There seem to be quite a few of us who piddle away our time here on the boards while at work; I'm one of them. I shouldn't really say I'm bored as I've had more GD phone calls in 10 mins than in all of last year but I'm still managing to refresh these pages every so often.
If you're at work and can't find a thing to do, why not tell us about it here? What do you do? Why do you hate it? It might help.

This has been such an unreal day and it's only 11:30. I can't even describe how hectic it's been around here, people are running around all willy nilly and it just won't end. First there are alarms sounding left and right then there was a car crash then I get a call from a panicked mother saying that her daughter has been threatening suicide and now she can't get in contact with her.
About a half hour after that I get a call from this guy saying that his nephew, who had stayed over his house last night, apparently stole his car as it wasn't at his house the following morning. This relates to my school because his nephew is the boyfriend of the girl who was threatening suicide. This uncle believes the nephew took his car to visit the suicidal girlfriend and goes on to tell me how much this car means to him because it belonged to his now deceased mother. There is also $300 of christmas gifts in the trunk of the car yadda yadda this day is way too busy; I'm just a simple College Public Safety Dispatcher.

I suppose this can't really be considered boring, but I anticipated it being another boring day when I started this thread.

no my friend... though i wouldn't call this working... I work in a music store... thats on the side of a road that no one drives down, so we have about 6 customers in an 8 hour shift, and they're rude pricks too... I have to believe that they are ALL deaf because as they walk in the door, i have to greet them being the slave that i am, and they never seem to hear me... i always contemplate throwing a Cd at their nicely styled heads and then we'll be in business. I also have to buy their stupid shit too, so needless to say they always bring in cd's that they never should have bought in the first place but were to hoped up backstreet pills that their otherwise useless judgement was clouded to the evils of pop music.....erggg... i have no patience... maybe im in the wrong field, but hey...beggars can't be choosers... the only benefit to working here is getting to listen to whatever the hell i want and gettin first dibs at the crap people try to sell, which, once in a while is actually something tolerable. mumble.....mumble.....mumble....

I'm still a under 20,000 a year lackey at a restaurant. Not only is it not the best money, it's boring as shit, too. Tons of people work in restaurants, so there's not really that many interesting stories about it I can tell. |

Not really, no, and no.
Yeah, I guess "interesting" might be an appropriate word, although maybe not "good interesting." We have all sorts come through that place, and our turnover is so high that no one ever stays for long. I meet someone who I think is cool, shares the same interests as me, etc., they stay for a month or so, and then *poof* they disappear off the face of the planet! |

at first I read turnovers as the pastry and thought you were making a Bushesque comment, "We need to make the pie higher."

I hear you on the turnover. Restaurants are the worst for that. Sometimes they just disappear without any warning, of course leaving everybody scrambling to cover their section and stuff too. But anyway, it sucks 'cause you start to enjoy working with someone and then they're gone like that.

Just since I made that post last night we've had someone quit after having worked there for about a year and a half. |

Well, the job sucks, but it is a typical restaurant job, no better or worse than any of the others. People just come along from jobs where they were topping out at making 6 or 7 dollars an hour, and the prospect of making 8 starting out appeals to them. But, we are a busy store, about $50,000 a week, and it gets hectic. No one seems to want to get past that "newby" phase where you don't know exactly what to do, and the business seems overwhelming. That's my best guess why people leave. Plus, it is very policy-oriented now, especially because at O'Charley's in Knoxville there was a case of hepatitis. So ever since then Ruby's has been instituting all these new safety policies, which is well and good, but some people find the rules too strict, I guess. Other than that, I don't know. If these people who breeze through in a week can't hack it at a restaurant job, then they are going to definitely have major problems in the job market later. |

i worked in many restaurants.. mainly an Italian restaurant during high school, and even jr. high..
restaurants do suck. unless you're waiting tables at a nice restaurant, making great tips, working in restaurants is ass. it's a lot of hard work and pressure for very little .. seriously, if you work in a busy restaurant it can be very stressful and chaotic.. AND, the hours usually suck. working weekend nights, putting a nice dent in your social life... and, of course, worst of all is the customers (the ahole ones, which there are always some)..
i think there's a big turnover because of this, and, also, generally, people working in restaurants are just "doing it for the time being".. like for a summer job or whatever.. not a career.. plus, most of them are younger.. hence, flakey.

I work in a restaurant for now and I can't email at work. I wish I could. Then I would be even more happy and fun.
