Another day at work, ergo I am bored. This new thread is purely for my own sake to stop me falling asleep and being fired.
Have you ever seen/heard any bands when they were still no-name losers but which then went on to be huge? Quite satisfying, ain't it, especially if you could see the potential.
I saw Feeder in 1999, with Straw in support, and Muse opening. I actually liked Straw better, Muse were sort of poor. They played a Husker Du cover, I think, although I wasn't familiar with it. Little did I realise that Muse would go on to try to take over the world...
Even better, in 2000 I saw The Yo-Yo's and Groop Dogdrill co-headlining at the Wedgewood Rooms in Portsmouth. That was cool, but the moral of the evening was: never have the Hives as your opening band, they'll make you llok lazy and weak. Nobody had heard of them at the time, but the amount of energy they put in to a crummy gig in a scabby venue has yet to be equalled. Howlin' Pelle was leaping around and talking to the audience like the "bastard son of Mick Jagger" (which is what the guitarist told me afterwards). So you can imagine how pleased I was for them when the world and his dog got on the bandwagon soon after, and they became huge, and tried to take over the world...
Anybody else got a good eye for the future heroes? And remember, this is no place to put "I saw the Pixies in Boston in 1986, I'm so cool"!

When I was in High School, the band I was in entered this EMI New College Music contest thingy.
Anyway, after a few rounds, out of 2000 bands nationwide, voted all across the US, we got dpwn to the last 5 bands.
We didn't ultimately win, but neither did....drumroll pease....The Gin Blossoms who were also in the last 5.
I don't even know if anyone remembers them AND U'm not even sure if this is the point of your post but fuck it. It's a good story and the only thing I have left to cling to as my hair turns gray, and youg girls don't even know I exist. |

I really hate Feeder.
I saw a hundred reasons at docklands arena supporting muse, i wasn't impressed but soon after they quite big.
I wish i had seen the pixies in 1986 but i was only 6 at the time and unfortuanatley my mother, not having the forsight to realise the part the pixies would play in my teenage years, would have put her foot down and refused the pay the air fair.

I saw Norah Jones about about 2 months before people started pelting her with money. It was Soooooooooooo boring i wanted to shit my pants. The guy who was her bass player kept making all these really bad bass player faces, and stroked his upright way too much. |

Okay this is really old but the first time GnR came here (virtually unknown) they toured with the Cult (loudest freaking concert I've ever ever gone to btw). People booed the Cult of the stage and totally rocked out when GnR came on. WTF? |

My friend got me into Violent Femmes back in 1986, or 1985?, listened to a lot as I tried to learn how to street skate (board), but that was also the same year that I LOVED "Rock Me Amadeus", heheh. I can't stand them (VF) now - way too overplayed.
I guess I could list a bunch of Louisville, KY bands that kind of went somewhere, like Slint and Rodan, Shipping News, Rachel's, June of 44, Crain, Endpoint, Evergreen, King Kong, Metroschifter, but I don't know if that counts, because none of them went on to huge fame or anything, and I grew up with a lot of those people. You couldn't walk down the street without tripping over a great all ages or 18-over show. |

Ugh, she was opening for Dar Williams (who is kinda poppy & upbeat), and she just sat there mumbling into her mic and all the songs were slow and depressing, and there was nowhere to sit and i already mentioned the bass player and i just wanted it to stop but the club doesn't allow reentry even though there is this great chinese food place next door and the club doesn't even have a pinball machine (all clubs should have pinball machines) and i just wanted norah jones to shut up or drink coffe or take a deep breath and sing LOUD. It was the wrong setting for her to be playing, so now whenever i hear her I automatically remember how much i wanted her to stop. |

Nirvana for me too.. i saw them back in the day, pre-Smells Like Teen Spirit.. saw them open up for Dinosaur Jr. and it was amazing.. as good as DJ was, there was no way they could follow Nirvana (sorry J Mascis).
i actually got kicked out of that show for being an obnoxious young lad. now i'm very mature.

I would appreciate Norah Jones a lot more if she stopped playing the "speak/sing quietly to get attention" card, and also if she wrote her own songs. Isn't she the granddaughter of Ravi Shankar? I would think she would be more, real? Maybe that's a lame expectation, I dunno. --edit--spelling |

Err, I can't think of any on my own, but my mom was in love with Coldplay before they ever hit the airwaves in the US. In fact, she introduced a local radio station to their music and the DJ dug em.

She's his daughter, I think. And, weakly in her defense, many jazz artists don't "write" their own songs.
Except, of course, the bass in Spinal Tap who wrote his jazz improv. |

I saw Nirvana early on as well. They played in a basement bar that was a dive to about ten people. Nevermind was released about ten days later. |

hahaha! Yeah you're right, she's his daughter. I think I saw her play sitar with him once or twice - she's very good at it. I'm not dissing her - I like her voice - but I think she has a lot of room for maturation. I get the feeling they (her producer/managers) put her out there too early just to make a buck. Plenty of jazz musicians wrote their own stuff, back in the good ol days of real jazz - but I guess you've got a point, the jazz singers almost never did. |

I saw muse before they were big, just after their release of showbiz. Uhm seem thing with Queens of the Stoneage, who were indie-big I guess, but not as commercial-big as they are now (over here perhaps).

Yeah, but they also did a lot of traditional tunes (such as Monk doing Tea for Two, Dizzy doing Sunny Side of the Street, ect.). |

Barto, thats nothing to be proud of... Perhaps the backlash hasn't reached you yet, it started about five minutes after Trouble was released over here, and has grown with Parachutes v.1.1, or should i say Rush Of Blood To The Head...
