Okay, so I bought the Cure's Greatest Hits over a year ago around the time I was first into the Pixies because I was very obsessed with 80s rock at the time (that wasn't corporate 80s hair band rock, of course). I've always liked Lullaby and Just Like Heaven and The 13th (which wasn't on the Greatest Hits, dammit!), but I remember finding that The Cure sounded pretty generic and campy when I listened to the songs. And every time I've gone back to give the disc another spin, it just hasn't struck me as anything outstanding. Until now. I'm listening to it at the moment and all of it's sounding good. "Close To Me" is an awesome dinky little song, and The Lovecats is kickin'! It's all fantastic. Why didn't this music strike me as amazing until just now!?!

Get the albums as the albums songs are much much better than the singles.

Get Disintegration, it works so much better as an entire LP than as a couple of singles (although the singles are good). The thing with the albums is that the songs are twice the length usually, so you get to hear Pictures Of You for even longer, for instance.
Also you should check out the Dinosaur Jr version of Just Like Heaven "the only listenable Cure song" in the words of J Mascis.

I love 'Friday I'm in love' although it's a stupid song
I'm a cure newbie, don't own their albums. But one day I will.....mwahahaha
I think I like the oldest albums the best, 'a forest' was a huge hit in holland (before I was born) and it gets lot's of airplay as a oldie-goldie. I adore their sound on that track.

Seventeen Seconds is probably the best but all of the albums up until Wild mood Swings are great, WMS and Bloodflowers are mediocre.

Just about to buy a new hifi and in readiness I am buying up cds to replace my old records. Having a bit of a retrofest with Siouxsie & the Banshees, Echo & the Bunnymen, The Cure, The Stranglers, Play Dead, Magazine on my list.

Magazine by the way are one of the most under rated bands of the last 25 years in my humble opinion. Secondhand Daylight is an incredible album. I would place Howard Devoto in Frank Black territory for individuality and song writing capability.

The Cure were really great up until Wish. After that, they suddenly started making albums where I found multiple songs I didn't like (previously it would be 1 or maybe 2 songs per album, if that). I didn't even bother with Bloodflowers after listening to some samples.

All of the previous albums are *very* worthwhile indeed. The old B-sides are fantastic too (Another Journey By Train, Stop Dead, New Day, etc). The real Holy Trinity of Cure albums, though, must be Faith, Pornography and Disintegration. I really love the detached feel of 17 Seconds too... screw it, buy 'em all... oh, and The Cure in Orange video/DVD. Dammit, I must go check out The Cure again!

Did anyone else see/hear the sadness recently that is The Cure's "Pictures of You" in a new HP commercial?

I was a devoted, over the top fan in grade/high school, then a little into college. I agree with many here that Pornography, Faith, B-Sides (Staring at the Sea), are all great. Love 17 seconds, somebody stole my first copy, glad they liked it so much ;). Also wonderful is Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me - the first time I got Cure on vinyl. I stopped buying their albums after Disintegration, which was very good, but foreshadowed their demise in my book. I'd start at the beginning if you already have a song you've fallen in love with. Three Imaginary Boys is a masterpeice, IMHO.

How could I forget Head on the Door? Some of their very best songs! (In Between Days, Six Different Ways, Night Like This, Push!!).

The only Cure song I've ever heard that I like is the one from the original soundtrack to the movie "The Crow." It was called something like "Everynight I Burn" or something. Maybe that's not the title, but it's the main chorus. Anyone know which one I'm talking about?

"Burn"

You can find an excellent Cure discography at http://www.plainsong.net

The first Cure album I bought was Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me. I'm not certain if I'd recommend it as a great starting point.

'Three Imaginary Boys' would make fr a nice introduction, I think.

Faith, yeah how could I forget that album, a true classic. All of their early stuff is great.... even The Top (which is regarded as their first shite album). I agree also that after Wish their albums became boring, thats not to say WMS and Bloodflowers don't have some great songs, just not as consistent as the rest of them.

The Greatest Hits album is not bad though, I only bought it for the bonus cd of the greatest hits done acoustic which is very good.

I've heard the Dinosaur Jr. version of "Just Like Heaven," and I really dig it, but I only have it on the Ear Bleeding Country collection of Dino songs, and it seems as though "Just Like Heaven" is cut short on that, even though it's the factory pressing of this CD that I have. Perhaps there was an error that never was corrected, or perhaps this is simply how the song ends. But it gets cut off right when they go into the second "you" part.

