their top 10 is as follows, hardly suprising, or imaginative, pretty much the same list all the middle of the road mags come up with, in a slightly different order... Not that I'm saying it's all wrong, just that at my age, it's hard to tell if some of the below are just overrated, or something...
1. Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, The Beatles 2. Pet Sounds, The Beach Boys 3. Revolver, The Beatles 4. Highway 61 Revisited, Bob Dylan 5. Rubber Soul, The Beatles 6. What's Going On, Marvin Gaye 7. Exile on Main Street, The Rolling Stones 8. London Calling, The Clash 9. Blonde on Blonde, Bob Dylan 10. The Beatles ("The White Album"), The Beatles

I really don't think that the Beatles are responsible for 4 of the top ten albums of all times... |

Yes - i wouldn't have commented if i didn't own all four of these albums. They're great but they're hogging space that is due to other people in my opinion (Bowie's 'Low' for example). |

Calm down, I was only joshing. Low should be up there though, I don't know what place it got to. The Beatles are the greatest band ever, though, it'd be difficult to dispute this.

Damn straight. I was disappointed with the relatively poor showing of the Stones. If the Beatles can get 4 in the top 10, surely Exile shouldn't be the only Stones? I'd like to see Let It Bleed and Sticky Fingers up there. And Pink Floyd. And so on and so on.

Yeah i agree...though I've always thought that the Beatles' strength was as an 'albums' band whereas the Stones i think of more as a 'singles' band.
I think they were right to put the Clash's 'London Calling' quite high up.

Good call on London Calling. You'd think of the Stones as a singles band for sure, but listen to their albums: superb, especially the Mick Taylor-era ones.

How many bands were playing, back then? Pretty easy to get noticed. If you look like from the 70 to now thereīs more people involved playing music.

Oh dear! Are they trying to tell me that ALL of the top ten albums of all time were made in the 60's and 70's??? B*llocks (I don't even know why I hid that first o).
No doubt that the artists mentioned are brilliant artists, amongst the very best ever, but come on let's get real. I think it's time for people to stop being so blinkered, that was like a top ten by numbers, the sort we've all seen many times before. Having said that I have never seen one as bad as that for it's prejudice against more modern bands. All bands from here to eternity should boycott that magazine immediately. It reminds me of MOJO, another old man's music mag.
226 and 315!!! There is just no hope for this world.

I honestly don't think it's possible to come up with a fair top music list. You can have your preference and some things can be undeniably more influencial than others but there's just way too much out there to say "this is in the top 100 and that isn't."

| We'll start seeing albums from the 80's and 90's start popping up in these lists as soon as the dinosaurs who write for Rolling Stone retire and they get some new blood. I'm not disputing the greatness of the albums mentioned, but clearly there is also a nostalgia element in choosing albums made during your childhood that serves as bias. I think the 80's easily produced more great records than the 60's....just a lot more bad ones as well. |

| the lean toward the 60's and 70's is pretty inevitable, if a little unfair. what's very unfair is the absence of the velvets--they always get a token spot in the top 50 or 100 of such lists, but surely they are more important than that. no offense to the clash, but london calling above VU? please. |

I'll refrain from comment until I see the picture that's not working on Scarla's bio. Aargh, just noticed the first name, I can safely say, it'd probably not work out. But, hey Jessie, <Joey voice>how you doing?</Joey voice>

Scarla O' is the name I use for my music
...and it comes from the book 'A Confederacy Of Dunces' when one of the characters pronounces 'Scarlet O'Hara' and it sounds like 'Scarla O'Horror' |

Wierdo's like YOU you mean!!! Stay away from this man Scarla, he's dangerous. He killed at least 7 prostitutes in the East End of London in the autumn of 1888....................oh no that was Jack The Ripper.

Not easy to say in a few words, and you certainly can't justify their reputation by, say, recommending a couple songs. You really have to take the time to listen to all of the major albums in their catalog. Unfortunately, many of the songs have been so overplayed and become so familiar that it's hard to recognize how great they are--that's why you have to get beyond the best of albums and collections, and listen to the entire albums. I agree with Carolynanna on the White Album and Abbey Road, though I don't think Let It Be is a good place to start. I'd also recommend Revolver and Sgt.Pepper for the unitiated. Honestly, if you haven't looked seriously into the Beatles, you're really, really missing out. Don't worry about their reputation, about whether they're over or underrated and just go by your ears.
My own favorite is Magical Mystery Tour, though noone else seems to agree. Sgt Peppers is one of my LEAST favorite--too much goddam Paul in it. I hate that guy. |

I THINK EVEN SOMEONE WHO'S WELL-VERSED WITH THE BEATLES AND DISLIKES THEM WOULD HAVE TO ADMIT THAT THEY DRASTICALLY CHANGED THE FACE OF MUSIC TO COME AFTER THEM, WHICH ALONE MAKES THEM A PRETTY DAMN IMPORTANT BAND

ah! I'm so tired of the Beatles...I used to love the Beatles but the more people tell me how great they are the closer I am to loathing them!
www.pitchforkmedia.com though had the best 100 albums of the 90's and Bossanova, Trompe, and Teenager of the Year were on there...I also think the Breeders were on the list...
