In response to a mention of this band in another thread, and cos of Swimmers whinging about inane posting, hows this for a music-related, intelligent discussion.
I think the Saints are the greatest first wave punk band ever. They released a single before any of the UK punk bands despite coming from the backwoods of Sydney, Australia. Their sound was just completely full on, from Ed Kuepper's huge swathes of guitar to the singer's (sorry, I forget his name!) nihilistic howls.
I'm Stranded Demolition Girl Untitled River Deep, Mountain High Kissing Cousins Wild About You This Perfect Day (especially)
Everyone a classic, which I suggest you listen to immediately.
You may have other opinions as to the greatest punk band, which I'd be interested to hear, praps a vote. The Damned were cool, Misfits and Dead Kennedy's also, Clash obviously...
I know who I missed... Plastic Bertrand. Rock On.

VIVA LA SAINTS....so disgustingly overlooked.
True cynics are nothing more than dissapointed idealists. |

no need for a new thread the best punk band were the ramones followed by the dead kennedys with the adolescents or the descendents in the third position.
the saints are good though and terribly underestimated.i like ed kueper's solo stuff too.

Maybe they're overlooked because they never fit neatly into any genre. They were punk but they weren't really punk because they were doing it before punk. They dressed like normal guys and didn't spout any political slogans. To me, their 'coolness' doesn't seem to age at all.
FWIW, my fave Saints songs... Nights in Venice (that guitar riff makes the Sex Pistols sound like Boston) One Way Street Erotic Neurotic No, Your Product (still probably the most pissed-off song I've ever heard) This Perfect Day Swing for the Crime

I'd have to say This Perfect Day. I saw it on Top Of The Pops 2 and it was just awesome. The third verse where the guitar is just howling while the singer almost spits out his words... stunning.

I'd love to get my hands on the video of that!
I saw the Saints in the mid-80s but they were the lacklustre Chris Bailey version. No Ed=no fun. |
