Anyone else planning on seeing this one? The cast includes Roberto Benigni, Tom Waits!, Steve Buscemi, Bill Murray, and last but not least Iggy Pop! Anyone else here a fan of Jarmusch? Wu-Tang Clan's Rza did the soundtrack for Jim again (last time on "Ghost Dog") What an incredible collaboration...

Damn that sounds awesome, I think I may have read about this movie somewhere else. Unfortunately I know I'll never get to see it around here, maybe when and if it's released on video or DVD. Speaking of which has anyone seen the MC5 documentary, I hope they put that on DVD sometime in the near future, I can't wait to see it.

Yeah that was really very good, surprising, like "Heathers" mixed with Twilight Zone and "Poltergeist" or something along those lines - I was really into it for the first few months after I saw it. Now I think I would need to watch it again to see if it holds merit for me as a perennial classic. I would definitely recommend a viewing if anyone hasn't seen it yet. If we ever decide to buy a DVD player, that will be among the first I purchase, as I am also interested in the extras.

anything by Jarmusch i'll be there on opening night. i thought GHOST DOG was one of the best films of its year.. wow, i can't believe it's been this long since he's made something..
i remember there was a short film COFFEE AND CIGARETTES a loooong time ago, that he made (didn't see it).. maybe this is an extension of that?
either way, Jim Jarmusch is one of my favorite young American directors.. (he's still pretty young) |

A Mighty Wind! Awwwww what a great movie. My hubby has had a headache for almost three months now (long story) and he and I were litteraly rolling and crying with laughter. It had been a long time since he had smiled so big. It is a great medicine. Those guys are comic geniuses.

Down By Law, Stranger Than Paradise, anyone? If you haven't seen either of these, I feel secure in positing that you will experience a joyful renaissance when you do.
Did anyone else get into the IFC show with John Lurie called "Fishing with John"? Man, that was a brilliant show! Laugh riot.

Jarmusch is a genius. He's got to be in his 40s by now. Hard to tell with all that gray hair, though. |

Ok, coupla things here:
Ghost Dog bit imo Mystery train was enjoyable and had a cool sountrack if I remember correctly.
*Donnie Darko SPOILER* Donnie Darko was highly reccommended to me by countless people. It was great for most of the film then bailed at the very end. Paradox ending have become a cop-out just like, "it was all a dream." I'm so GD sick of paradoxes.
Minority Report couldn't have even happened, paradox or not. If you pay close enough attention you'll realize it's impossible. Anyhoo, enough of my ranting. This new Jarmusch film does have an interesting lineup. Anyone here know of Tom DiCillo? Now there's a genius. |

Tom Dicillo is fucking awesome.....one of the most under-rated film-makers ever. Seen Box of Moonlight? Coincidently, he used to jam with Vincent Gallo and Jean-Michel Basquiat. Oh to be a fly on the wall... |

yeah I've seen Johnny Suede, Living in Oblivion, The Real Blonde and Box of Moonlight, the last was hard to find but I finally got them all. Haven't seen Double Whammy (2001)yet. Interestingly, Dicillo is the Cinematographer for Coffee & Cigarettes and apparently for the 1986 Coffee & Cigarettes by Jarmusch. Is this a remake? Also, wasn't that movie Dead Man with Johnny Depp a Jarmusch film?
FBlackFrancis, do you have a favorite Dicillo film? |

I don't watch many movies, but I know if Steve Buscemi's in it that means it'll be worth it! I've seen seven or eight movies that he's in and I liked every one of them. Wow, I feel like I should thank you for dropping his name.

Everyone and their dog and their fire hydrant has been telling me this is such a great movie for the longest time. Wouldn't you know it, one of my coworkers just lent it to me this very afternoon. I would have forgotten to watch it if not for you, so thanks...

i love Tom Dicillo, but pretty much only for LIVING IN OBLIVION. i think L.I.O. is one of the best films-about-film out there (a sub-genre i'm a big fan of).. up there with THE PLAYER and PURPLE ROSE OF CAIRO.. not quite as visually sophisticated. but a great film. BOX OF MOONLIGHT was just too directionless for me.. although i always love John Turturro.. Johnny Suede I could have done without. and THE REAL BLOND seemed like a sad attempt at a remake of LIVING IN OBLIVION. there were some hilarious moments, but that's about it.
Tom Dicillo used to be Jim Jarmusch's cinematographer.. his early shorts, PERMANANT VACATION and STRANGER THAN PARADISE. that's how he got his start.
interestingly enough, Jim Jarmusch got his start when Wim Wenders gave him some short ends from his film THE STATE OF THINGS. which Jarmusch used to shoot the first segment of STRANGER, and based on that, got some money to shoot the rest of it.
and if you want to trace film history back even further, Wim Wenders got his start working as a producion assistant under Samuel Fuller, another pioneering American independent filmmaker (anyone seen EXPERIMENT IN TERROR or THE NAKED KISS ?)..
quite a strain of talent coming down that pike.
you could almost make the argument that without Samuel Fuller, there would be no Tom Dicillo. although, no Wim Wenders and no Jim Jarmusch would be a far bigger loss.
anyway, i'm getting off track...

