I did not really mean that.

I enjoy the new record a lot, and consider it to be one of the best recent cd releases.

But I do believe, personally, that Frank Black is taking a wrong turn here. Show Me Your Tears, together with Devil's Workshop, obviously lacks the fine-tuned sensuality and the craftman's attention for sound, or "painting with sound" if you like, that the Catholics gave their best of on Dog In The Sand and which were present on Black Letter Days as well.

The songs on SMYT are all genius in structure, and the instruments (including Mr. Black's voice) sound really good. Although 'My Favorite Kiss', 'New House Of The Pope' and 'This Old Heartache' come very close, I miss the accuracy, the craftmanship, the caressing nature that made Dog In The Sand one of the greatest pieces of music in history of mankind.

What's your view?

I know what you mean. They are both ripping albums but I feel that DITS and BLD are going to gather greater resonance as time passes. The difference is subtle but if you are reffering to the craft of songwriting I agree. Often when I am introducing someone to Frank's music I find it easier to start out with DW or TOTY. This is because I feel the layers are more transparent. The depth and width of the songwriting on BLD or DITS is probably lost on a rookie.

Once the subjet has been christened I usualy strap them to a large table and brand them with my Cult of Ray iron. Once the subject is released they usually have trouble mixing with non cult of ray initiates but they are always grateful for the new family they have.

I think SMYT has the best and more complete songs for years. As a record is much better than DW and BLD and, of course, "pistolero".

I agree with you that something in the final sound fails to me, but even with that, I am enjoying this record as I haven't in years

Dear comrad JoobJoobbird, you are an example to all missionaries.

In her mirror, I disagree on the "complete" character of SMYT. If you listen to DITS, you notice that every sound, whatever its importance for the big picture may be, is carefully considered. This is what I mean by craftmanship. The band is taking good care of the songs, all the way to the most minor details. This is what makes DITS a far more "complete" record for me.

The recording quality of DITS is just excellent ! I always wonder how they recorded songs like The Swimmer or Llano del Rio live to 2-Track. It's brilliant

Dear Doryphore,

You may be right when you say that there is less "craftmanship" in SMYT then in DITS. And the recording quality of DITS is indeed excellent. A song like Llano del Rio sounds incredible, really. Though I never listen to it. Why?

I don't think that "craftmanship" is really what I am looking for in a record of our dear FB. When I want to pay attention to details, I listen to Beethoven. What really strikes me in FB's music is its incredible intelligence, originality and creativity, the way FB expresses his ideas without ever saying them clearly (which has been true with the Pixies as well, and in every interview FB gives, he never says what you expect to hear). FB is a little bit like Bobby Fisher, or another chess player : you must not consider his moves as what they obviously are, because he thinks two steps beyond.

And I think that the associations of ideas are much stronger in SMYT. Perhaps the obvious "craftmanship" is less sophisticated, but the hidden craftmanship (in the lyrics, or just the way he pronounces some words) has never been so fine since TOTY.

This is only a personal opinion, but though I think St Francis Dam Disaster is one of the best pieces of craftmanship I have ever heard, a song like Massif Centrale is more representative of the FB universe, just because of the way he pronounces "don't run away".

I have to agree with you in many respects, adnan. The great thing about FB's songs is that they don't need to be too complicated, they can express all the emotion and meaning in a simple - compared to much of today's 'good' music - way. That said, I would again agree that these tracks have a hidden depth and craftmanship that becomes apparent with repeated listenings.

However, its all good.

It doesn't do much for me and is now collecting dust, but I loved DW & BLD.

I agree with adnan. I'm always saying how great a record DITS is, but truth be known, I hardly ever listen to it. SMYT, on the other hand, as well as DW I listen to on a regular basis, and I have to disagree with anyone who says the craftsmanship on SMYT isn't as good as DITS. I think SMYT has the most intricate, complex, and perfectly crafted instrumentation of any Frank Black record, and at the same time it has all the originality and creativity that you expect from Mr. Black. The recording quality of course is not nearly as perfect as DITS, but that's really not one of my major concerns when I'm listening to one of Frank's records