Perhaps you should ask J. Mascis, as he posts on the board sometimes. Although he's been strangely absent as of late.

Yeah, great song. The Cure surely are one of the best British bands of the late 70's, 80's and early 90's. In this period Robert Smith barely puts a foot wrong, so my advice would be to buy an album from this period (although it is better to go from chronological order). I'd advise getting Pornography, The Top and Kiss me once you have become more familiar with their sound as although these are great albums, are not so ear friendly. In fact The Cure are very similar to Frank Black in that on first listen you the songs don't really have much of an effect, but after a handful of listens you become addicted.

The Cure are a great band and Robert Smith lipstick technique is spot on.

Robert Smith refused to let one of the cure's songs be covered on Stars in your eyes, i can't remember which song it was but it was a smart move.

About a year ago i read somewhere that Brandy had married Robert Smith, as it turned out it wasn't THE robert Smith but i couldn't help wishing it was, they would make such a lovely couple.
I could just imagine the headlines on the National Enquirer.

Anybody see the old Saturday Night Live home-renovating skit with Robert Smith? They had gone through his "house" with a wrecking ball and fake cobwebs and dirt and such. After the renovation he did a walk-through and was very pleased, "ooh that's great", and "Oh I just love it!". That was hilarious.

I always respected the fact that they never took themselves seriously, contrary to what a lot of people thought, and would always get piss-faced drunk before any video shoot, and tried to do the silliest videos possible, just having fun. The "Alone With You" video (in the cave, with all the sour faces, and over-the-top symbolism with the cave = female genitalia, stalagmite and stalagtites = male genitalia) was a total joke, cue: Robert's tennis shoes.

Also the "Close to You" song was a bit of a lark, when their music started to get big and they wanted to throw in a monkey wrench to keep from getting pigeon-holed. So they did a disco/dance club song, and it became one of their biggest hits - a total backfire!

Didn't Barbara Streisand take the writers of South Park to court after that episode, I vaguely remember reading something about it somewhere, but I might be mistaken?

Despite the last two albums being patchy, I reckon that The Cure have still got a cracker left in them, although I have heard that they have asked Sophie Ellis Bextor to sing on their nxt record, which to me isn't a very good move.

the cure has always been one of my favourite groups but i stoped listening to their new stuff after "disintegration",that is when they became plain pop.i prefer their darker records.if i had to do a top 5 list that would be it:
1-17 seconds.a masterpiece
2-3 immaginary boys.immature and still containing pure punk songs (like grinding halt)but a great debut + contains fire in cairo and accuracy
3-pornography.hanging garden\figurehead\strange day.it could be a classic just for these 3 songs
4-faith.difficult but beautiful, maybe the more underestimated of all their records
5-disintegration.with this they finally gain the commercial success they were looking for.nevertheless it remains a perfect album, faithfull to their quality standards but somehow easier for the masses and with catchy pop melodies too.

to avoid:wild moon swings.an effort to change style turned out a complete disaster, made millions of cure fanatics wonder if r.smith was arteriosclerotic or under mescalin when recorded that...that...i don't know what to call it.after this r.smith himself was considering a new career as a hairstylist.it just sucks.

the song is called "lovesong" and not "Alone With You".apart from that i agree that despite their dark reputation they were pretty funny guys.i've seen more than one interview (including mtv)given by robert smith completely drunk.

To be fair WMS has its good points, Strange Attraction, Want, Club America, 13th, Jupiter Crash.... but the rest is either mediocre or rubbish (Trap, Return, Treasure, Round and Round).

Bloodflowers was a big dissapointment, if you ask me it is weaker than WMS. The good songs are Out of this World, Watching Me Fall, Maybe Someday (if you can get past the cheese), 39.... but the rest are just fillers and are pretty boring to listen to. Both albums got good reviews though.

FYI Sophie Ellis Bextor is a cheesy pop singer who can be compared to the likes of Posh Spice, it's that kind of annoying commercial radio music.... stuff that kids buy. But who knows, every artist who has been around for a long time goes through periods where they produce patchy albums (Bowie, Young etc etc), I think the Cure still have it in them to write another great album like their earlier days..... they just need to release albums more freqently than every 4-5 years.