Naked Kiss- super creep-out factor. I haven't seen the others by Fuller, but I no longer have much access to good movies here in Columbus like I did in Chicago. I am at the mercy of the semi-decent Drexel and Wexner theaters, and the megolithic video crap factories, Ballbuster and Hollywank video...Anybody out there familiar with Columbus or know of any video rental places that might have a better selection? It's amazing that such a huge college town is so devoid of *anything* to do (besides a damn football game!).
floop - you're a veritable warehouse of film knowledge - I had no idea about how Jarmusch got his start with Wenders. Did you seriously study this stuff or is this film-lovin purely on-the-side? ;) I like LIO ok, but it's hard to get into the second/third time around. I love Buscemi, so it mods up a bit there. Trees Lounge went the same route - weirdly, calmly seductive, but in danger of being a dozer if not for him...Funny, I just rewatched Barton Fink last night. "Chet. My name's Chet!"
I'm hyped to see what Roberto Benigni does in this new flick - I had a really hard time with the last movie I saw of his (Life is Beautiful). Even with the subtitles, versus the awful overdubs, it still rubbed me the wrong way. I prolly need to give it another chance, though.
Yeah Dead Man was Jarmusch. What a super movie that is. The Neil Young sountrack gives me chills.

apl4eris, yeah, i studied film in undergrad.. and then went to film school after that. but i'm a fan before anything else..
as for shitty video stores. . you should really look into netflix (netflix.com).. i've heard nothing but good things about them. i'm lucky to have some excellent excellent video stores not far from me here in LA. but even so, i'm thinking about doing it too because it would be nice not to have to drive to return movies..
from what i hear, they have a pretty great selection (it's a great way to catch up on all those small foreign and independent releases you weren't able to see in the theatre).. |

I would have to say Box of Moonlight (probably his masterpiece)....one of his more heady films when it comes down to it; packed with symbolism and metaphors in every shot, but funny nonetheless...a lot of people I know didnt find it amusing at all. dunno why. Been a fan of Sam Rockwell ever since. I did get to see Double Whammy recently...its very good. |

Huh - I just realized I have seen Box of Moonlight - it came on IFC a while back, and I hadn't noticed the title, but I sure did enjoy that movie. Sam Rockwell's role as the Coyote-jokester made me want to drop everything and run for the hills. I love the aside of the scary old couple by Splatchee lake too.

Netflix is great, particularly if you're at the mercy of Blockbuster, Hastings, et al. If it's been released on DVD (and isn't porn), they've prolly got it.
I love Mystery Train, especially Screamin' Jay Hawkins as the desk clerk. "You got a curse on you!" I've seen all the early Jarmusch but not his newer stuff.
A Mighty Wind made me laugh harder than anything else I've seen in a long time. (I think that's also the last date we went on. Memo to self: must get out of house!) And who knew that Eugene Levy could sing?
floop, you always remind of the stuff I need to see again. I want to re-view Purple Rose of Cairo & especially Living In Oblivion b/c it just killed me the first time I saw it. It so perfectly nails all the various kinds of asshole people that you have to put up with in any sort of theatrical/film situation that you can plug the difficult folks you know right into it and laugh your ass off. I have more theatrical knowledge than film, but the types of plays that I tend to be drawn to are metatheatrical (plays about plays), and I'm definitely drawn to that in film too.
I have to wait 'til video for practically everything, but I'm going to try to see Lost in Translation before it gets away. The last DVD I watched was Secretary. Am I just a sicko, or did anyone else like that?

That does it. Me and my hubby are going to have to bite the bullet and buy a darn DVD player. I haven't seen Secretary, but I am interested. Guess I'm a little sicko...;)
Has anybody heard about the remaking of "Manchurian Candidate"? Kind of a weird coincidence for me, because I finally saw the original the other night, though I have been meaning to for years - wow! what a messed up movie, especially for its time. I couldn't believe the opening sequence.
I heard something about Denzel Washington being involved in the remake? Something about him staying at Lenny Kravitz's (gag!) place while he is filming it...

unrelated, but speaking of remakes: i'm kind of excited about Tim Burton's upcoming re-make of CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY.. but the other part of feels like he's treading on sacred ground. there's really no need to re-make that film. it completely stands up to time... |

I tried to watch Dead Man last night. Didn't like it at all, maybe it's just me. Iggy was entertaining for a few minutes though. Jack Black dresses almost exactly like Depp does in the movie... Coincidence?
