Hi, i'm pretty new here and i mainly listen to music on vinyl but i'm finding it hard to find Frank Black (and the catholics), or pixies on vinyl for decent prices. If any of you have any for sell let me knoe and i would also just like to know what all he has put out on vinyl so as not to look for something that dosen't exist.
thanks,
dalton

I believe that everything but Black letter Days and Devil's Workshop is on vinyl.

I don't think Dog In The Sand has been released on vinyl either.

Hi MRSHOW (is it Mr Show, or Mrs How?) www.cookingvinyl.com has SMYT on on vinyl (fer sale). Check out gemm.com . It looks like you can get most of 'em there used or new for cheap, like Teenager for $16.00. If you don't like that, I'd poke around (internet & phone) exclusive vinyl stores for that stuff. I got trompe le monde, FB&Cs, and TOTY on vinyl in some portland, OR stores a year or two ago. Mr. Black was kind enough to sign them in 3-d sharpie marker.

I just sent in $10.00 for it today

And www.gemm.com is a great place to look and they usually have all the pixies albums on ebay, but I hardly ever see any Frank Black lps for sale

Though you'll have to do some searching and ebay-watching, none of Frank Black's vinyl is incredibly rare or expensive. The most expensive thing I've seen is the self-titled album (from 1993) in a special packaging - silk-screened sleeve with an envelope-like opening - which has sold on ebay for around $50-$60. That LP is also available in a standard sleeve and usually sells for $15-$20. It's 4AD so even the non-silkscreened sleeve is still pretty nice.

Vinyl that I'm aware of (some already mentioned):

albums:

s/t LP
Teenager of the Year DBL LP
Black Sessions Live DBL LP
Cult of Ray LP
Frank Black & the Catholics LP
Pistolero LP (still available from Spinart)
Show Me Your Tears LP

singles and EPs

Hang On to Your Ego 12"
Headache 7" (b/w "Headache (NYC Version)")
Headache 10" (with 'Men in Black', 'At the End of the World', and 'Oddballs')
the Peel Session with Teenage Fanclub 12"
The Marsist 7" (b/w "Better Things")
All My Ghosts 7" (b/w "Solid Gold")

There might be a "Men in Black" 7" single. I don't have it and can't remember for sure. And I've never owned the "All My Ghosts" 7", but I've seen it and I think "Solid Gold" was the b-side, but I'm not 100%.

The Hang on to Your Ego 12" is on ebay all the time. I bought the Teenager of the Year double LP off ebay last spring for about $25.

I have the All My Ghosts 7", and the b-sides are Solid Gold and Humboldt County Massacre.
And I don't have them, but I think there are a MIB 7" (w/ Just A Little on side B) and a I Don't Want To Hurt You 7" with You Ain't Me (live) on side B.

sorry to be the amateur here, hope someone can educate me, but why do you want vinyl, it seems so obsolete. Do y'all still have record players or what? i've seen dj's hip hip, house, whatever using vinyl because they want to control the speed, but rock/ indie rock/ whatever we classify frank & the c's by - why vinyl? thanx

You obviously haven't seen the SMYT vinyl. It's beautiful.

We already have discussed a lot about CD vs vinyl. I like vinyl because I like the sound of it, I like taking care of my records, I like watching the record spinning, and finally I buy a lot of techno records that are only released on vinyl. I don't buy many indie vinyls apart from Frank's actually.

Well not to get all technical but there are certain low tones and other tones that can't be digitally reproduced on cds. But it depends on how the album is recorded too. ALL Nirvana records sound better on vinyl. But the newest NOFX record dosen't sound as good as the cd. plus i agree with loving the cover art watching the record, picture discs, etc... i started collecting records at the age of 5 and i still love them.

P.S. some albums still have vinyl ontl bonus tracks, or if you go to shows alot of bands only have 7"s at least around here alot do.

This is quite hard for me to locate. When Cooking Vinyl put this album back in print, they did not reprint it on vinyl. As of now, I have seen it on eBay only once. I have never seen it on gemm or netsounds. Do you have it, Jason, and if so, how?

(Great topic, by the way).

I bought the Cult of Ray LP sometime in '96 I believe. I found it in a local store's import vinyl bin.

Suggestions for finding it.
- Obviously ebay. It's been awhile since I've seen it there but it could show up any time. Make "cult of ray" (under the 'records' category) a saved search and you'll get an e-mail from ebay if it ever shows up.

- OR go to google and simply do a search for "cult of ray LP" and/or "cult of ray vinyl" (with and without quotation marks, ) and maybe you'll happen into some record dealer's online catalog listing. I've found a few records that way.

