Music Documentary: Pixies Gouge australia
Friday, November 28 at 10.00pm sbs australia
One of the most acclaimed acts in the independent music scene, Boston indy-rock band, The Pixies are the subject of director Matt Quinn’s 50-minute music documentary, The Pixies-Gouge screening on SBS TV on Friday, November 28 at 10.00pm.
At their peak, The Pixies were easily the most innovative and important band of the late eighties and many claim their substantial influence extends to Nirvana and Radiohead. With music that combined surf, punk and rock with blistering guitar work and a unique approach to song-writing The Pixies blew a breath of fresh air through the independent and national charts in the late 80’s and 90’s. This documentary is a comprehensive, chronological look at the band through interviews with former singer Charles Thompson, guitarist Joey Santiago and drummer David Lovering.
Thompson and Santiago talk freely about their artistic influences and musical development. Thompson’s lyrics, which encompassed sexual and violent details with stories about murder, rape, war pillaging and incest, are also discussed. Music identities like David Bowie, PJ Harvey, Bono and Radiohead’s Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood analyse the highly influential effect of the band and how The Pixies heralded a new sound for the 90’s. Music journalists compare the albums from demo tape to the final stages and chart the band’s career in the different music scenes of the USA and Britain. This documentary also features concert footage of eight of The Pixie’s classics including: Surfa Rosa, Hey, Gigantic, Something Against You and Where is my Mind?

This is the 2nd time its appeared on tv in the lucky country, which is probably fair enough considering Frank hasn't been here for ten years.

Speaking of Australia and The Pixies, did anyone catch The Strokes guest programming Rage a couple of weeks ago? They played 2 Frank Black Clips (Los Angeles and Hang On To Your Ego) and a Pixies (Monkey Gone to Heaven), alongside a range of other very good clips.

And while I'm at it, I should point out that Skulker (Aussie chick rock band) are programming The Breeders (Huffer) and The Amps (Tipp City), along with a bunch of other good artists (Sonic Youth, PJ Harvey, The Clash, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, White Stripes, Beatles, Beach Boys, Radiohead, Iggy Pop, Weezer etc) on Rage tomorrow night (Saturday 29th).
The Breeders and Amps clips will be on just before 3am.

Oh no, not Australian Pixies forums, just Australian music forums in general, annoying the hell out of people who probably don't even know who The Pixies are etc.
An Australian Pixies forum would be pretty cool....though it would be hard to compete with the quality of this one.
