"It's a game of two halves"
One good one:
"He couldn't hit a cow's arse with a banjo"
What's worse than football cliches is those comments on the obvious. Honest to god, I heard Madden once say: "Well, the team that scores the most goals is going to win this football game." I called to my husband in my dumbest dumb blonde voice, "Hey honey, listen to this -- John Madden says that the team that scores the most goals is going to win today -- has it ever happened that the team that scored the most goals lost? How fascinating!"

True, Dave has been known for his piratey nature and hence his residence on the piratey coast.
As for why "eh" is pronounced as a hard a as in play and not a soft e as in fed, I don't know. I suppose it's the shortened version of 'eigh' but I certainly wasn't consulted when the term was officially put in the books. Damned governments. I never really thought about it, actually, till you pointed that out Ramona. Sometimes I read it, and it's a soft 'e' (generally when not phrased as a question or said questioningly), and as a hard 'a' the rest of the time.
Sweet Maria, they need to teach these things in the schools. :)

Okay, here's the final word: to Canadians, "eh" is just innately interpreted as a hard a. The rest of the world isn't cool or smart enough to get it. Nothing to feel bad about; you can't control where you're born.

So, how do Canadians pronounce "eh" when it's meant to be interpreted as a verbal shrug? Still a hard a?

Come on now, that's verbal language. It's not spelled any way at all, especially not the sacred "eh."

Ramona - "Eh" is Canadian, though it is pronounced as you've spelled it.
Carolyn - I hate to see American spellings of words cropping up more and more frequently, but since we use American software with American spell checks, things like honour become honor and colour become color and cheque become check. The most frustrating Americanism for me is their insistence at mispronouncing "buoy". The word is derivative from buoyancy/buoyant, and somehow most Americans seem to know how to pronounce that one, yet fail at the smaller version. Boo-ee? What the hell are you talking about?! I heard a Canadian say it the other day and wanted to smack him, though I have no idea why such a trivial and stupid thing pisses me off so much. I suppose it's a pet peeve, and this is our thread for being anal about really trivial language-type anomalies, though, so...
It does drive me up the wall to see someone use its instead of it's or vice versa. Or to use an apostrophe for pluralization. Or no apostrophe for possession. Or dropping of words like "are", mostly done by those who find something endearing about talking 'street'. Eg. "You gettin' fat, girl!"
I'm not immune to colloquialistic pitfalls, but I do try to avoid them. People seem to think that writing with no punctuation, cringe-worthy grammar, and so forth are fine on the internet or in emails or other electronic comminications. But many times, the only way you know the person is through these electronic means (how many of you know me personally?), and the long and short of it is that if you don't pay any attention to what/how you're writing, then it will show and you WILL be judged by how you write because there is nothing else to evaluate. When someone sends me an email with easy words misspelled (or even many words mistyped), no capitalization or punctuation, and awful grammar, I am forced to presume that they're perhaps not the most brilliant minds I've interacted with. It doesn't take much or even any effort to write coherently, so why not?
Those are my feelings on the matter - maybe it comes from editing a newspaper, maybe from a crush on an English teacher, whatever, I'm anal and accept it. I don't expect nor deliver perfection, but a little effort goes a long way. That's all.
For the record, I find that members of this forum generally do pretty well compared to what I've seen...
PS I do abuse the ellipsis but thoroughly enjoy doing so. Just try and stop me!

In another random apportioning of blame, I find text messaging to be at fault in this issue. Honestly, whats CUL8R all about? I use predictive typing and thus words spelt correctly in my SMS communication. It doesn't hurt to use correct grammar, speeling and punctuation, does it? Or am I mistaken.

"Very much so". Listen out for this one. Also listen out for Garth Crooks and concentrate on the questions he asks. Some of these are so stupid as to be hilarious.

Aye is Northern or Scottish for yes. As in: "Aye, lad, git soom higgis doon ya!" (traditional Scottish phraseology) or "Aye, Stay ont roads, don't go ont moor." (traditional Yorkshire greeting).

I personally can't stand when people say "U-man" when they mean "human". Say the H people! Also the whole craze of "you know what I'm sayin" kind of goes with this topic as a whole. I have heard kids talking and saying that EVERY OTHER SENTANCE. It's really annoying.
Ahhh, but by that rationale you should pronounce 'herb' with the 'h' and i know that some of you Americans get a good deal of satisfaction from pronouncing it 'erb' |

I say 'erb all the time and saying it give me little if any satisfaction based on phonetics and dialectual differences.
All I care is that it is some good shit. K?

No, then we throw an 'm' in front of it, and it becomes meh. As in metric. :)

Ah, Fubar.
Meh was popularized in The Simpsons:
Lisa: We're the MTV generation - we feel neither highs nor lows. Homer: Really? What's it like? Lisa: Meh.
Clearly they have a Canadian writer on staff.
