Never canned personally. Let go from a job that I really liked along with a whole section of people.
I think that's still hard. I don't think I have ever been in a position to be "fired" as in, JETSON ....YOU'RE FIRED before. Just the kind of jobs I have had. |

Well this is a bit different cuz it was with my dad but anyways I used to work in his office and then last year he gave my mom the boot. One day I walked in and he had a note to self saying to cancel credit cards/change locks/close bank accts etc right on his desk. So when he went to go do it I called my mom and told her to run and drain the bank acct before he did which she did, it was like mission impossible or something. Let me tell ya he went bat-shit crazy when he got back. I quit before I got fired though. |

A guy was caught smoking dope at an old job and was fired on the spot. Not really much of a story, but he was pleading about how he didn't know that was bad and that he needed a job and stuff.

Whoa!
Now that seems like a juicy story.
So what's the deal. Did you have problems with Dad or was it the other way around or what?
And though yes, it sounds juicy, it's totally up to you how much you want to divulge! |

I guess it depends where you work. My husband's a bricklayer and the majority of those guys smoke it all day long. I've seen a guy get into a fender bender in the work truck and get out to talk to the other guy with his j still lit. |

Why do I get the feeling you actually mean a bread product. As in. an actual muffin and not just slang for your partner. |

i got fired from two jobs, right aroud the same time. it was kind of a low-point in my life. after college.. i was in sort of a transitional phase.. so i didn't really give a shit about the jobs admittedly..
i was working at a coffee shop, and a video store.
the coffee shop i got fired for being caught eating.
the video store i got fired for not going in for my shift (woops!)..

I walked out on three jobs in the middle of the day. One of them I had got in the middle of the summer (because I walked out on another in the middle of the summer and still needed money) so I told my employer that I wasn't returning to school. One day near the end of the summer there was a sewage problem in the back room and there was this awful smell but I was working the register up front and didn't notice it. My boss said, "just goes to show how oblivious you can be." I flipped and told him if he had payed any attention to my tax forms he would have seen that I claimed exempt which means I was going back to school and that showed how oblivious he could be. Then I left.
This summer I was Assistant Manager at an American Greetings. They loved me, said I'd be the best thing to ever happen to the store and that I would get my own store soon. Then one day I'm given this assignment that requires me to work in the backroom for the whole night, I won't get into the job but it was intense and time consuming. Apparently that day I encountered a secret shopper but didn't give her much attention because the girl I was working with was supposed to be seeing after the customers that day as I was extremely busy. Well I get a 30 of 100 on that secret shopper report and they fire me, while I'm at school mind you, and don't ever give the circumstances any thought. All of my co-workers know it's bullshit; my boss used me as a scapegoat for not doing her job. That was the only problem they ever had with me and never once was I admonished for the way I treated customers. I'm sure that it's highly illegal to fire someone based on one random customer not being entirely pleased with you but I can't be bothered to pursue it. fuck em.

No shit. I got your secret shopper right here. That sucks.
One person should not determine whether you get fired or not. |

Yeah, chain stores really just don't know how to operate. One bad secret shopper = fired? Their loss. If you're going to implement secret shoppers, it would seem to me that people might learn more by being corrected (not necessarily in your case) than being fired out right. Maybe the point was to intimidate/scare the other employees and bring down morale. Nobody wants to run a shop with happy employees.

I waddled, eight months pregnant, away from a horrible secretarial job (I had to take care of 28 people!!) w/a big nasty telecommunications corporation in the middle of the morning and never even went back to clean out my desk. I mailed them my key-card. I had been having a miserable time there anyway, and I finally just snapped that morning. I had to drag my big pregnant self in from the furthest parking lot in the horror that is an August Arkansas morning, and then a giant, fuzzy yellow M&M in the lobby fondled my belly. Don't ask me why it was there, because I don't know. Some weird promotional thing was going on and the lobby was crawling with mascots. I also narrowly missed being groped by Big Bird on my way out. God's honest truth.

Hell, pregnant women are used to being groped by all kinds of strangers, but Big Bird was just the last fucking straw.

Mere, that's hilarious/upsetting all at the same time. I may never eat another M&M. But I can't give up my Sesame Park. I just can't.

Once I had a tenure track job offer from a university (they told me on the phone I was being offered the job) and I did a second visit to the city to look for housing and for my wife to find a job. Then, after not hearing from my future employer for a month or so I found out through the academic grapevine that they had changed their mind. When I called them to find out what was happening they basically lied to me about their reasons and claimed that my second visit in fact had been a second interview which in their eyes I had failed. This left me in the lurch without a job and back in the market trying to find a very difficult to land tenure track job. So, I felt like I had been fired (it was a sickening feeling kind of like your favorite baseball team blowing a 3 run lead with 5 outs to go). I am still trying to dream up of ways to hurt the people that did that to me (any hackers out there). |
