I had to do five from TOTY because it has so many tracks. I also feel bad because I've only had most of his albums (Yellow, COR, Gold, DITS, DW, BLD) for about.. two weeks? And I've hardly listened to them. I actually went purely on what I'd heard from the tribute album to chose my BLD tracks (How You Went So Far, Whisperin Weeds, I Will Run After You)

Anyway, here's what I've done so far. It's a minidisc so I can always edit etc. and i probably will after I review it... so don't shout at me!

Isla De Encanta
Ed Is Dead
Holiday Song
River Euphrates
Cactus
Oh My Golly
Debaser
Hey
Gouge Away
Velouria
Down to the Well
Blown Away
Alec Eiffel
U-Mass
Letter to Memphis
Los Angeles
Czar
Brackish Boy
Whatever Happened to Pong?
Thallasocracy
Headache
Big Red
Pure Denizen of the Citizen's Band
The Marsist
You Ain't Me
All My Ghosts
Dog Gone
I Need Peace
Robert Onion
Bullet
I'll Be Blue
Velvety
His Kingly Cave
Heloise
How You Went So Far
I Will Run After You
Whispering Weed

For SMYT, I don't know yet.

SOOOOO... what would you have!?

if you can be bothered, have about 50 tracks MAX. You know, trying to do an official best of on a Cd of 20 tracks would bring death.

for DW: San Antonio, TX, Whiskey in your shoes and His Kingly Cave
for DITS: Bullet, Robert Onion, St. Francis Damn Disaster
for SMYT: Nadine, Coastline and Manitoba at least, I would do 5 tracks of this album.

How could you? How could you leave out the two best Pixies songs?
Caribou and Levitate Me, obviously.

I recently threw together an FB/catholics CD for someone, these are the few i chose:

Los Angeles
Czar
Ten Percenter
Brackish Boy
Parry the Wind High, Low
Whatever Happened to Pong?
Headache
Freedom Rock
The Marsist
Men in Black
I Gotta Move
I Switched You
I Love Your Brain
I Think I'm Starting to Lose it
Bullet
Hermaphroditos
Velvety
Whiskey in Your Shoes
1826
Nadine

This isnt necessarily a list I would prefer but I was trying to get the person I gave the CD to into francois noir and his trusty catholics, so I put catchier, rockier songs on.

I was working on the tracklist for a Frank Black "greatest" compilation (something to lend to potential converts) a while back. This is what I've got so far.

los angeles
hang on to your ego
czar
parry

calistan
speedy marie
freedom rock
superabound
white noise maker

men in black
every single time
dance war

dog gone
steak n sabre
suffering

bad harmony
western star
radcliffe
rock roll
skeleton man

st francis dam disaster
robert onion
i'll be blue
if it takes all night

Three more albums to go. As you can see I fell prey to the 5-song dilemma not once, but twice.

lol, itchload.

I hope that's a joke, because I'm laughing over here. But if you are joking, I'd have to disagree because I love Steak n Sabre and I Don't Want to Hurt You.

From SMYT I would definitely include Massif Centrale. I can't stop playing it so loud my hearing's leaving.
By the way, lucky sister. My older siblings were never musically enlightened.

Ha, yeah, mine is a joke. I'm a fan of some of those songs too, but I tried to include the most often dismissed FB songs (of which there are very few considering he has about 250)

Good stuff guys. I finished mine just before she came round today so didn't really have time to change things. From SMYT i put nadine, massif centrale, the snake and manitoba (a great ending to the album and also my compilation, i reckon).

Its not on an official album, but, Announcement is an awesome song. I have been wearing it out lately. It would be on a best of FB compilation if I did one.

Also, I thought I was the only person left using MD...

If songs not on albums qualifies, may I suggest "Pan American Highway"? Not just because I love it, but according to many threads, it's pretty well reputed among FB fans. "Alec Eiffel" is an excellent choice, and you definitely have three great songs from Dog in the Sand (Robert Onion is one the greatest songs he ever wrote). I personally wouldn't put "You Ain't Me" on there. Why not the song "The Cult of Ray"? It really epitomizes both his complexity and his influences in old rock and roll (that opening riff sounds like a typical classic by the Who). Plus, it has a great melody, imo. Just a suggestion, Steve.

nice...i love these kinda lists on msg boards cuz you really get a chance to see where everyone's slant and tastes generally fall. i read this days ago, but thinking about a list of what i'd put on my perfect CD got kinda sketchy.

ive made 5 personal mixes and all share songs and others contain only a song once. i tried to put together 1 comprehensive CD for myself and it was just too painful...so i broke it down into a 2-era CD collection my car CD player should be happy with. pre-catholics, and catholics era...i do believe its fair divide a line there:

CD#1
----

(I Want To Live On An) Abstract Plain
Adda Lee
Calistan
Czar
Don't Ya Rile 'Em
Every Time I Go Around Here
Old Black Dawning
Ole Mulholland
Parry the Wind High Low
Places Named After Numbers
Space Is Gonna Do Me Good
Superabound
The Last Stand of Shazeb Andleeb
The Vanishing Spies
This Is Where I Belong
Tossed (Instrumental Version)
Two Reelers
You Aint Me
You Never Heard About Me

CD#2
----

21 Reasons
85 Weeks
Bad Harmony
Billy Radcliffe
Coastline
Constant Sorrow Man
Dog Gone
Dog in the Sand
Down In The Hole
End of Miles
Heloise
How You Sent So Far
Humboldt County Massacre
Jane the Queen of Love
Massif Centrale
Pan American Highway
Smoke Up
St Francis Dam Disaster
The Farewell Bend
Western Star

...of course there's songs from both "eras" i'd like to have, but that's my fav's...been fun.

i love out of state...part of the reason it took so long is mostly CD2...a few songs i hated to leave off CD1 (ten percenter, sir rockaby, man of steel, los angeles) but CD2 i left off a lot more songs off which i would really like to have on the same disk...most specifically...out of state, all my ghosts, whispering weeds, do you feel bad about it, i switched you, and when will happiness find me again.

when we all have DVD audio player in our cars we can make more lists hehe
