So we know that Frank Black had majored in Anthropology back in college......what i wonder however, is to what extent has his training in this discipline contributed to his music-making? we all know that there are numerous anthropological references in his songs over the years, but, is it at all possible that the sometimes abstract thinking that is necessary in the field of anthropology has been absorbed in his creation of songs? Is Anthropology partly responsible for one of the best songwriters around? |

I never really understood Anthropology, so I couldn't really comment, but what do you reckon to his inclusion of his archeology? Dig For Fire, obviously, but anything else?

Hey Realmotors...you have me kind of nervous now!...do you teach at U-Mass Amherst?
Tough Guise was a video by my professor Sut Jally. He is a cult figure up here...kind of like a politically correct Hitler. Just talking about him might risk my life.. |

I just asked my teacher (btw, I go to MCLA in North Adams) about the docu. She also teaches at Amherst and she said Sut Jally is the only man she would marry if he were to ask her. Can't be entirely Hilter-y. She said he was an awfully sweet guy.

HAHA! See, that's what everyone up here thinks. The same woman would have said the same thing about Hitler in Germany 1939.....if suddenly I stop posting here, then you know why... |

(by that I mean, she would be under the extreme impression through propaganda and Hitler Youth that Hitler was actually a very nice sweet guy and not in fact an evil genius). |

HAHA, maybe I'll just let her know that a kid named Andy said that about him. She'll tell him and then we suddenly won't here from you anymore. Seems I have something on you! HAHA. Oh, don't bother deleting you post or changing your profile, I've already saved and printed them both.

Oh no! I'm finished, curtains for me. By the way, Realmotors, you can look forward to another cleverly titled (Sut loves them clever titles) documentary on college drinking entitled "Sex, Lies, and Alcohol" which he's uh...seducing supple undergrads to try out for right now. You can listen to his lectures online if you want, they're pretty hmmm..persuasive, you'll be a convert in no time I'm sure. Whenever there is an inexplicable 5 minute pause it's because someone in the back row sneezed and Sut had to glare at them for awhile and signal some henchman to take care of the problem. Just go to sutjhally.com You can also see what a happy looking man he is by his photo. |

I heard Mr Black say in a recent interview that he never finished his anthropology studies. He referred to himself as a ´bad anthropologist´ Listen to the interview at www.kexp.org In the song Steak and Sabre (FBATC) Mr Black refers to ´Trobrianders´ and this could be an anthropology related thing. You see the anthropologist Bronislaw Malinowski did a study on the culture on the islands of Kiriwina also known as the Trobrianders. I read about the Trobriandi culture when I studied sociology - check out Malinowski´s work it´s very interesting. |

I'm in two Sut classes, I have him 4 hours in a row twice a week.
Sut pros: Very good speaker, good voice. Very left wing politics (which I agree with generally), very anti-racist, anti-misogyny type stuff.
Sut cons: Secretely evil. Contempt for students. Extremely pretentious. Lies a lot more than a man in his positition should, because everything he says is eagerly lapped up by Jhally Youth. He's the type of guy who tells a joke then acts like you're a moron for laughing at it (he does this a lot, then glares at the students when they laugh as if to say "this is serious stuff, not a laughing matter"). He doesn't like it when students raise hands and ask questions, he treats it as a burden and is incapable of admitting he's wrong in any one way shape or form. He also is liable to stop the 200 person lecture if someone has to get up and go to the bathroom, chastizing them and saying "this isn't highschool" (even though in highschool such things were permitted while they're okay in college). |

Wow, that's bullshit. I mean he seems like a smart gut but what an ass, to make someone feel stupid for laughing! GD self-righteous teachers! I have a lot of contempt for a good many teachers.

You should watch a movie called Once Were Warriors (it has alot to do with the Maori tribe so I guess I'm kind of on topic). That's one of the harshest films they ever made us watch in school. |

Hey kids, been there, done that, college, grad school, the whole works. This Sut guy sounds like every other self-absorbed, self-important intellectual blowhard I had the displeasure of knowing throughout my academic career. While clowns like this get their kicks intimidating students, the real intellectuals and creators are out in the real world making a difference. The power he exercises by abusing students is just an indication of what a little man he is and, despite his intellectual credentials, how really stupid he chooses to be. But idiots like this litter every campus in the country and beyond. Something about the cocoon of the college environment and the lack of personal accountability amongst self-annointed intellectuals breeds this lower form of life. Don't let him get you down. Get what you can from him and wave a hardy adios as you walk out the door. Aside : With one really obnoxious professor in college, I made it a point to sit in the middle of the lecture hall and half-way through one of his lectures, I got up, waved a big goodbye and told the man he just wasn't worth my time anymore. He was, for the first time in his life [I think], speechless.

they actually let you watch 'once they were warriors' in school...man...how about a few less american wars and a little more american education money. go canada, i guess. good film. (btw, lets not start a political conversation..that comment was off the cuff, though i support it)
if you really want to see a shocker...look hard for a documentary called "Trinkets and Beads" (cristopher walker) about modern oil trade in equador where old standards of scam are applied to the modern land rights grab in the amazon and other parts of the world. it will seriously turn your stomach...unless you're a self-centered bastard, that is. heh...
