I'm in a state of undecisiveness right now when it comes to my signature. So for the past couple of days, I just haven't used one. I suppose I'm giving it too much thought. |

Sorry, you were talking about looking for poems about man vs. nature/animals and it was late and I was feeling pretty kooky...I was rambling on about the Samuel Taylor Coleridge poem "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" (if you're still lookin fer poems: http://etext.lib.virginia.edu/stc/Coleridge/poems/Rime_Ancient_Mariner.html)and a really funny bit from Monty Python's Flying Circus.
From "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner":
At length did cross an Albatross, Thorough the fog it came; As if it had been a Christian soul, We hailed it in God's name.
It ate the food it ne'er had eat, And round and round it flew. The ice did split with a thunder-fit; The helmsman steered us through!

Hy apl, for some reason when you quote me I can't see what you wrote yourself. For instance I didn't see your "ouch" until I replied with the ^_^ I though you were just quoting me to smoke me in posts :) though I'm not quoting you here I did click the 'reply with quote' button to see your smiley but what gives? anyone know why I can't see her text?

The weirdness was in response to glacial's question if I'd read the "pananthropic experiment" thread.
And the "smoking" you bit was also in response to glacial saying he's being passed up in posts. I was just kidding.

ah, please to explain it all. Where are you moving? What new job? school?
Again, I should be writing but I seem to have become academically invulnerable. I have a speech tomorrow too but I'll probably just wing it.

Well, me and my wife and the baby are going to move up to Knoxville...made famous by that Simpsons ep where the sun sphere is toppled. I'm probably going to just transfer to one of the many Ruby Tuesday's in K-town, unless my boss at the Oak Ridge store offers me a pretty hefty raise to commute about 25 miles every day. Sara (my wife) wants to get a new job (she's working at Ruby's right now too, as a salad bar attendant) but if she can't find one right off she'll just transfer, too.
I've been going to school about 30 miles away from where I live, and Knoxville lies about 30 miles in the oppostite direction, so I was thinking of transferring schools to save some gas money...Pellissippi State Community College is alot closer to Knoxville than the school I go to now.
All in all I'm very excited about it, because I've been down here for the past thirteen years or so, since I was about 13, and me and Sara are ready to go somewhere where we can just "start fresh" as it were. (We both went to high school here, and have lived here for a long time.)
I don't know where you live, but did you just get there or have you grown up there? I was born here in Oak Ridge, and it really does wonders for your optimism for the future to get out of the same place you were born in...it feels like you're stuck in a rut or something. (I have lived in other places in my life, like Wyoming and Idaho, but it's been forever since I've lived in those places.) I can't wait. I only wish I were moving even farther away, out west somewhere.
Sorry this post was so long. |

Too long? Not long enough! Tell us more more more. plus I need something to help me put off actual work ;)
Good luck with all of your newness; it is an exciting thing and I wish you the best. I was born and raised in Lynn: The City of Sin. Right now I'm at school in the Hills of North Adams, MA which is about 3 hours west of my hometown. I might just move here someday; it's really beautiful here but the winters are harsh. I'm planning to join the Peace Corp. after next semester so that'll be the start of my travels. I guess it would be nice to get that out of my system sos I can settle down with a wifey. North Adams would be a good place for a family. Shoot, there I go - rambling again.

If I had it to do all over again, to get that travelling bug out of my system, I would definitely go the trucker route. My younger brother (21 now, I think, I barely see him anymore!) joined the Marines a couple of years ago. I think he was thinking only of his interest in guns and military equipment and the like, because once he actually got there he hated it.. (he was at Camp Pendleton out in CA. I went to visit him out there once, it was pretty cool, within driving distance of both San Diego and L.A.) He got to the point where he didn't care at all, and eventually got kicked out for testing positive on a drug test! He ended up with a "discharge other than honorable" which would eventually be lessened to a "general discharge." I think he just wanted to go out and see the country, which is a totally understandable and admirable goal, he just didn't want to deal with the discipline and commitment...I'm sure as hell glad he got kicked out before 9/11 happened, though! Forgive my ignorance, but what exactly does the peace corps do? |

yeah, good thing he got out before 9/11.
The Peace Corp. is a program that sends volunteers to areas of need so that they might help improve the people's situation. I've been told that, as an English major, they'll probably want me to teach English abroad but I don't think that really helps people. I mean sure it's useful and all but it doesn't help feed people. I'm thinking of going into the agricultural side of it which helps plan a better diet for people and is concerned with growing and maintaining that diet. To be honest, I don't know all the facets of the Peace Corp. either. I guess I'll find out soon enough though.

realmean, a friend of mine was in the Peace Corps - in Madagascar and parts of Africa. She wanted to stay and travel after her assignment was over, but had to leave because she broke her ankle, and also there was a lot of terrorist activity in the area at the time. Her area of expertise was/is epidemiology (e.g. Tuberculosis, etc.). I haven't gotten to talk to her in ages, but I believe she really loved what she did for them. It was a required 2 (or 3?) yr long program for her at Toulane.

My brother is a Junior at Williams College - is that anywhere near where you are? I'm really confused about the state of MA, if you can't tell! ;)

thanks for the info apl. I believe it's a 2 yr program; I just hope I like it. There wouldn't be anything worse than getting there and hating it for two years.
What's your question about where I live?
