I just downloaded this song. Very cool original version, interesting to note that the very same sound effect (guitar feedback, whatever it is) from the start of the original was used at the start of The Pixies version (I'm fairly sure, I can't be bothered to get up and play Bossanova).
Anyway, this 60s surf music sounds pretty cool, My dad used to play it sometimes when I was little but I can't remember much of it. Anyone got some good surf bands to check out, either modern or old? Are there many innovative prog surf rock bands around today like Man or Astroman, or are they the only modern day surf band in existance?

If you change your balance to full left or full right you'll notice it's an old recording, instruments panned into left and right. I think it's drums and bass on the right, rhythm and lead on the left. Good to play along to if you want to play the lead or something. I have a reissue mustang and that has a nice surf sound if you get it right, nice bends in clean with the tremolo bar too.

Hey Sheamus, any chance you could send that song to me via AIM sometime later? I think i might have some surf music on my comp. Whether it's good or not, I don't remember but I can send what I have. |

Rhino has a five volume Rock Instrumental Classics series, volume five being "Surf". Volumes one & two are "the Fifties" & "the Sixties", respectively. All three are simply great, though short by modern standards at about 45 min each. I made a cdr compilation which has long been one of my fave car discs. |

The sound you hear at the beginning of both versions is the sound of someone hitting or kicking a guitar amplifier that utilizes a "spring reverb unit". These old-style reverb units are part of what helped define the booming, echoey tone of "surf guitar". They sound great, but unfortunately, when they're engaged, any strong bump or nudge of the amp will send the inner spring bouncing around and makes all kinds of freaky racket.
One of the best modern-day surf bands would most definitely be San Francisco's The Mermen, who use a lot of Sonic Youth-style feedback noise to stretch their instrumental pieces into epic psychedelic workouts.
Man or Astroman? got a lot of credit for the resurgence of interest in surf-rock, but to my ear, they're shallow poseurs who think much more about their costumes and stage props than the meat behind the songs. This opinion may be colored by the fact that I've dealt with them before, and except for Eric Hubner (whom I have much respect for), they acted like a bunch of spoiled assholes.
Great album art, though.

Those sound niice. Also, if you want to max-out on surf, Rhino also has a 4 CD Surf Box set that spans from the 50's to the 90's and has a good overview of surf history.

Surf music is definitely where it's at. If you enjoy it enough, check out some Mediterranean folk music; that's where a lot of the ideas come from. Blessings to whoever developed that Danelectro spring reverb box.
Anyone know of any regions with really strong surf scenes right now? I know around here there's one active surf band, and another that plays every six months or so, but I'm always wanting to see more live!

Wow, I did check out that Box set, and I do like it, but everywhere I go, it's going for $150-$300...it's Out Of Print...but it does look great...man. I'm buying disc 5 Erebus...good find.
Have you guys noticed that Surf singles are rehashed over and over again by the old bands? It's like an unwritten rule that they all must cover the same great songs over and over. I still love it though. |

Wow, lots of great replies, thanks everyone!
realmeanmotorscutor, I added you to AIM, when you're online I'll send you the file.
At the moment I'm downloading the best of Dick Dale, I'll probably go and look for some old surf CDs next time I'm out, there's bound to be a lot of cheap ones around the place.
I really like the way you described The Mermen Peter, I shall definately check them out. I got into Man or Astroman? originally because of the sci-fi cheesiness, I love that stuff, the surf rock asspect of their music has got me interested in checking out the genre on a much deeper level though. I think the latest Man or Astro-man album is brilliant, kind of insane experimental electro surf from a videogame of the future type music, a great progression from almost everything they've done in the past, which while I highly enjoy, did get a bit repeditive.

surf music can be good in the right atmosphere (ie: on the beach:lol) but otherwise i find it just slightly pleasant background music. doesn't have enough guitar mayhem to really excite me.

Man Or Astroman? are pretty fucking rockin' for contemporary "surf" music. they're mostly surf music, with a whole sci-fi thing thrown in there too.
they do a cover of Manta Ray too!
also, the Insect Surfers are pretty good, as far as new bands going Surf music. |

man or astroman spoiled asssholes? man that sucks. i'm a huge fan, but i've never met them before.
i think they're by far the greatest surf song writing talent today, with the exception of their new stuff, which i can't really get into. |

dear lord...have you ever listened to any Dick Dale?? he is undoubtedly the master of surf guitar mayhem.
I'm a big fan of surf rock...most good stuff seems to be the older surf rock (i.e. The Lively Ones, Dick Dale of course, Ventures)
Newer stuff that is also good: Man or Astroman?, Impala, Satan's Pilgrims check out bands on Estrus Records...there are a few good surf rock bands on there

Be sure to...good Dick Dale songs include Surf Taco, Misirlou (not the Pulp fiction version, but another one that is a little longer and has some female backing vocal "ahh's" in there--fucking SCORCHING version, and some other stuff)...his backing band is called the Deltones. btw, Dick Dale is referenced in 'The Man Who was Too Loud' when Frank sings "you know, i saw him open up for the King of the Surf Guitar"....that's Dick Dale's "title", so to speak. A little arrogant, but I guess you can have some arrogance when your guitar skills are uncanny like his.
Impala...don't know whatever happened to that band. Don't even know if they are still together. I have an album of theirs called "Square Jungle" which is quite good, all instrumental (like true Surf Rock should be.) if you can find an mp3 of theirs, check out "Lady In a Cage." That song exemplifies everything that is awesome about surf rock's energy, in my opinion.
Another good surf rock band (though I've only heard one song of theirs) are the Enchanted Tiki Tones. "Sneaky Tiki".....kickass song.
All these songs suggestions might be a good choice of stuff to look up on KaZaa/Soulseek/any other file-sharing shingdig of your choice.

Has anyone ever heard "A Guitar Named Desire" by Big Dipper? One of my favorite surf songs (although Big Dipper was most definitely not a surf band); great stuff.
