I'm listening to 'Mystery Spot' right now (on vinyl yes) It's pretty hard to listen to, but I love it. The vocals are cool, but very weak
I read in a dutch interview a few years a go that Frank was considering buying the catalog of Angst from STT records, so he could release them on cd, because STT won't. That would be great.
There are absolutely no Angst records over here so a re-release would be nice I was very lucky to get my hand on this Mystery Spot album.
Ok let's discuss the band Angst, Frank seems to love them. He did a cover of a Angst song in holland in 2001, on a spanish guitar, anyone a idea which song it is?

Do you know what would be a good album to get started on since I am a retard?
Which Angst should I get first? |

and to give an answer to your question:
I don't know, the only one I can find is 'Mystery Spot' and allmusic.com says it's their weakest (that would mean that the others are great). I read that 'lite life' was their best

I have most of their records (all on vinyl) and saw them play several times. The first EP (on Happy Squid Records) was great. It's the one with "Neil Armstrong" and "Die Fighting." Definitely find that if you can, but I don't know if it ever came out on CD. Lite Life is also very good-- it was on SST Records so it's probably still available.

Kind of off topic here but I figured I'd just do this instead of starting another thread. What's everyones favorite Dischord band? Other than Fugazi, because I'm sure that if I didn't say that everyone would just pick Fugazi. I love Rites of Spring what does everyone else think of them?

Government Issue used to be one of my faves, but they weren't really a "Dischord band". Their best records came years after that. I'd have to go with Minor Threat. The Faith/Void album was pretty fantastic. Scream, Marginal Man. All that early stuff was ace IMHO, but then I'm an old guy.

My favorite isn't really a 'Dischord band' either -> Shudder to Think
Past them, I'd go with Jawbox and Circus Lupus.

They probably smoked too much weed while they designed it.
--edit-- Maybe you'll have to find it on ebay or a used record shop. |

Angst has been out of print for a long, long, long time. The albums Lite Life, Mending Wall, and Mystery Spot are all available on vinyl and cassette. I've got Cry for Happy on CD, and it's by far their weakest album. I've never heard their first EP, which someone mentioned was released on Happy Squid in, hrm, 1985, I think? There's only one Angst track still in print - "Worker Bee" available on Alternative Tentacles' "Not All's Quiet On the Western Front" - which showcased a rather large amount of mediocre bands from the Northern Californian region, barring a few noticable standouts (Angst included). This track is available at eMusic.com. There's the also out of print record, "Blasting Concept Vol. II", which was an album full of SST outtakes, including Angst's excellent "Just Me".
If you want a good introduction to their stuff, get Mending Wall (this has "Some Things (I Can't Get Used To))" and Lite Life (this has the equally as excellent, "Love Dissolves", and if you dig that, you'll probably like Mystery Spot ("Back In January" is the best love letter to the Clash that I've ever heard), and you might like Cry For Happy (this one's merely okay; has "My Dinner With Debbie" and uh, well, it's kind of forgettable other than that and a few songs - "Outside My Window" is pretty solid).

Addendum here: the name of the song that Frank played was "Some Things (I Can't Get Used To)". When Frank was sort of hanging around the message board, I am asked him about his love for Angst, and he said that he did indeed know Jon E. Risk and Joseph Pope (they're brothers, actually), and that he actually recorded a version of "Some Things" during the Devil's Workshop sessions, but he's still deciding if it's good or not. Hey Frank - this sounds like the kind of thing that you might just wanna hand out to fans, y'know? Or not.

Now that I'm home, I'm looking at the record. Christ I haven't listened to this in ages. It's just titled "Angst"-- Happy Squid Records HS011 from 1983. I think it may have been reissued later on SST. This is a great record. I dig their first two LPs but this one's my pet fave. Produced by John Talley-Jones (of The Urinals, natch), which figures since Happy Squid was his label.

Yeah, that EP was re-released by SST in '86 or '87, I think.

Outside my Window is on Mystery Spot, James... was it re-recorded for Cry for Happy?

No, no. Sorry, that was my bad. Just chalk one up for a better song on Mystery Spot that's not on Cry for Happy.