And Show Me Your Tears is on black vinyl. I think the only color vinyl in Frank Black history (aside from bootlegs) is a limited edition release of Bossanova on red wax.

I pretty much only buy $1 or less records, cause I have a shitty phono preamp that runs into my shitty "boom box". I end up with a lot of pipe organ records. OH, and Caroliner. I gotta get their new 2xlp. Send me money so I can buy it.

Saw Show Me Your Tears LP in a store today...beautiful, slightly different layout/typography, but $26.00!!! Ouch, no thanks. How many people find themselves buying albums twice. I can think of a few occasions where I've done so:
Bought a crappy cut-out of Neil Young's Time Fades Away on ebay, years later found a pristine copy for $7, gave the first to a friend who just got a turntable...
Got the then-new Guided by Voices album on LP signed by the band, found that the pressing was slightly too fast, bought the CD, now the LP is framed on my wall
Bought a crappy, warped copy of Big Black's Atomizer for $1, later found a mint first pressing for $7, gave it to a friend who didn't like it.

I actually have no Frank Black on vinyl whatsoever. Given that he's alternately my first and second favorite artist of all time, this is consistently surprising to me.

actually, the dynamic range of a CD is miles wider than vinyl.
The difference lies in the analogue to digital conversion process, depending on the bit depth, etc, of the AD convertor.
The thing is, with the Catholics albums being recorded in such an analogue fashion, there is no conversion necessary to vinyl, thus, arguably, the sound is 'truer'.

I find it hard to believe that the differences are so great that they warrant wasting even more money to buy an album a second time. Unless you're a mega fan and honestly believe you can pick up the sound differences it can't be worth it. I have a turntable for old records and albums never released on cd. I'm a fan of the cover art but that's not worth something like $26.

I'm sure there are some records out there with outstanding differences but most of the time it's just that people are being snobby audiophiles; then again I'm hard of hearing so perhaps I don't know what the fuck I'm talking about. I'm thinking about getting that 10 dollar Pistolero just so I can wear it down and get that pop and whir. I'd love to do the same with SMYT and DiTS. The benefit in vinyl for me is the charm of a well loved disc.

The cool thing about vinyl is that everybody buys CD's now. Therefore, you can pick up old records dirt cheap. If you rummage around in charity shops you can get all sorts of bargains.
For example, I recently found an old Rough Trade 'Indie Top 20' record from 1991, feat. Carter USM, Charlatans, Teenage Fan Club, Pale Saints Front 242 and... a cool remix of Dig For Fire. Which was nice.

A few years ago I sold something like 2,000 CDs on ebay because I was in need of fast cash. I knocked my entire, wall-covering CD collection down to about 50 carefully chosen discs.

Of those 2,000 CDs, there were only a few hundred I was interested in buying again after I got out of my financial hole and when I did start repurchasing them I went for vinyl not only because I like vinyl a lot, but also it was like buying something different rather than paying twice for the same old CD I had before. So I've done a lot of CD-to-vinyl repurchasing.

My last repurchase was, I think, XTC's Dukes of Stratosphear records (the CD of which was sold off in the big ebay purge of 2000). I lucked into them in a used bookstore for $6 each. The vinyl LP and 12" EP have different (and nicer) cover art than the combo CD. The album is even on cool psychedelic purple vinyl.

Got the Frank Black Live in Paris on vinyl, Kitchen Tapes are soo brillant on vinyl, I was abit pissed off when I first saw it in CD form, cause I thought you could only get it on vinyl(?), but now I love owning it. It's the only piece of vinyl I own apart from the Breeders Head to Toe EP.

Ah, I got black sessions and kitchen tapes a few weeks ago but I still haven't listened to it because I am in desperate need of a new needle for my turntable and I don't want to mess the record up.

Does the Black Sessions vinyl have the hidden solo-acoustic "I Want to Live on an Abstract Plain" at the end?

It does indeed! and really nice it is! It's worth getting for Frank talking in Joey's kitchen about the Cigar take, and an amazing raw version of Modern Age(In my opinion, better then the DW version).

The weird thing is that as pro-vinyl as I am, I actually have no Pixies/Frank Black vinyl whatsoever. I do have the Breeders 'Head to Toe' 10" and the fanclub 'Forced to Drive b/w Climbing the Sun' 7" (signed by Kim), but that's as close as it gets. The thing is that if a new release is available in both formats I'll always tend to favor vinyl, but FB releases don't tend to show up in stores on LP readlily, and when a new FB album comes out my main priority will just be to GET IT as soon as possible, so that precludes vinyl in every case to date.

I also own a few vinyls of FB (among them, the first Frank Black album which is beautiful).

Believe or not but I have never played these records... until now I have just purchased them because they are beautiful to look at !
