I don't know if this one has been done, but it must. Okay, let's all face it. Frank wants to be Neil to a certain extent. I happen to think that's pretty alright cause Neil is so damn great, and may as well be in the coolest living person thread.....Top 5 Neil records....go!

1. On the Beach (underrated, but Revolution Blues wins for this one alone)
2. After the Gold Rush
3. Mirror Ball (although I don't really like em, Pearl Jam make a great freaking back up band for Neil, as long as they keep that sensitive, folk wanna be crooner Vedder dipshit quiet)
4. American stars and bars
5. Zuma

Mirror Ball? is that any good? I always thought it sucked, but I have to admit that I only know one or two songs...

Everbodys knows this is nowhere is the only neil album I really know
and I like it.

Same as Bill, I only know Everybody Knows really well, but its ace. Harvest is good, at least it was before my record player broke!

I was pretty resistant to Mirror Ball when I first encountered it, but after many listens, I love it. There's two or three on it that are in my top favorite Neil tunes, and even though I really don't care for them otherwise, Pearl Jam sounds great behind him. They sound big, and pounding, yet simple, which makes Neil's tunes stand out even more.

To me, his records aren't as consistant as Id like them to be. There's an awful lot of wonderful stuff on all of them, and likewise, a lot of stuff I could do without. I'd go straight to After the Gold Rush if I were you.

hmmm..for me it'd be something like:

1 - Freedom
2 - Live Rust
3 - Trans (ha!)
4 - After the Goldrush
5 - Decade (for sheer content..tough decision otherwise..)

My mate has brought me back Zuma, Freedom and Rust Never Sleeps (not heard them yet though)... for me the best is Harvest, a cracking album from start to finish. Mirror Ball is alright, has some great songs but also a few crap ones. I also like Are you passionate, but then again I haven't heard most of Neil Youngs stuff so I couldn't really compare it.

Advice for Jose Jones: Don't be put off if you don't like the first Neil Young album you purchase. He's much like Frank in that he often varies dramatically from one album to the next. That said...

My Favorites:
1. Comes A Time
2. After The Gold Rush
3. Everybody Knows THis is Nowhere
4. Freedom
5. that double live album came out with a documentary a few years back "Year of the Horse" I think

In my opinion the first NY purchases should be:
1. Everybody knows this is nowhere (Listen to 'Down by the river','Cowgirl in the sand' and 'Cinnamon girl'!This record is absolutely the first step);
2. After the gold rush;
3. Tonight's the night;
4. On the beach;
5. Zuma;
6. Harvest.
Afterwards, you should have :
-Live rust
-Freedom
-Rust never sleeps
-This note's for you
-Sleeps with angels
-Ragged Glory
-Weld (another good live)
-Greendale (the last one)

See you forever

Yes, 'Decade' could be good, but I think that a more complete knowledge of an artist (especially an important one like NY) could be better achieved by listening to a certain number of his records than by listening to a collection.
Collections can be good, but sometimes they seems to me a little too much cool.

See you forever

thanks, everyone! i'll probably follow elcorazon's list. i'm really excited to get started, yet i'm really poor right now, so it'll be a slow adventure. i'll post all my thoughts on the albums as i get them, and we can discuss why they're so great!
