Today's Random Song of the Day is Fields of Marigold.
What do you think of it?
lyrics Not for sugar not spice Not for fool’s paradise Not for giving advice Not for saving a soul There’s no reason for some Now I’m getting numb Now that moment has come Hey how about a drum roll For the Fields of Marigold?
Goodbye, I’m blowing a kiss to you So long, wonderful being you Goodnight we’ll soon be sleeping on the Fields of Marigold
Is it time to get up? Now you’re breaking up Though I know we are tough I thought we’d lose control And end up in the freezing cold
Goodbye, I’m blowing a kiss to you So long, wonderful being you Goodnight, we’ll soon be sleeping on the Fields of Marigold |

never been too keen on that song to be honest, liking it more than I did at first, but still quite hard to get into...

First I must say I love this "song of the day" thing. Great idea, song_oracle.
Fields Of Marigold is one of my fave songs from DW (along with His Kingly Cave & San Antonio). I know a lot of people don't really like it, but I do. It reminds me a lot of Bowie's All The Young Dudes and I love Bowie.

I know it was along time ago, but I think this was the first song voted off of DW. I still don't know why. This is the number 2 song on the album right behind Heloise.

One of the best chorus of all time. Period. (and way better than Manitoba's chorus IMO) |

A great closer to a live show, the whole crowd chanting: "Good-byyyyye / I'm blowin' a kiss to you".

don't like it, period.
I love the 'is it time to get up'-part and the chorus is cheesy but strong would do great live I think But I don't like the guitar on this track Could easily be my dislike of the production I guess that a nice nick vincent production would do this track justice

I absolutely love the intro to this song and as was said before that chorus is very strong.

I like the song and it IS great live. I can see some people not digging it as it is a bit of a departure.
I love the line "hey how about a drum roll..." |

My thoughts:
-Seems like 1/3 of the song is that riff of sliding up the neck a flat 5th, a major 3rd, and another flat fifth. -the drowned acoustic piano plays sporadically with a nice little run every now and then. -when frank sings the lyric "up", his voice ascends. -when frank sings "now I'm getting numb", his voice descends as if numb. -the suspension and tension in voice during the drum roll. -a chorus that sticks after a few listens. -the theme of his death and a loved one, is my guess. He's referring to the Mexican Day of the Dead, or Dia de los Muertos, where nearly everyone decorates the altars or graves with Marigold flowers to show the departed the way home. It’s celebrated over the first two days of November.

Yes. After I dissect a song, I end up liking it.
I once thought Frank Black didn't give much thought into his songs, until I started writing songs myself.
