Do you think Frank started covering this song coincidentally at the same time the LOTR movie came out (and video game)? Or was their intention behind it.

Did T. Waits write the song with any reference to J.R. Tolkien?

Just wondering. The xbox game made me wonder.

I guess I may be out of the loop, but what does LotR have to do with the song? Anyway, as far as Waits' impetus for writing the song, its from an opera he did about a pact with the devil in old Germany (kind of) and some magic bullets, so I doubt it is Tolkien related. It's a really good record though, and it's funny to hear William Burroughs (I think) trying to sing. If you ever get hear him singing "T'ain't No Sin," laugh with me at how he enunciates the B in "bones." It's like he's trying to POOF out a candle with the word.
