I saw it. I was actually just about to post this to see what people thought. I'm sure I'm going to hell for liking such senseless violence but GD was it stylish senseless violence. KB was an amazing tribute to martial arts films. I can't wait for the second vol. What a great soundtrack too; I love that bang bang song in the beginning. And how about that opening caption? Made me proud to be a geek.

Umm, I'm sorry but I LOVE the Coen's and I'm sure I might enjoy it but right now it doesn't look like I'd touch that movie with a pair of 10 foot eyeglasses.
I have no desire to see a "40's style Divorce comedy" when movies like KILL BILL and SCHOOL OF ROCK are in the theaters. |

Hey Swimmer, wasn't Kill Bill filmed in Beijing?? I know that Tarantino was over here about 6 months ago for reasons concerning the film.... gonna have to look out for this on DVD as it will be available.

i agree.. it was a fun movie.. but i'm not sure how it measures up to the rest of his films. i can't help but wonder how i would think of this film pre-Matrix.. i respect the fact that, for the most part, all of the stunts and choreography were real.. ie. not a lot of wire-removal stuff like Matrix.. but i can't help but think that, for sheer "best fight scene" value, MATRIX: RELOADED takes the cake for this year.
nonetheless, one of the best films i've seen this year. gotta hand it to Tarantino (who i'm a big fan of by the way) for doing something like this.. i think it's smart of him not to try anything too serious after being out of the scene for a while. what can the critics really say about this? it's a samouri film, set in modern day, with a femal lead.. it's fucking crazy. how often do you see films like this?
not often.
word up.
long live the movies.. |

Yeah.
I think The Matrix is , you know, too much up it's own ass. This movie is like a geek dream I thought. It's so very Quentin Tarantino and I can't really rate it against his other movies, not yet I think till I see the whole thing.
Pulp Fiction is a Masterpiece of dialouge and story. This Kill Bill movie has me really wrapped up in the story already as well though too.
The dialouge is minimum in this one but it doesn't matter because that's what the story calls for.

I understand what you are saying. But unfortunately this is China, not the west, which means that the film will come out over here in about 2 months and be dubbed in Chinese. It will then come out in a cinema over here that will play in English in about 6 months. So I have no choice really. I'll probably hold out for a few weeks and then buy a copy as then it will be DVD quality. Buying a copy now (and it is guaranteed there will be alot about) will probably be bad quality so I'll hold on for a few weeks.

I loved the beginning of the scene with the Lucy Lui battle, just the set and the snowflakes falling softly on everything, stunningly beautiful.

Kill Bill was GOD DAMN AWESOME. I saw it this past Sunday with my girlfriend, and BOY did that movie blow me away.
It's a very tall statement, but I think I consider it a better movie than Pulp Fiction. Even so, the two are quite different so maybe that isn't a fair assertion.
Kill Bill Vol. 1 is one of the best movies i've seen in a long long time. the fight scene between the Bride and Go-go is fuckin' KICKASS. Actually, the whole final fight scene in Lucy Liu's character's dojo/club-type place is mind-blowingly badass. Better than anything i've seen in the Matrix, hands down!
and the 10-or-so minute segment that explains the history & childhood of Liu's character, which switches over to complete anime, was an extremely unique and amazing touch. I love the way the movie skipped around in time, but in such a skillful way that it was completely coherent and effective. Tarantino is a demigod for creating something as awesome as this.

