I was just reading through the Pistolero 'epiphany' thread and had a minor epiphany myself. I've always considered Western Star to be FB's best chance at a succesfull single for radio. It's too bad it never happened, but, that song should have been all over radio when it came out.
It led me to wonder what songs am I forgetting when I proclaim Western Star to be the hit single that never was?? That song would have sounded great on the radio and could have inspired a great video as well (countless directions to take it). Which song do you guys consider to be the Hit Single that Never Was?? |

Okay then, I think St. Francis Dam Disaster should have been a hit. It's very long - but it's also so pretty, I think it could have been bigger and better with more airplay. Which is the rub of being Frank, it seems. |

Western Star would have been better than I want R&R, I believe Play it again Sam released that as a radio-promo-single. Bad, bad choice
my hit single would be: San antiono, TX

I think a lot of modern pop sounds like FB 10 years ago -- which means he was(is) ahead of his time, at least in my opinion. What I mean by THAT, is: if "You Ain't Me" were released on certain modern rock stations today and got serious airplay, it would probably do pretty well. So would "Jesus Was Right", let's say, or "Headache". Yeah, I know it was a single back in 94, but I think it would do better today.
Having said that, I really like the chances of "California Bound", "Black Letter Day" (even though it's depressing as hell), and any of the first 4 tracks off of DW. Almost ALL the tracks on SMYT would be a big hit on certain yuppie-rock radio stations (the ones that lean on Dave Matthews, Elvis Costello, Springsteen, et al) and of course St.Francis Dam Disaster. My #1 pick for the 'I coulda been a contender' single ...... San Antonio, TX!! Damn skippy! They (the reviwers) can make all the (Tom)Petty comments they want to, this song kicks serious ass. Boom.

p.s. I have no idea why I threw that boom in there. |

i was really surprised that massif centrale wasn't released as the single for smyt, but then again there are a lot of high quality tunes on this album. from my non hardcore frank friends this is he song they seem to prefer. i'm surprised at many of the singles that have been released. don't get me wrong, they are all great tunes but they don't seem to be his most radio friendly songs. then again frank isn't making music for the radio- thank god. the radio i get here is mainly shat.

I work at Best Buy, and they have "Best Buy Radio" playing with tracks from the latest albums, and Massif Centrale was the track they played off of SMYT. It sure was a pick me up, but I'm kinda glad it doesn't play anymore cause I heard it way too many times!

Yeah, man. I was getting "sick" of it myself. I'd hear it every hour or so and I wanted to hear other Frank Black songs instead of just one.
I mean, it was great when it came on, because I just looked at everyone walking around Best Buy and thought, "If only they knew what they were listening to right now..."

To me San Antonio, I Don't Want to Hurt You, Billy Radcliffe, Horrible Day, Speedy Marie, All My Ghosts, Black Letter Day, and Dog Gone all seem like they should have had Casey Kasem counting them down at some point. But when you look at this week's Billboard hits (1. Baby Boy: Beyonce Featuring Sean Paul 2. Shake Ya Tailfeather: Nelly, P Diddy & Murphy Lee 3. Get Low: Lil Jon & The East Side Boyz Featuring Ying Yang Twins 4. Right Thurr: Chingy 5. Frontin': Pharrell Featuring Jay-Z 6. Damn!: YoungBloodZ Featuring Lil Jon 7. P.I.M.P.: 50 Cent 8. Into You: Fabolous Featuring Tamia/Ashanti 9. Stand Up: Ludacris Featuring Shawnna 10. Where Is The Love?: Black Eyed Peas) it begins to make sense--the kids have got to be able to dance to it at recess! |

It has to be thalaissocracy, the greatest beginning to a song of all time although arguably, in the end, undermined by a below par workman(like) solo/outro, which was why lyle workman was both a blessing and a curse in the early days of frank black's solo career (who's with me!!!) the outro lacks the musical variety/spark of his cult of ray/ Fb + C's stuff. But the song itself was bouncy enough to ignite the tigger in any teenage heart.
I'm just pissin' off off off off!
THat's damn good stuff! |

Actually, I've changed my mind. Again. I think Sir Rockabye could've been a hit, only cos its far more accessible than most of FB's stuff.
It would be a similar situation to Extreme 'More Than Words'...

I'm a northumberland born essex livin' FB fan, cheeseman, but, are you crazy, only in the 50's would sir rockabye have been a hit. THe only other option on 'Teenager of the year' surely has to b 'whatever happened to the pong' because its both catchy and hilarious; the idea of frank hustling all these drunken card sharps at pong is lyrical genius.

everything is new seems obvious -the 'adult' rock station here in chicago XRT would have tons of success with a lot of the catholic's songs. valentine and garuda i could see especially -nadine also seems obvious (those two new ones WERE released as singles...) and one of their dinosaur DJ's admitted in an e-mail that "they should play frank black..." (lin Braimer -the same guy who got cussed out by elvis costello for being the lout on stage who started talking over music that was being played in memorium for a musician who had passed away that week). apparrantly they 'can't' play the catholics stuff for some reason -they can play the same jayhawks, j. hiatt, wilco blasters, xtc, jcmellencamp and other like sounds ad nauseum and not but one tune ever (-EVERY time you hear a clash song IT WILL be should i stay or should i go)..oh well ..d..d.don't get me started..

You are right. Western Star is the prime "hit" song. The problem with San Antonio is it is to simple, but is still my no 2 choice for a "hit" song. Los Angeles is not very good but came in the right time.

I think My Favorite Kiss coulda been promoed to country & western stations with some success. Just kidding, sorta, but it does seem that if Frank wanted to pick up extra coins he could write country songs and really offer the genre something new. Of course he might damage his cred with the alterna-crowd. Guess he's still waiting to hear from Austin City Limits. |

I remember "Men In Black" got a little bit of airplay around here, but I think it's just because the local dumbass DJ's in Knoxville thought it was a tie-in with the "Men In Black" movie that came out with Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones. Then when it didn't appear in the movie it stopped playing.

It all depends on what kind of radio station you're talking about...94.3 around here plays all rock, like Linkin Park, Disturbed, etc., but happily FB has some songs that would fit in with this, and almost every other kind of musical genre there is out there...
I'd have to say: Hang On To Your Ego White Noise Maker Men In Black I Need Peace the Swimmer Off of BLD I want to say "End of Miles," because that is a FANTASTIC song, but probably a little bit too twangy for local radio around here...I'll have to go with Jane the Queen of Love... Modern Age Massif Centrale
