The greatest song in the history of the world is "Tribute" by Tenacious D. |

I've only heard the songs on "Oranges and Lemons"
I can't get into it. What's the draw of XTC?
Did I choose a crummy album?

You kind of have to dig. There's a lot of their stuff that I don't care for. The two newest records released together (apple venus and wasp star) are incredible however. You also have to have a love of drug era Beatles. |

I FEEL GOOD by James Brown. It has everything you could want! And makes you shake your groove thing! If not that, then a Beatles song... |

I don't think Oranges and Lemons is very good. I'm still partial to what was out when I first heard them. Check out "Drums and Wires" or "Black Sea". |

why would you write a song about lemons AND oranges? clearly lemons are far superior, with their beautiful gleaming yellowness that shines like the sun..
oranges?? how are they worthy of appearing in a song? |

No, Tribute by Tenacious D was not the greatest song, just about the greatest song. And I don't think anything Tenacious D writes or plays could be called great. They've got to be one of the worst live shows I've ever seen. I couldn't wait for them to get off the stage, and they played for over 40 minutes. That was miserable. |

Probably something by The Frogs - you would have to ask them which one though.

INTERLOPER!
I about freaked when I read this post because I heartily agree with you, although I can't stop on just one song, ANother Sattelite is one of those songs that really drilled a hole in my sould and inserted itself a long time ago. I remember one night going to sleep with that song on repeat because I loved it so much.
Do tell, what did you find a[ppealing about it and how did you discover it?
I used to be a total XTC head. Seriously bootlegs and all.
You should check out the song. Yacht Dance on English Settlement. Another one that will lodge in your brain.
The best XTC albums are this:
Skylarking Oranges and Lemons English Settlement Black Sea

My boss is a huge XTC fan and has turned me on to all manner of their stuff. I hadn't heard Skylarking until yesterday. The song totally kills me. What I like about it is quite simply the chord change and the melody that goes with it. It's so different. It's the perfect amount of creepy, and the perfect amount of moody. That's the only way I know how to describe it. The chord modulation is just plain incredible. It's very unusual, but not so unusual that you can't follow it. There's a Stereolab song that this reminds me of. I think it's called Flower Called Nowhere or something like that. It's on that dots and loops record. The XTC song itself makes me melt on the content alone, however, the drum machine and what sounds like midi controlled guitar sample that outlines the progression, is an amazing touch. Simply incredible. One of the tastiest things Ive ever heard, and easily my favorite XTC tune ever. As far as their LP's, I don't care much for Oranges and Lemons, and Ive never heard Black Sea, or the Settlement one. Nonsuch is pretty good, I love the two newest ones, and I find Big Express pretty downright boring. I doubt I will find anything half as captivating as another sattelite. |

Red House is a great track. Greatest in the world? I don't know, I'm a little more partial to Little Wing. HOWEVER, you have to hear this 6:44 minute extended instrumental of Little Wing...I found it on Kazaa. HOLY SHIT. It confirms Hendrix is God. It would crush me if I discovered this isn't Hendrix, but I'm 99% positive it is...cause it definitely sounds like the Experience. Oh my god, it's perfection. It has 50 times the soul of Red House. Check it out if you dig Hendrix or just want to hear what the most heart-filled music sounds like.

What's "They Might Be Giants Radio?"
This is a pretty unrealistic thread, because people are just posting whatever song pops into their head. I honestly don't think I could say a "greatest song in the history of the world..." There's just too many. But, a damn fine collection of songs is Morphine's "Cure for Pain" and "Yes."

I could possibly narrow it down to five, maybe, but the list might change later as I thought of other music.
Rush - Limelight Led Zepplin - No Quarter Frank Black - End of Miles Smashing Pumpkins - Suffer Echoes - Pink Floyd

Whoa! My head just exploded. I can't believe I just saw "Suffer" by Smashing Pumpkins on a greatest songs ever list. Why am I surprised? Well, while Smashing Pumpkins are an extremely well-known band, that seems like a fairly unknown song. I have never heard anyone mention that song, and I'm a big Pumpkins fan (or was at one time) and loved to discuss their music. Also, it never stuck out to me as being a particularly amazing song. Hell, I can't even remember how it goes. Is is the song that begins with the bass walking up until that chord rings out? Maybe that is Crush. I suppose I could go grab the CD. But not now. However, I will have to listen to the song again. I recently listened to a little of Gish, but it's been a long time since I listened attentively to that record. For me, the Pumpkins were at their best on songs like Mayonaise, To Forgive, Stand Inside Your Love (surprisingly, since I never cared much for Machina, but that song is great), Beautiful, Cherub Rock, hell, I can't name favorites, there's plenty of great songs in their repetoire. |

Also, here's some songs that I consider to be truly amazing songs.
Wilco - Jesus, Etc. (even though parts of it are extremely similar to that 70s song "Whenever you want me, I'll be there, I'll be around", which is a cool song) Frank Black - White Noise Maker, Valentine and Garuda Guided by Voices - Awful Bliss Liz Phair - Fuck and Run The Rentals - Please Let That Be You The Beatles - Happiness is a Warm Gun Radiohead - Paranoid Android Weezer - Say It Ain't So, I Just Threw Out the Love of My Dreams Smashing Pumpkins - Mayonaise Dr. Dre and Snoop - Li'l Ghetto Boy Pavement - Grounded, Major Leagues, Gold Soundz
There's plenty more, but those are just some great songs that I can think of right now. |

The Queens of the Stone Age wrote an incredible, f***ing amazing song called "I Think I Lost My Headache". I wouldn't say it's the better song in History, but since I heard it for the first time - 3 months ago or so - I simply can't get it out of my head. It's almost worrying... |

You guys missed it. I was saying that the greatest song in the world had already been established as "Another Sattelite" by XTC. There really was no room in my hasty absolution for anyone else's opinion.
Yeah, of course I'm joking. |

The 6+ minute studio version of Little Wing you are referring to is the one off of the latest Jimi 4 cd box set, so it's from an official release. The live version from "In The West" is from the Royal Albert Hall, 2/24/69. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