It's hard to be negative about a movie with so much style that it drips off the screen. I really enjoyed all the cinematography, both subtle and blatant. As someone else here said, the fight scene in the snow was just beautiful. And an absolutely fantastic soundtrack to go along with the film. As Mike said after the movie, it's basically a live action japanese cartoon.
Unfortunately, I really felt the movie was all style and no substance. Part one or not, it needed to stand on its own, and it didn't. Perhaps as a small part of some overarcing story, but in the end, what did we see? I really can't go into a detailed exposition of the plot without ruining what little story there is, but it was severely lacking. And is there a moral or lesson to be learned? Again, we're left with not yet. It's great to make a movie that's part of a whole, but I don't think that excuses putting off development of a plot or reason for the movie's existence.
As pure entertainment, yeah, lots of action, all cut very well. Woo would be proud. The gore was over the top in a ridiculous sort of way, which was obviously intended to stylistically match it's cartoon/comic forebearers and make light of the fact that such carnage is taking place, but I found it genuinely gross. Even the animated exposition of O-ren had my skin crawling. Perhaps I'm not as desensitized as I thought. It felt strange to be so repulsed, especially when it's so blatantly over-the-top.
Jason, I did notice the ad for Red Apple. Didn't make the connection to Pulp Fiction, though.
Anyway, there's my opinion. Someone had to weigh in on the not liking it side, even though it's hard to do when it's so beautiful stylistically.

i'd be hardpressed to say that KILL BILL is better than PULP FICTION. i don't think Tarantino will ever be able to outdo PULP, but that's just me..
KILL BILL is visually stimulating, well-written, and unlike anything else that's come out in a long time (i mean, it's a fucking samouri film set in modern day, with a female lead).. but as far as measuring up against his other films, i don't know where it ranks..
i consider KILL BILL more of an experiment .. something he wanted to do to exercise his filmmaking muscles before he moves on to something more weighty..
the main thing that was missing for me was the humor..
not that it wasn't funny.. there are plenty of hilarious moments. but in his other films the violence is usually twisted in a certain way... where it's uncomfortable and distrubing, but hilarious at the same time. here, like cult of frank said, it's just uncomfortable (most of the time).. there were long stretches, at the screening i went to, where the audience was dead silent..
i just can't help but think that he should have done this film 5 years ago. if he followed JACKIE BROWN with this (all pre-Matrix of course), it would have been fucking insane..
anyway..

Haven't seen it, but i'm finding it harder and harder to extract anything redeeming in violence.
Sure, it's 'entertainment', but when glorifying some of the worst aspects of humanity is considered 'entertaining'..truly sad this is what they choose to focus on.
Like really, what happened to this poor guy, that this is what he wants to devote so much of this time to, and encourage others to watch? |

I agree with you Dave although I still have to admit I enjoyed it. It was intensely gross and uncomfortable and the humor was slightly missing and I'm not excusing the man's lack of morals but I dug it for its style and brilliant tribute to samurai and anime films.
He's making a war movie next and I'm a bit worried about that. Glorifying war is something I'm totally against. Saving Private Ryan was disgusting, I don't care if it did portray things as they happened. Why then am I less offended by Kill Bill's monstrously gore packed film? I spose because it's completely and obviously fiction. The parts that most disturbed me were the few scenes when innocent people died but those were supposed to outrage us. I can forgive the rest of the killing because they were all evil.
As a side note, have any of you got the soundtrack. There's a killer cover of Don't Let Me be Misunderstood. I don't think the lyrics are in the film, just the music, so I didn't recognize it. I'm in love with this 10 min masterpiece now.

Also, did anyone notice the camera work in the restaurant? ...how it floated over ceilings and moved through the crowd...I think JT was trying to out do Scorcese's Goodfellas restaurant scene, but I didn't take note if JT's was one cut or not...nice. |

i noticed it..
it wasn't until about half way through that i was like, "fuck, he hasn't cut yet".. i think it's all one continuous shot that starts and ends at the same place, with her hiding in the box thing.
i think with any shot like this, there's an element of homage to the other films that have done it. even before GOODFELLAS there were other films that had looooong ass tracking shots. the first, most notable one was TOUCH OF EVIL.. the opening credit sequence is all this one shot that tracks along the city and ends up on the exploding car. (the film was shot in Venice, CA by the way ... just for trivia sake ... though it's set in Mexico)..
Hitchcock tried to out do Wells after that with the opening shot of PSYCHO - the helicopter establishing shot of Phoenix that flies in and right into the window where the movie begins..
pretty cool shit, but they actually cut and made it look like no cut..
there are tons of others...
one of the most impressive recently, though the movie wasn't that great, is DePalma's SNAKE EYES.. the whole beginning of that film, for about 25 minutes (they made a sepcial film magazine to pull it off) is one continuous steadicam shot, that weaves in and out of fucking everywhere.. also, there are several shots in BOOGIE NIGHTS that are worth renting the DVD and taking a second look at. some amazing stuff (including the steadicam shot that follows a woman through a party, and then goes underwater with her in the pool)..

