Unfortunately I went through an Oasis phase with their first album (which was o.k.) but then fortunately they quickly wore off. They are crap!

let's not forget the classic mopy sap band: counting crows. radiohead is worth a listen but radio exposure will wear 'em out. coldplay although seemingly similar is pretty obnoxious. the 'alternative' sound should just be called the 'obnoxious'sound. DEFINITELY any band with numbers in their name sucks. Dave Matthews for me defines absolute obnoxiousness as radio can't figure what to do other than play one of his songs every 10 min. used to like 'em, now i hate 'em: red hot chili peppers -pretentious crap (endless poundings over the radio doesn't help much). that one song with the dramatic strings going into a wall of heavy guitar and then the whiny punk raps a little and starts the scream anthem: 'i will not be ignored'.....they should be jettisoned into the sun to prevent future recording. -disturbed should be curbed. ooh ahahahah. i could go on -if my brain hadn't blocked the names there are probably a number that make me instantly spin the radio dial in a frantic quest for relief.

So I actually listened to the radio today because I forgot to bring my discman in my car, and I listened to this 93.1 New Rock Station (in South Carolina or somewhere).
What I heard while driving:
-Live, "Lightning Crashes" -Guns 'n' Roses -Pearl Jam, "Dissident" -Chevelle
and then, literally 5 minutes after Pearl Jam's song ended, they played that band Temple of the Dog. I was so pissed! I don't need to hear Eddie Vedder twice in one driving.
How are these bands "New Rock"? They are from the 90s (except Chevelle). This station is beyond shitty. In addition to these mediocre 90s bands, they play the crap of today as well: Creed, Nickelback, Staind, etc. It's awful. Awful.

I hate the fact that mainstream music is mostly what my wife listens to. Oh well, to each their own. Not really like I can say much about it to her! =) |

I do like a few mainstream groups, but they are few and far between; hardly anything at all they play on our local shitty radio station, 94.3. |

What is that cover song Eddie Vedder did? The one about 'the last kiss' or some crap? Does anyone know what I am talking about? They used to play it ALL THE TIME about three to four years ago and it was SO ANNOYING. The song sucked, and he sang the whole thing COMPLETELY flat and out of tune. It was horrendous. Crap - I wish I could remember the name...

Yes, that's Last Kiss.
The odd time I'm subjected to the radio lately, I'm going nuts because some emo band (not sure who) did a cover of Boys of Summer, as if the original wasn't bad enough. It's on every twenty fucking minutes while I'm working. Sometimes I wonder if it's the job I hate or the music that goes with it. So whoever that band is gets my vote.

Kings of Leon, their haircuts and t-shirts are too perfect! plus thier music is average (I've seen them live). Mars Volta are excellent live, and make up for thier nonsence lyrics with hyper spastic stage shows! The SugarBabes are underated.

Oh god, the Ataris! Like they grew up playing Atari games. puhleeez! The song sucked big fat donkey b***s before, but somehow they've managed to make it worse. I discovered recently that my sister likes that band. I am horrified, and do not understand how we could be related. I mean, I liked some crappy music before I knew what was out there, like when I was 11, but she's in college now, WTF?!
I sent her Pixies cds for her birthday. I will keep fighting the good fight. |

I give credit where credit is due. Personally, I feel that 95% of the bands mentioned on this topic have earned my respect by creating and putting thier art before the masses. Even if it isnt something that is a delight to my ear, I still respect the artist and the artform.
I would like to just say that artists I find myself listening to alot are:
dirty three silver jews bed head sunny day real estate pedro the lion dinosaur jr. james brown
just to name a few.

Man, right on with Good Charlotte. I hate this whole "oh we're punk rock but we love our moms and we don't drink" wave of bands. I don't think so! Doesn't cut the cheese with me.
Incubus, yeah, all my friends love them. What the hell? They sound awful. |

Most definitely, the Atari's Boys of Summer. Immediate station switch.
I'm not too impressed with the Sum41/Iggy Pop song either. How did they pair up? But on the other hand a group called the Jets doing an Iggy Pop song---sounds pretty good.

