let's see...
the first one that comes to mind:
DEATHCAB FOR CUTIE
i really can't stand this band.. even though many of my friends, who have great taste in music, seem to love them..
too whiny for me..
it's hard for me to respect a band that i could physically beat up, single-handedly. (allow me to add BRIGHT EYES to that particular list)

Dashboard Condfessional - I just don't get it, I guess, but that guy's on the cover of Spin a couple of times a year. That's the only one I can think of right now... |

Yeah, fucking Radiohead. Oh, and I HATE all that post-rock shit. GYBE, Silver Mount Zion, Tortoise and the like.

Wow, everybody's coming down all hard on the Radiohead - what's with that? I'm interested to know why people HATE the band's music....Personally I think they're great, but it doesn't bother me if you hate em.
As far as bands I hate, you could pretty much just copy/paste the billboard/radio/alt-rock top 100 and you'd be well on your way to a huge list. ;) |

I don't get the appeal of Dave Matthews either. I just find him dreadfully boring. Same deal with John Mayer.
I don't really have any strong feelings toward Radiohead. "Paranoid Android" is a pretty good song. Most of what I've heard didn't really grab my interest, but I didn't really dislike it, either.
I'm not really familiar with Dashboard Confessional or Death Cab for Cutie, but I have somewhat negative feelings toward them just because they're considered so "hip" among the trendy indy kids. For all I know, though, they could be popular for a reason.
As far as musicians who get mentioned here often, I've never really been interested in David Bowie. I don't hate him, though; I just don't care much about him one way or the other.

Thom Yorke is just kind of odd - is that people's issue with Radiohead? He always seems to mumble. I am also not crazy about Coldplay - but that could just be the Gwyneth factor. |

Dave Mathews and Nickelback. NB do nothing for the Canadian music scene. Absolutely nothing constructive anyways!

I never got At The Drive-In. What was that? Do we not already have Fugazi? Mars Volta are pretty good though. Oh, yeah, I can also include pretty much every New York electro-disco-funk-punk band thats out at the moment (Interpol, The Rapture, Yeah Yeah Yeahs etc) and most of the current crop of garage bands - White Stripes I can deal with, but why do we need the Star Spangles? Why?

Oh boy, this is easy, and deceptively fun at the same time. The Strokes, Dashboard Confessional, Interpol, Death Cab for Cutie, I'll go with Dave Matthews, but I can't go along with Radiohead, they're the only band that is that popular worldwide and is actually still worth the money...and besides, I happen to love 70's Pink Floyd..which is exactly what I think they're trying to do, white stripes as well, they make damn good lost led zeppelin songs, but miraculously come across pretty honestly....hmm...Belle and Sebastian, although I own and love a lot of GBV, im pretty sick of hearing them, and it seems as though ol' dude is gonna keep writing the same four songs forever....hmm..you all forgot Stereolab, bands with numbers in their names, bands that try to sound like the MC5, bands that half of which will play an acoustic set at the local coffee shop when they're not crooning their "emo" sentiments, bands with members who don't actually play instruments, but are members nonetheless (ahem...Avail), pretty much just about anything on the Pitchfork site, umm...any band that sounds like either Sonic Youth, or Fugazi (seemingly the most ripped off bands of the genre, generally speaking...actually, you may want to add Superchunk as well), and last but not least...all singer songwriters who have not been dead for over at least ten years or are not neil young. |

Okay, how about this, I really really like Radiohead, but have no idea why everyone else does too. Why the hell did they get so big? I can understand why someone would hate GY!BE and have really cooled on all their side-projects, but I can't understand lumping Tortoise in the same bit, even if you hate them...that's like saying I hate jazz like Gene Krupa and Keith Jarret...

Man, I forgot U2. They aren't horrible, but what really makes me hate them is how they're the supposed to be "greatest band in the world". And, of course, Nickelback, but I'd hardly say they're popular around here these days anyways. There has been a pretty big Albertan backlash lately... The 15 minutes are up for them (I hope). |

Everyone seems to love Dave Matthews band. I used to listen to some of his stuff, and yes, I did like it. They are excellent musicians and I hear they are tight live, but they seem to be overrated. Most of their albums have the same feel to them and you could take about any Dave Matthews song and it could fit on any DMB album because it all has that "Dave Matthews Bandy" sound.
They have some good instrumentation, a few good songs, but they get boring after a while and it pisses me off how many college girls are in love with him and his music. He has no upper lip!

I only hate the bands that don't do it for the music and/or contribute nothing new or even try to. I might not like them, but at least I'll respect them. |

Frank Black and the Catholics.... buuuurrrpp, bullshit I am going crazy.
Oasis, not too sure how popular they are today but back in the mid-late 90's when every wanker in England was coming out with phrases like 'our kid' and 'mad for it' and walking along the street with a fucking stupid Liam Gallagher swagger, that really used to make me sick.
Unfortunately I went through an Oasis phase with their first album (which was o.k.) but then fortunately they quickly wore off. They are crap!

Yeah, you're right Eric. That's why I said I disliked "post-rock", which is to be taken in its largest sense. Your example about jazz is correct, and when people say "oh, I hate techno" and include about every electronic music artist in it, I hate that too, so I understand what you wrote. I just don't get post-rock. It makes no sense to me and everyone I know is going crazy about all these bands from Montreal, it makes me mad.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say one that most people under the age of, say, 12 love. Busted. I. Hate. Busted. Now, you Americans should consider yourself lucky that chances are you haven't been inflicted with this yet, but imagine some random boyband covering MXPX or New Found Glory or the like. That is, production line pop where the band allegedly play guitars while jumping round in sync. Imagine, if you will, Avril Lavigne's faux-punk posturing with all her credibility stripped away (not much of a stretch I know) singing about fancying your teacher and stuff.
I. Kill. Busted. Now... To be shot on sight.
I agree with mdisanto, this is a good chance to vent ones spleen.

U2 are shit and Bono really pisses me off.
Oasis- don't get me started, not only is the music very dull and repetitive but Noel and Liam are so stupid, i know its not their fault and their stupid mother decided to mate with a man who was also stupid but they actually seem to highlighttheir stupidity, instead of hiding it or trying to be less thick.
Radiodhead are a good band but they do piss me off sometimes- just cheer up will you?
The Strokes- hugely overated, the first album was ok if repetitive but their new single is shit. No one seems to realise that they keep releasing the same song over and over.
Bands like Nickelback, Creed Evenessance etc are also shit but most people realise that.

I meant that no one with any taste in music whose opinion you would take serously believes that these bands are good.
Clearly some stupid fucker is buying shit music in large quantities but i try not to concern myself with them.
Having said that i don't concern myself with them is not entirely true as sometimes i do wonder if these people have a brain or if the music just rattles around in their empty heads.
I actually have more comtempt for people who like bad rock music that those who like mariah carey, celine dion and the like because people who like bad rock music should know better. |