Did anyone catch the homage to Pulp Fiction? Uma says "that will make us square" and draws a square with her finger, much like her scene in PF when she tells Vincent not to be a (draws square with fingers). I loved that. Also, I thought the whole sword battle scene in the Japanse restaurant (with the 5,6,7,8's playing) was very similar (perhaps an homage as well) to the scene in Crouching Tiger where she takes on all those guys in the restaurant. Kill Bill was indeed a skillful, beautiful movie, with a great soundtrack, great editing, and a storyline that will hopefully grow in the next installment. From what I've read, it was originally all one movie, and QT was "ecouraged" to make it into two. Perhaps the whole thing tells a better story than the first half does. But wow, this is pure style, and a filmmaker at the top of his game. Oh, and the outfit that Uma wears to battle the 88's is the same thing Bruce Lee wore in his last film. I'm sure there are many more references in this movie. Like the tune Daryl Hannah is whistling...

Yeah, I noticed the Square thing.
I still like the movie. It seems to be like everything and nothing I have ever seen before all at the same time.
I hope the DVD is the whole movie, no cuts. I really am looking forward to the second volume.
It's like a great comic book of a movie.

I had wondered why, at times, the film would go into Black & White. My first thought was that he was trying to lessen the gore perhaps to get an R rating then I thought, "No way. If it was going to get an NC-17 rating it would have been given it long before this scene." Someone suggested it had to do with Uma's state of mind during those fight scenes but just recently someone told me it did in fact go into Black & white in order to get an R rating. Does this make any sense to anyone? Why would Tarantino even care if he got an NC-17 rating? I would think he'd be proud of it.
I wonder if the DVD will be the whole movie. I think it was smart of them to break it up. Another hour and a half of that would have got a bit tedious but as it stands I'm wanting to go back later to see the second half. A whole movie would have just been too much and it would have lost its effect.

I heard it had to do with the rating as well. NC-17 is the death knell for films. No director wants that. It cuts the gross of your movie WAY down.
I read an article where some woman was complainin about Uma's feet. Did I miss something? What was wrong with her damn feet.
Albeit, feet to me are never that attracive to begin with. I see them more as a necessity rather than some part to be in awe of. I save that for the boobies.
So what was so bad that this woman was just in utter disgust? |

I noticed the square thing too. I heard a couple of knowing snickers (mine included) when that happened. Plus, I subconsciously noticed the yellow jumpsuit-looking thing that Uma was wearing, but didn't consciously make the connection to Bruce Lee until I read speedy's post. The movie would have definitely been too long if it was both Vol. 1 and Vol. 2. The pace of this film is pretty frantic, leaving very little space for breathers (the biggest one i remember being the Sonny Chiba - Uma scene where she implores him to craft a blade for her)...I think three hours would have been a little bit of a sensory overload. I love the way Tarantino pays tribute to past films while at the same time creating something strikingly fresh and brilliant.

Swimmer, I thought she had horrific feet, the likes of which are exceeded only by my sister and Mr. Deeds. I've seen some very sexy feet in my day, but I may never look at feet the same way again after that. Well, not really, but... they should have got a foot double. You can't ruin feet by masturbating unless you're really flexible.
On a serious note, I don't understand how a move to black and white would drop an NC-17 to R for a scene. I imagine it was stylistic in nature.