I think I'm going to go with Outkast and the Roots too, it's not that I dislike hip hop or anything or that even dislike the artsier side of hip hop because I love Tribe Called Quest and I like De La Soul, I just can't stand these two groups and I can't really peg why I remember a group called Pharcyde that seemed much more talented than Outkast but I don't know what ever happened to them. As far as MCs go though my favorite has to be MC Paul Barman.

I love the Pharcyde!
"Yo mama's got a peg-leg with a kickstand...yo mama, yo mama, yo mama..."
Did you ever hear their collaboration with B.J. Nowell from Sublime of "Summertime?" It was awesome. Very trippy.
I have to say, I do like some of Outkast's music because they seem somewhat intelligent, more than I can say about much of hip-hop music. But, I like their older music like "Atliens" better than what they have out now. There was alot of good material on "Stankonia." |

Live: My god, just because you like to play instrumenst doesnt mean you should share it with the rest of us...
Foo Fighters: Gee, talk about milking Nirvana fame for all its worth
Limp Biscuit (and jock rock in general): Stick to your video games and date-raping.
Alicia keyes and Macy gray: The epitomy of originality....for retarded audiences.
John Mayer: Lame -ass tunes that would make Hall and Oates proud.
Nelly: Where can I get me one of them band-aids?

I agree with the Darkness but I have to add Glassjaw, Poison the Well, Billy Talent, Thrice, Thursday, and Atreyu. I hate Atreyu the most since I had to sit through them live once. I'm just really against this whole "melodic hardcore" thing the worst part is that this is what a lot of younger people label as indie music, I guess because it's just not cool to call bands punk anymore, but I'd have to say indie is a pretty lame genre title too. I've heard these bands called emo, hardcore, melodic hardcore and indie, could they be a little more vague? It's not like they're that original anyway, and they try to be surreal with their lyrics and album covers which just shows how half assed they are in the end. Oh yeah and CKY I fucking HATE CKY.

Props to you for your entire list except for maybe the Foo Fighters. I'm not a huge fan, but I think they've done a good job differentiating themselves from Nirvana, personally. I think they probably would've at least hit mainstream radio play even if Nirvana had never existed.

whatever you do stay away from 'kill hannah' -chicago group been around for ever -they have been lately trying to groom them as the new 'smashing pumpkins' -mainly because of where they come from i suppose as they are way more obnoxious than SP -yea i like some mainstream stuff -i don't think it's healthy to discriminate if it's something you like -wierd thing is i like a lot of SP songs but never bought an album of theres usually mainstream (on the radio)stuff i leave there and enjoy it as i catch the endless assaults on the radio. U2 is another i admit to liking a lot of their stuff but it's practically embarassing to buy an LP. i saw the pumpkins before they got big because everyone said you gotta -and i remember being seriously unimpressed -then again at the time rock was pretty boring and i was looking into people like COLDCUT and 'meat beat manifesto' (great show). anyone out there ever heard of Pussyfoot records, Howie B.'s label -they have a really interesting roster but not prolific as it's been awhile since they had enough to sustain serious shopping -their heyday was great collections. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED: 'Fish Smell Like Cat' -very underrated, unknown and hard to find (a pussyfoot collection)very rewarding if you get one is all i can say.

It seems like there is alot of 80s covers lately and I just can't seem to understand why they picked the songs they picked. Boys of Summer? C'mon now. |

Yeah, "indie" as a genre title makes no sense. I mean, you can be on an independent label without playing emo/melodic hardcore/whatever, so why should "indie" music refer only to that style?

'80's covers DEFINITELY suck -what a joke going back to that '80's sound -the only thing good in the eighties were bands that played instruments that harkened back to no later than the early seventies ie: no cheesy casio bebop. (guitar rock in other words -bands like pink floyd don't really count -they came as pioneers into electronic accompanyment. a bad (really bad example) is that band that did that horrifying huge hit on MTV in the early eighties with the animated video, rotoscoped black and white -'take on me' is the title -anyone remember the band? if someone covers that and makes a hit -it could be a sign the world is headed into cataclysm. and that band live REALLY sucks.
