I was reading on the Blacker Than Black topic, people were debating whether or not Hang On To Your Ego was good or not, and some wag went as far as to say it was the worst cover ever, to which a bunch of people responded by telling him off. Fair enough. However, I think there's scope for a topic around this, as someone else suggested Sheryl Crow or G-G-G-Gareth Gates as doing the worst covers ever.
What do you punks think?
I'm going with any Boyzone song, or any nu-metal 80's cover (yes I'm looking at you, Alien Ant Farm)
As for best, I think you'd be hard pushed to top Jonny Cash doing I Won;t Back Down by Tom Petty, although Therapy? doing Isolation (Joy Division) or, yes. In Heaven are up there.
So, over to you: best and worst cover versions?

BTW, the title of the topic is supposed to be read in a Simpson's Comic Book Guy voice (a la "Worst reading ever.")

I didn't realise that Nirvana's 'D7' was a cover. How does it compare to the original?

DEVO's "Satisfaction" is up there with the best of them. If you're gonna name "All Along the Watchtower," then the Hendrix version would have to be the one. Nomeansno did a great version of "Manic Depression."

They also did "Return of the Rat" by the Wipers. I don't think Nirvana did much to improve (or change) the songs, but then I'm a huge Wipers fan. IMO, if you're gonna cover a song you should try to add something more to it-- give it a new twist-- otherwise what's the point?

hey, I got a kitty under my screenname

anyway, clearly, the WORST cover ever was the fine young cannibals doing a grave disservice to the buzzcocks ever fallin in love ... followed closely by rod stewart's version of tom wait's downtown train

Most Camper Van Beethoven covers are really good. They did a few in their early days where they would play a hardcore-type song in a country/folk kind of style with a violin. Two I can remember offhand are Black Flag's "Wasted" and Sonic Youth's "I Love Her All The Time."

I agree that the Pixies' version of "Winterlong" is really cool. I like the Frank/Kim harmonies. As far as covers OF Pixies songs, I enjoy April March's take on "Alec Eiffel."

Oh, and Smash Mouth's cover of "I'm A Believer" is terrible. I was at Pizza Hut once, and some kids kept playing it over and over again on the jukebox. It was so irritating.

some fine choices - Wasted and Satisfaction are good cuts. I'll have to defend the FYC cover though, its not the WORST cover ever, surely?
Have you heard Cat Power's version of Satisfaction? It hits you halfway through, and you go "aah, right!"

If you can get a hold of Ween's live versions of Sultans of Swing, Band on the Run, Enter Sandman, or a little aborted version of Piano Man, you're in for a treat. Gene can sing like anyone. And they can play that honkey-tonk like anything.

Didn't the writer of that song claim he'd never heard Obladi Oblada (or however you spell it)? I don't know about anyone else, but I think I'd have more respect for a musician who admits to having ripped off the Beatles than to one who'd never listened to the Beatles.

Celine Dion has a way of stripping any amount of soul and gumption from even the greatest of songs. For my money, nothing tops the butchering and stripping of any emotion she did to "River Deep Mountain High", the Ike and Tina classic (that actually was the beginning of the end of Ike and Tina since the song was Tina only and proved she was the reason anybody bothered with them!)
