Hello all,

just wanted to say Gday from Melbourne Australia. I am a huge huge Frank Black fan.... 10 years ago I first heard the pixies song "here comes your man on a tape a friend made me in high school and the rest is history....

Anyhow rather than preach to the choir re Frank is God I wanna quickly mention other artists that Im passionate about: Jello Biafra, Kurt Cobain, Neil Finn, Polly Harvey and of course Kim Deal. Hope someone out there is ammused!

Anyhow you people in the US can count yourselves lucky.... I think Im gonna have to jet over there soon in order to see Frank Black live. If anyone out there meets up with him tell him to get his ass to Melbourne Australia... (sure our dollars worth about .55US but i can dream cant I?).

Seriously though, Im quite proud of my collection of Frank records. I even have the Blue Black Sessions - Live in Paris CD and also Oddballs but can someone explain to me what exactly is the Sunday Sunny Mill Valley Groove CD and where I can get my hands on it as Frank Black gets virtually no publicity down under.

Lastly - I hope the latest CD's are growing on everybody out there. It took a good 12 months before i really got into Dog in the Sand.... I love the new stuff

Frank: You rock - but please come to Australia one day (humor me!)

take care everyone

Leigh

I'm in Melbourne as well. I've got a copy of SSMVGD I could give you. I guess mail me if you're interested. What part of town do you live in?

Sunday Sunny Mill Valley Groove Day
- Unreleased album recorded between Pistolero and Dog in the Sand.

1. Constant Sorrow Man (Cover - Traditional?), 2. Pan American Highway, 3. Sunday Sunny Mill Valley Groove Day (Doug Sahm), 4. Humbodt County Massacre (New Version), 5. Angst, 6. Sleep (Donavon), 7. Sister Isabelle (Del Shannon - New Version), 8. Le Cigare Volant, 9. I Will Run After You, 10. His Kingly Cave.

Tracks 1, 2, 5, 6 were released as b-sides to dog in the sand singles
Tracks 4, 7 are previously released covers re-worked
Tracks 9, 10 were later redone for BLD
Tracks 3, 8 are still officially unreleased to my knowledge.

Isn't 'Constant Sorrow Man' an FB original?

i think it was decided a while ago on AP that constant sorrow man is a traditional and a lot of people have their own version of it that is different to some extent. ive never heard another version but i know there are other songs called constant sorrow man by other people cause i found them when looking for lyrics to it, and the lyrics were pretty close.

I got the impression its some old traditional song which artists make their own interpretation of. A similar sounding song with that same line "I'm a man of constant sorrow" was in the 'Oh Brother Where Art Thou' movie with George Clooney in it. And i think Bob Dylan has done an interpretation of it as well.
So probably most of the song is Frank's own work just the concept behind it isn't.

it's sort of both.. but technically it's an original.. Frank wrote the lyrics and the music, and in the sleeve it says "written by Frank Black".. so there you go..

Yeah, and I'm a lesbian. Man, one thing about SSMVGD is the production is like a cross between that of Come On Pilgrim and Surfer Rosa. It's almost eerie on "Constant Sorrow Man" how dead on Come On Pilgrim it is, even down to the vocals.

"The Flying Cigar" (is that a kind of correct translation of the title?) from SSMVGD did make it as a bonus track on DitS I believe, but as a solo acoustic performance, like for the Japanese pressing maybe?

Also, I love Oz. My mammy abided there for a while, but in NSW. She lived in a castle (literally) in some Sydney 'burb. Alls I'm saying is it took western USA long enough to adopt a few roundabouts on the roads. C'mon infra-dum-dums!

So one petty hang up I have is that people mispronounce "Aussie" in the USA, almost without exception. I mean, assuming it was coined by an Aussie, at least. Like Black Sabbath's former from man might be spelled Aussie Aussborne. Get it?
