Vanilla Ice actually claimed he'd never heard "Under Pressure" by Bowie/Queen and that he came up with that hook himself. |

While many probably count this as one of the worst covers ever I really really like Jim Carey's cover of "I am the Walrus." It rocks so hard. Does anyone know where this song came from? I got it off napster a long time agao and it's been a mystery to me ever since.

I think it comes off George Martin's Beatles tribute album, 'In My Life'. I thought of a couple more: Kissing Cousins by the Saints, Enter Sandman by Pat Boone. Ooh, and anything by Richard Cheese. Sheer Genius.

In light of recent events, I'm gonna say Bad Astronaut's version of 'Needle In The Hay' is an excellent tribute.

Jeff Buckley's "Hallelujah" is up there in my best covers list.
Also worth hearing The Cardigans fluffy-pop cover of Sabbath Bloody Sabbath!

Damn, yeah, every cover Buckley did (except maybe Kick Out The Jams). Hallelujah still sends tingles up and down on the millionth listening, as does Lilac Wine. Also Jonny Cash: I mentioned I Won't Back Down, I think, but also One and Hurt, the newest single are awesome.

Jeff Buckley's "Hallelujah is fan-freaking-tastic. I played it for my mother and she laughed at it. Dumb bastard.

The Rufus Wainwright version off Shrek is pretty good (gay powers!), but not a patch on Buckley. Both are better than the original.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Uncle Tupelo's cover of The Stooges "I Wanna Be Your Dog," one of the most kickass covers which improves greatly on what is already a decent song. Frank's "Hang On To Your Ego" is killer. The chorus is huge! "hang on but i KNOW! that you're" ... the "KNOW!" is the hook. "Head On" was pretty awesome too. The original was slow, and 4 minutes long, and repeated a lot more, whereas The Pixies version speeds along, adds a bit more of a hook to the melody; "I come around catchin' SPARKS OFF YOU!" is so much more lively than the monotone Jesus and Mary Chain version. And The Pixies version just rocks as long as it can until there's no more room to rock the song, and then stops, before getting worn out. Don't get me wrong, I like the Jesus and Mary Chain version alright, but The Pixies have the superior version. I like plenty of covers that The Beatles did in their early days, particularly "Baby It's You" and "Mr. Moonlight." this comes from allmusic.com: "It doesn't help that Lennon's cover of his beloved obscurity "Mr. Moonlight" winds up as arguably the worst thing the group ever recorded" I'm gonna regulate on that two-bit critic!
Weezer has fun with the song "My Adeline" or whatever the fuck it's called. That's a good cover. Sense Field did a good rendition of "Caribou".
I'm not fond of the Cardigans, and their cover of "Iron Man" is pretty stupid. It's frustrating, cuz they're trying to make it sound all whimsical and tropical, and it had potential, but they don't really improve on the melody so it just sounds like a kinda dead version of a song I've already heard enough of in my life.
Eve 6 version of "Alison" really sucks.
I'm not big on those ironic punk covers that Me First & The Gimme Gimmes and A New Found Order do. However, I love Dynamite Hack's folk version of "Boyz N The Hood."
There's plenty more that I like and dislike, but I'll leave it at that for now. |

Me First etc are funny for about five minutes, but the joke wears off... Weezer's version of Velouria is really good, very appropriate for them somehow, as is their cover of Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want. Oh yeah, Dead Kennedy's Viva Las Vegas as well.

I don't think anyone paid attention when I mentioned this before..... Did anyone hear APC's cover of Ashes to Ashes? I can't find it but I know it exists. they also did some wacko cover of Diary of a Madman mixed with Lovesong called Diary of a Lovesong, no good though. |

Don't know if it has been mentioned, but I'd like to say that Orgy's cover of "Blue Monday" is completely awful.
Also, Sixpence None the Richer's version of "There She Goes"
...and, although I hate to admit it, Shudder to Think did a terrible, terrible version of "Crosstown Traffic"
-
I've always thought that Jawbox did an excellent version of "Something Must Break" (Joy Division)

I thought John Cale did a really good job of it on the "I Shot Andy Warhol" sndtrk.
As for Cohen, I've only heard the version on the second Greatest Hits disc (More Greatest Hits?)

CHECK OUT Nina Simone's version of "To Love Somebody"
The best cover of the best song ever.
Great Covers: 1. Any time Joe Cocker covers the Beatles. 2. Don't Let me Down covered by Paul Weller 3. Any time Eric Burdon covered anything. It was either most ass kicking or so over the top crazy it defaulted into asskickingdom. |

I like Sonic Youth's version of I Wanna be your Dog. I know that Kim Gordan's voice can be irritating, but i think it works.
All the covers done by Jeff Buckley were amazing.
Johnny Cash covering My Own Personal Jesus is also a very good cover. |

To reinforce the mention of UT's "I wanna be your dog" cover, the version on the anthology kicks ass.

the Raincoat's version of "Lola" by The Kinks.
Camber Van Beethoven doing Black Flag's "Wasted" (and "Pictures of Matchstick Men" by Status Quo)
Butthole Sufers' "The Hurdy Gurdy Man"
Dinosaur Jr's "Just Like Heaven" (hey, it's still good)
Elf Power does a bitchin cover of a Bad Brains song, but i can't remember which one (i saw them live a while back)
i think among all of Frank's equally excellent covers, i like "Do Nothing" the best. good shit.

Orgasmic?
I am guilty of liking Jolene too.
Granddaddy's Revolution is how I got into them
Tricky's Black Steel (public enemy) is a great one
I don't like any Pixies covers I've heard except 1 or 2, surley this will change with TRIBUTE CD, REPENT! as I shall begin to like new covers. The only cover that stuck with me at all from "where is my mind, a pixies tribute" was Alec Eiffle by that one band I never listen to and probably don't like their other stuff.

I love Jolene by the white stripes and death letter as well. Winterlong has an amazing harmony between Kim and FB.
Bad Covers:
Garth Brooks - Hard Luck Woman (Kiss) Britney Spears - Satisfaction (stones)
